The Kumbhabhishekam of Thiruporur Sri Kandasamy temple was held on 11th September 2014 after renovation. HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
When the original temple was constructed is not known. Later the temple was in dilapidated condition, the same was reconstructed by Srimath Chidambaram Swamigal, who attained samadhi in 1659 CE. His descendants are the Trustees of this temple. East Rajagopuram has the 17-18th Century paintings of Kantha Purana.

The 17th Century composed "Mathikettan Drama" mentions Thiruporur Murugan, Kailasanathar, and Vembadi Vinayagar.

The inscription ( SII Volume XII, No 27, AR 76 of 1909 ) record engraved in Pallava-Grantha characters on two detached pillars, of a mandapa in front of Devanaiyamman Shrine gives the birudas of a Pallava king. From the florid variety of the alphabet used and from the occurrence of the titles Atyantakāma, Atiranachanda, etc., the king may be identified with Narasimha II whose identical birudas are also found engraved in the Kailasanātha temple at Conjeeveram which is definitely known to have been constructed by him. As Tiruppörür is close to Mahābalipuram, it is possible that the pillars belonged to a structural temple of the time of Narasimha II built somewhere in this locality and may have been fixed up in their present position in the Kandasvamin temple at a later date

Kulothunga Chozha-I's ( 1076 CE ) inscription records the endowment of burning lamps and the continuance of Poojas of this temple. For the same arrangements are made.

Vikrama Chozha also gave the gift of lands to this temple.

A Person who belongs to Ilanallur had gifted land for the Uchi kala pooja.

Vijakanda Gopalan's period inscription records the endowment of burning two lamps.

Inscriptions also mention the Utsava murtis of this temple.

The rajagopuram was completely painted and a new arch was also constructed near Temple Tank. Outer Parakaram and inner Praharam were completely paved with granite slabs.

LEGENDS
This is one of the Arupadai Veedu of Murugan, where the demon Soorapadman was killed in the air.

As per the legend  Maha Vishnu and his consort Maha Lakshmi were cursed by Kanva Maharishi. They prayed to Shiva to get rid of the Curse. Shiva came to this place and blessed them. Hence Thiruporur temple is very significant, dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Sri Murugan. As per sthala purana, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena gave protection to Devas and expounded the meaning of Pranava to Agastya Muni.

According to another legend, Murugan enunciated the principle of Pranava or reality to the Devas here

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Kiruthigai, 7 Days annual festival in the month of February, Panguni Uthiram, Thaipoosam, Karthigai Deepam, Kandar Sashti, etc.
