Sri Choleeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ சோழீஸ்வரர் கோவில், மல்லசமுத்திரம் / Mallasamudram, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Choleeswarar Temple at Mallasamudram was a part of Namakkal District Temples and Heritage sites Visit on 23rd February 2024. Thanks to Mrs Sakthiprakash who accompanied with me to this Visit. A Kongu Chozha period temple with Vijayanagara Nayaka’s contributions.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a Deepasthambam.  Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are in front of mukha mandapam. Vinayagar is at the entrance of mukhamandapam. Two Rishabas are installed on both sides of the steps of the mukha mandapam. Dwarapalakas are on both sides of the entrance to the ardha mandapam. Moolavar is on a round avudayar. In koshtam, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, and Durgai.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing east on the left side of moolavar( north side ). Rishabam and balipeedam are in front of sanctum sanctorum. Dwarapalakis are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

In praharam 4 Shiva Lingas & a Vinayagar with his vahana in a mandapam, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan, Chandikeswarar, and Navagrahas.



 
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with vedika. The pilasters are of brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, mandi, palakai and pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus. Out of three talas, two tala brick vimanam is above prastaram. The sugam is of Nagara style.

The Mukha mandapa pillars has the sculptures of Nayaka period Donors and their wives.





The 4 Shiva Linga mandapa pillars has the bas reliefs of Koorma, Narasimhar, Ramar, Kinnara, Elephant, Female deity, Hanuman. Going by the sculptures, this mandapam pillars might have been brought from elsewhere may be an old Vishnu Temple.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may belongs to 10th to 11th century and Chozha period inscriptions are found on the adhistanam and sanctum walls. May be constructed during Chozha period and the Moolavar is called as Rajendra Choleeswarar.

The temple was reconstructed during Vijayanagara / Nayaka’s period. The Donors sculptures are found on the Pillars of Mukhamandapam, Shiva Linga Mandapam and Deepa sthambam mandapam.

The inscription at Mathiyampatti, Mariamman Temple records the Gift of Village Uthirapatti alias Thiriyampapuram to this Rajendra Chozheeswarar Temple as Thiruvidaiyattam.

A Chozha King, Rajendra-III’s, 1246 CE inscription starts with his meikeerthi as “Thirumanni valara….”, records the endowment of Naivedyam, to 3 sandhis to Ulakalanthan Vinnagar Temple, by  the Gangaikonda Chozhapurathu Nagarathars. 

The 14th Century inscription records the gift given to this temple for the benefit of Paruthipalli nattu Mallasamudra Gounders, by a person Thoppanathar of Kundrathur.

The 19th Century inscription in the Rishabam Mandapam records the construction of Rishaba Mandapam by Koneri Chetti’s son Krishnanchetti.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Fridays, amavasya days, Adi month Fridays, Pradosham, Theipirai ashtami, Sankadahara chaturthi, Pournami, Kiruthigai, etc,.

The temple will b kept opened between 07.00 hrs. to 11.00 hrs. and 17.00 hrs. to 19.00 hrs.

Pulikuthi Hero Stone / புலிகுத்திக்கல் at Sri Sellandi Amman Temple, Mallasamudram, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Pulikuthikal a Hero stone in Sri Sellandi Amman Temple at Mallasamudram was a part of “Namakkal District Temples and Heritage sites Visit”-  on 23rd February 2024. Thanks to Mrs Sakthiprakash who accompanied with me to this Visit. 


In this Pulikuthi hero stone the hero is killing a tiger with a sword. The sword is pierced through the body of the tiger. The hero is wearing a half dress below his waist. He is shown with big mustache and the tuft is straight on his head.

This hero stone may belongs to 16th to 17th century.

Sri Sellandi Amman Temple / ஸ்ரீ செல்லாண்டி அம்மன் கோயில், Mallasamudram, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Sellandi Amman Temple at Mallasamudram was a part of Namakkal District Temples and Heritage sites Visit on 23rd February 2024. Thanks to Mrs Sakthiprakash who accompanied with me to this Visit. The special features of this temple are the presence of a Pulikuthi Hero stone and a Kulla Deivam for Vellalar, ( one sub sect ) Community.


