Siruvapuri Shri Balasubramaniaswamy Temple / Siruvapuri Sri Balasubrahmanyam temple, சிறுவாபுரி ஸ்ரீ பாலசுப்ரமணியசுவாமி கோவில், Siruvapuri, Chinnambedu, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Balasubramaniaswamy temple at Siruvapuri was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples visit – Part-2 on 07th May 2023. This place Siruvapuri is now called as Chinnambedu, on the south side of River Arani.


Arunagirinathar has sung 4 hymns ( வேண்டுவன தரும் திருப்புகழ், ஆர்ச்சனைத் திருப்புகழ், தீயவை நீக்கும் திருப்புகழ் and வரம் தரும் திருப்புகழ் ) in praise of  Sri Balasubramaniar of this temple. Of which வேண்டுவன தரும் திருப்புகழ் is given below.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. The Rajagopuram is not straight opposite to Balasubramaniya Swamy Sannidhi. Balipeedam, Peacock Vahana and balipeedam are in front of Sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar Balasubramaniaswamy is in standing posture with peacock vahana. Utsava murtis are in the ardha mandapam.

On the right side is the Annamalaiyar Siva’s and Unnamalai Ammai’s sannidhis. A Rishabam is in front of Shiva’s sannidhi. All the three sannidhis are facing east in a straight line.

In praharam Vinayagar, Adhi Moolavar Sri Subramaniar, Muneeswarar, Venkatarayar, Sri Nagar, Bairavar and Navagrahas.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a maha mandapam. The total temple was constructed / reconstructed during recent years. The sanctum sanctorum is on a adhisthanam and Vimanam is of two tiers. Murugan’s various forms, Sri Valli Marriage, etc are on the Vimana tala and greeva koshtams.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that this temple is of more than 1000 years old. But no evidence is found to prove its antiquity. But this temple exists more the 500 years and 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Murugan of this temple. Thiruvallaur mavatta Tholliyaal kaiyedu, mentions the Murugan idol belongs to Pallava Period. 

Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 04th March 2003 and  recently on Sunday 21st August 2022, after 19 years.


LEGENDS
As per the legend, Rama’s sons Lava & Kusa fought with their father and won in this place.  Siruvar + Ambu ( arrow )+edu  in Tamil சிறுவர்+ அம்பு + எடு- called as siruvampedu- சிறுவம்பெடு ( சின்னம்பெடு ), which has got corrupted to the present name as Siruvarpuri, Siruvai, Siruvapuri, etc.   

Murugan took over the charge of creation, after Brahama couldn't answer the meaning of "om" - Pranava mandra. Murugan is holding accamala and kamandalam, as Brahma sastha, similar to Brahma.
  
Murugan came in Mayil vahana / peacock vahana in dance and gave darshan to Arunagirinathar  in this place. Arunagirinathar also mentions this place as Siruvai – சிறுவை, in his 3rd hymns.

சிறுவ ராகி யிருவ ரந்த கரிப தாதி கொடுபொ ருஞ்சொல்
       சிலையி ராம னுடனே திர்ந்து             சமராடிச்
செயம தான நகர மர்ந்த அளகை போல வளமி குந்த
       சிறுவை மேவி வரமி குந்த                பெருமாளே.

It is believed that any problem will be sort out especially for construction of house will be solved after worshipping Murugan of this temple. Some devotees to provide lock every where in this temple.


Murugammaiyar story...A lady Devotee of this Village, who use to pronounce Murugan’s  from her young age. Even after her marriage she continued the same. On hearing the Murugan’s name, her husband has got angry and ask her to stop pronouncing Murugan’s name.  But the lady devotee didn’t stopped. At one stage, he cut her hand. With the pain, she cried and asked Muruga to help her. Murugan came in the form of a small boy, made her hand as before. This incidence was narrated in Thirupukazh by Arunagirinathar.

தண்சிறுவை தனில் மேவும் பெருமாளே..”

Muruganammaiyar is referred in Sei Thondar Puranam as one of the devotee of Sri Muruga. Thiruvamathur Thavathiru Murugadasa Swamigal also praised her in Sirugugan pathigam.

    திருவிளையாட்டினைச் செய்த சிறுவை நகர்குகனே. .

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted by the devotees, pradosham, Chitra pournami, Sashti, Thai poosam, Karthigai, Kiruthigai, Panguni Uthiram, Kandar sashti, Soora samharam, etc,.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.30 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
CMBT Buses are available from Periyapalayam, Ponneri, Redhills etc.
The place Siruvapuri is about 3.0 KM from Siruvapuri Bus stand on Chennai – Kolkatta national High way. 13 KM from Ponneri railway Station, 18.2 KM from Redhills, 26 KM from Madhavaram Bus Terminus and 35 KM from Koyambedu bus terminus and Chennai Central Station.
Nearest Railway station is Ponneri.

