The
Visit to this temple was a part of the “Trichy Heritage Walk” organized by
“Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே- Group”, to the Historical Chozha
period temples, in and around Trichy aka Tiruchirappalli, scheduled on 20th
& 21st March 2021. Even though they were contributed by the
Pallava, Chozha, Pandya, Vijayanagara Kings, and the present Nattukottai
Nagarathars, they are less popular. This place Allur is on the banks of river
Kaveri.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are...
The
temple faces east with a 5-tier Rajagopuram. Nagars are in front of the
Rajagopuram under a tree. There is a mottai gopuram after the Rajagopuram.
Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam, and Rishabam are after the second level mottai
gopuram under a tiled roof mandapam. Balipeedam, Rishabam and Dwarapalakas are also
in the ardha mandapam. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy (Muyalagan is found missing),
Maha Vishnu and Durga.
Balamurugan,
Suriyan Chandran, Bhairavar, Shani, Kshethra Devi (Jyeshta Devi), Uthanga
Maharishi Santhana Krishnan, Vinayagar and Saptamatrikas are in the artha mandapam. In praharam Niruthi
Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Vahanas, Mahalakshmi and
Chandikeswarar. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi at the entrance to artha
mandapam.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple complex consists of Rajagopuram, Sanctum sanctorum, antarala,
artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The Rajagopuram was built during the Pandya
period (the Pandya emblem is on the ceiling).
The adhistanam has the Jagathy with padmam, Virutha Kumuda, and Yazhi vari. The elephant that comes out of Maharathundam looks cute. A Two tier vesara Vimana is
over the sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
As
per the inscriptions, this place was called “Thiruvadakudi” and Lord Shiva
was called “Vadkudi Nathar”, “Thiruvadakudi Mahadevar / Parameswarar”. This Place
was under Woraiyur Kootram, Keel Allur, Kilar Kootram, and Keralanthaka Valanadu
during different periods.
Sundara
Chozha’s period, inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp
by one of his important officials Veerachozha Ilangovel’s son Parantakanar. For
the same gold was gifted.
Parantaka
Choz’s period inscription mentions areas of the Kaveri river bank as “Karikalakarai”.
This word describes the important relationship between Chozha King Karikalan and
the river Kaveri, even after thousands of years.
Kulothunga
Chozha-III’s, period inscription records that the Ambal temple was constructed.
Ambal was called as “Thirukamakotta Nachiyar”.
Parantaka
Chozha’s period inscription records that fields were damaged due to a flood in
the Kaveri River. In place of the damaged land, some other land was given.
The chariot was gifted to this temple by Raja Battar in the year 2018. Maha kumbhabhishekam
was conducted in 2020.

LEGENDS
Looking
at the majestic look of Moolavar Shiva Linga, many miracles might have taken
place due to the grace of Lord Shiva.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special
poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani (Aug – Sept),
Skanda Sashti and Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi (Oct – Nov),
Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai (Nov – Dec), Maha Shivaratri in the
month Masi (Feb – March) and monthly pradoshams.