Moolavar  : Sri Sellandiamman

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing North with a Deepa sthambam in front of a 5 tier Rajagopuram. An oonjal mandapam is immediately after the Rajagopuram.  A small dwajasthamabam, balipeedam and Simhavahana are under the open mukha mandapam, in front of sanctum sanctorum. Dwarapalakis are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Selliamman in sitting posture with 8 hands holding a soolam, accamala, kamandalam, bowl, knife, damaru, and a severe head.

In praharam, Nagars, Hero Stones, Pulikuthi Hero Stone,  Amman may be Kali amman with Simha vahana.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and open mukha mandapam. The total temple was built with cement concrete. A 3 tier salakara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may be of 500 years old and the same was reconstructed during recent years. The temple belongs to Vizhiyan kula Kongu Vellala Nattu Gounders.

Sri Brahma Lingeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ பிரம்மலிங்கேஸ்வரர் கோயில், Kokkarayanpettai, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Brahma Lingeswarar Temple at Kokkarayanpettai was a part of "Namakkal District Temples and Heritage sites Visit" - on 23rd February 2024. Thanks to Mrs Sakthiprakash who accompanied with me to this Visit. There are many special features in this temple, which includes Architecture and History.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram ( Solar and . Rishabam, balipeedam are after the rajagopuram under a mandapam. Vinayagar, Murugan and Dwarapalakas are on both sides of entrance of ardha mandapam. Moolavar is of swayambhu, little large on a square avudayar. Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

In praharam Suryan, Anjaneyar, Venugopalan along with Bhama, Rukmani, Garudan, SaptaKanniar, Vinayagar ( made out of bell rock – bell sound will emanate when tapped ), Maha Vishnu, Nagar, Ayyanar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Bairavar and Chandran.

Ambal is in a separate temple facing east on the left side of the moolavar temple. Ambal is in a standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and mukha mandpam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattaika. The Bhitti starts with vedika. The Pilasters are of Vishnu kantha pilaster with square base, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palaka and pushpapothyal. The prastaram consists of lotus petals valapi, kapotam with nasikudus and bhumidesam. The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to Bhumidesam. Stucco vimanam over the Bhumidesam is of ekatala and the sigaram is of vesara style. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtam.

Solar and lunar eclipse bas reliefs are on the top of the entrance of the Rajagopuram.

The Deva koshtas are constructed like door and round key hole.






HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
This original temple belongs to 10th to 11th century Kongu Chozha period and reconstructed during Vijayanagara / nayakas period..

முதலாம் குலோத்துங்கச் சோழனின் கல்வெட்டு ( 1074 CE ) 'புகழ்மாது விளங்க' எனத்தொடங்கும் மெக்கீர்த்தி இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. பிரமதீசுவரர் கொவில் பூசை வழிபாட்டிற்காக அமது படைக்கும் பொருட்டுப் படைப்புப் பொருள்களையும் அதன் அளவையும்குறிப்பிட்டுத் திருவமுது படைக்க ஆவன செய்யப்பெற்றுள்ளது. இந்தத் திருவமுதுக் கொடை மாதவராசன் என்பவரால் தன் அரசன் குலோத்துங்கச் சோழனுக்கு நன்மை உண்டாகும் பொருட்டு வழங்கப்பெற்றது.
Kulothunga Chozha-I’s ( 1074 CE ) inscription starts with his meikeerthi as Pukazhmathu vilangka… This inscription records the endowment of naivedyam by Madhavarjan, for the benefit of the King Kulothunga Chozha.

விசயநகர பேரரசு, கிருட்டிணதேவராயர் காலத்தைச் சார்ந்த 25.01.1518, தேதியிட்ட கல்வெட்டு பிரமயீசுவரமுடைய தம்பிரானார் கோவிலுக்குச் சங்கமபுரம் என்னும் கிராமம் கொடையாக அளிக்கப்பெற்ற செய்தி குறிப்பிடப் பெற்றுள்ளது. அனைத்து உரிமைகளும் வழங்கப்பெற்றுள்ளது. கிருட்டிணதேவ மகாராயர் 'இராசாக்கள் தம்பிரான்' என்ற பட்டப் பெயருடன் அழைக்கப் பெறுகிறார்.
Vijayanagara Dynasty Achutha Deva maharaya’s 24.10.1530 dated inscription records the gift of the Village Sangamapuram to Brahmaeswaramudaiya Thambiranar. In this Krishna Devaraya was called as “Rajakkal Thambiranar” title.