Travellers Mandapam / வழிப்போக்கர் மண்டபம், அமரம்பேடு / Amarambedu, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Travellers Mandapam at Amarambedu was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples visit” – on 30th April 2023. On the way to Kundrathur from Pillaipakkam happened to see this Mandapam on the North side of the main Road.


The Mandapam is of two parts, of which one part is 3 sides closed mandapam with a elevated floor. The second part is the open mukha mandapam, supported by 8 pillars. The Mandapam ceiling has the bas relief of solar & Lunar eclipse, snake catch the frog, Lizard like creature catches the frog, fishes, etc,. The Pillars has the bas-reliefs  related to Vaishnavism. The beams also has the bas reliefs. The Pillar has the bas relief of donors and their wives. The male donor names are engraved above the images.

Some of the donors are.. அமரம்பேடு நயினியப்ப.......குமாரன் முற்த்தியப்ப…(முதலி)யார் சதா சேர்வய்.



Another name as.. அமரம்பெட்டு முற்த்தியப்ப முதலியார் குமாரன் திருவேங்கடம் முதலியார் சதா சேர்வய்.



The mandapam pillar 1721 CE inscription  ( as per Sridaran K ) records the construction of this mandapam by Amarambedu Murththiyappa Mudaliar’s son Nayiniyappa Mudaliar, his son Rasappa Mudaliar. .   

சாலிவாகனன் பிறந்த சதசா….1643 வருடம் இத்தைக்கு செல்லும் பலவ வருஷம் அய்ப்பசி மாசம் 29 சோமவாரம்யிப்படி கொத்த சுபதினத்தில் சவள்வேளாளரில் அமரம்பெட்டு முற்த்தியப்ப முதலியார் குமாரன் நயினியப்ப முதலியார் அவர் குமாரன் ராசப்ப முதலியார் செய்வித்த தற்மம் மண்டபம்.


Now the Mandapam is in sad state and is being used by miscreants. Already the kodungai of the mandapam had fallen down. Trees are grown on the mandapam. A Support pillar was added for the beam to avoid further damage. A Shiva’s stucco image in the mandapam is in damaged condition.

Chelliamman Temple / Sri Selliamman Temple / செல்லி அம்மன் கோயில், குன்றத்தூர், Kundrathur, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Chelliamman Temple at Kundrathur was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples visit” – on 30th April 2023. This temple is about 200 meters from Sri Thiruvooraga Perumal temple and on  the back side of Sri Kanthazheeswarar Temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing North. Trishul, balipeedam and Simha vahanam are in the Mukha mandapam. Stucco image of Chelliamman is on the top of the  mukha mandapam entrance.   Stucco Dwarapalakis are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum. Sri Chelliamman is in the sanctorum, on an elevated level. Amman is in sitting posture with 4 hands. Stucco images of Amman’s various forms are on the mukha mandapam pillars. Nagars and Saptamatrikas are in the praharam.



ARCHITECTURE
The complete temple was constructed with bricks and didn’t  followed any Temple architectural style ( Gramiya Style ). The sanctum sanctorum is in rectangular in shape with an eka tala Salakara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple with Saptamatrikas belongs to 7th Century Pallava period. It was told that the saptamatrikas made of sand stone are in the sanctum Sanctorum till recent years along with Yogeswarar and Vinayagar. The same are replaced with a single Chelliamman. The old saptamatrikas are buried in the praharam itself after a long battle with devotees ( Mr Thiuchitrambalam of Kundrathur ) and historians by the local Trustees. These Saptamatrikas are the earliest ever found in Tamil Nadu. In place of old saptamatrikas, new stone idols are made and installed in a separate sannidhi on the west side of the main temple facing the same direction of North.

This new temple was constructed and maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 25th March 2015.


LEGENDS
It was a practice of establishing Saptamatrikas temple to safe guard the Village, from the evil sprits, forces, deceases, enters in to the Village during Pallava period. Latter the saptamatrikas are replaced with a Single Amman Temple as Ellai Amman temples, Selliamman etc. 

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya, Navaratri, Aadi month Fridays, Thai month Friddays. During Chithirai month, Chithra pournami day annual festival will be conducted. During that time Pal kudam will be carried to the temple in procession and abhishekam will be done to Sri Chelliamman.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted the opening and closing time are unpredictable.

The temple is about 11 KM from Porur Junction, 17 KM from Guindy , 24 KM from Koyambedu and 30 KM from Chennai Central.