விசயநகர பேரரசு, அச்சுததேவ மகாராயரின் 24.10.1530, ந்தேதியிட்ட கல்வெட்டு, கிருட்டிணராய நாயக்கருக்கு நன்மையும் பேறும் உண்டாகும் பொருட்டுச் சாம நயினார் என்பவர் பிரமீசுவரமுடைய தம்பிரானார்க்குக் கொடையாகத் தகடப்பாடிப் பாளையமான வழியுடைய மங்கைபுரம் என்னும் கிராயத்தை வழங்கிய செய்தி குறிப்பிடப் பெற்றுள்ளது.
Vijayanagara Dynasty Achutha Theva Maharayar’s 24.10.1530 dated inscription records the Gift of Village Thagadapadi Palayam alias Mangaipuram to Brahma Eswaramudaiya Thambiranar by Samanayinar, for the benefit of Krishnaraya Nayakar.

விசயநகர பேரரசு கி.பி. 16ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு பிரமபுரியீசுவரமுடையார் கோவில் கிழக்குப்புறச்சுவரில் உள்ள கல்வெட்டு, பிரமீசுவரமுடைய நாயனார் கோவில் திருப்பணிக்காவும் கோவில் நட்டுவனுக்கும் பாடுவானுக்கும் இரு கிராமங்களைக் கொடையாக அளித்த செய்தி குறிப்பிடப் பெற்றுள்ளது. கல்வெட்டுச் சிதைந்துள்ளது
The damaged 16th Century Vijayanagara Dynasty’s inscription records the gift of two Villages for the thirupani of this temple and Temple Musician / singer.

இராசகேசரி என்னும் சோழமன்னனின் ஆறாம் ஆட்சியாண்டில் (கி.பி. 11ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு) கரைய வேட்டுவன் காழிப்பிடாரன் என்பவன் அவ்வூர் மாடுகளைப் பிறர் கவர்ந்து செல்லும்போது அவைகளை மீட்டமைக்காக திருவகழிமங்கலம் சபையார் நிலம் கொடையாக அளித்த செய்தி கூறப்படுகிறது. வேட்டுவ குலத்தாராகிய அவர் கரைய வேளான் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது குறிப்பிடற்குரியது.
The Chozha King Rajakesari’s 6th reign year inscription ( 11th Century) at Chandikeswarar Temple lintel records the gift of land to Kazhipidaran by the Thiruvakazhimangalam Sabha, for retrieving the cows when they were abducted by somebody.  In this inscription Vettuva community was called as Karaiya Velan is to be noted.

தனிக்கல்லில் உள்ள இக்கல்வெட்டில் நின்றுபோன ஒரு வாணிகர் கொடை குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது. இப்போது அக்கொடை பற்றிய பழைய ஆவணத்தின்படி மீண்டும் அக்கொடை புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டதாகத் தோன்றுகிறது. இவ்வூர் பேட்டை என அழைக்கப் பெறுவதால் வாணிகர் இங்குக் கூடியுள்ளமை பெறப்படும். காலம் 15ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு.
The 15th Century inscription on a separate stone the discontinued donation of the merchants. As per this inscription, the old donation was once again started. Since this place was called as Pettai, the merchants assembled in this place.

ஊர்மக்கள் இறைவன் பெயரை வைத்துள்ளனர். கொங்கு வேளாளர் சிவன் கோயிலைவிடத் தம் காணிக் கோயில்கட்கே இன்று முதன்மையளிக்கின்றனர். இக்கல்வெட்டின்மூலம் சிவபெருமான் பெயரை மக்கள் சூட்டிக் கொண்டனர் என்பதை அறிகிறோம். காலம் 17ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு.
Another 17thCentury  inscription records that Kongu Velalars named themselves, their Kani Temples instead of Shiva Temples.

LEGENDS
The Koshta murtis are installed at a latter stage. The Koshtas are like doors with key hole. As per the legend, the pralayam will occur when the stone Cock crows and the doors of Kostas opens.

A Purattathi Nakshatra Temple. Devotees worships Shiva to get rid of marriage obstacles, Child boon, etc.
