Nattrateeswarar Temple / Nattatreewarar Temple / Shri Nattatreeshwarar Temple, Kangayampalayam, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

This Sri Nattrateeswarar Temple’s Visit was a part of Heritage Visit to temples, Hero stones and Heritage sites in Erode and Karur Districts, scheduled on 04th February 2020. This temple is in the middle நடுவே ) of river Kaveri on a small rocky hillock. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Nattrateeswarar. Also this temple is middle way between the start point of River at Kudagu and Poompuhar where it meets the sea Bay of Bengal. (The river is 805 Km long and the temple is almost at the centre )

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east on a small rocky hillock in the middle of river Kaveri. May be accessed through a bridge constructed in the recent years ( at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.25 crores ). Cars will go up to the temple base ( before the bridge construction the temple was accessed through Coracles - Parisal ). The temple was built in three levels, depends on the contour of the rock surface. It was told that the sanctums of various deities are constructed in such a way that the circumambulation path will be in the form of “OM” ஓம் ), the pranava mantra. A manadapa was built under the temple complex, which was used as steps during the recent renovation. Vinayagar and Nagars are under a peepal tree at the entrance of the steps. Sri Sthala Vinayagar is at the first level. The Sri Aathi mara Vinayagar / Kaviri kanda Vinayagar ( red in colour ) is under the sthala vruksham Aathi three. The sthala vruksham is on this rocky hill and believed to be of 3000 years old.

Ambal Annapoorani is in the middle level with sanctum and a mukha mandapam. Lord Shiva’s dance postures are painted ( using natural dyes ) on the ceiling of the front mandapam. Nandhi andbalipedam are in the mukha mandapam. Natarajar’s stucco image is in the mandapam wall as bas relief.

On the top level is the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Nattrateeswarar, Nattratu Malai Murugan, Chandikeswarar, Kala Bhairavar, Navagrahas, Saneeswarar, Chandran, Agasthiyar, Suryan and Nalvar. Lord Shiva is in a separate temple with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Arthanareeswarar ?, Brahma and Durgai. In the mandapam sannidhi for Bhoomi Neela sametha Sri Aathi Periya Perumal. Nattratu Malai Murugan is not with his consorts and the legs are in walking posture with a parrot in his hand. It was told that Muruga went forward to welcome the Sage Agasthiyar to this temple with Arunagirinathar as a Parrot.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION   
The original temple was built during 10th Century Sundara Chozha period. An inscription stone, belongs to Rajendra Chozha’s 5th year rule ( starts with ஸ்வதிஸ்ரீ கோப்பரகேசரி பன்மராகிய ஸ்ரீ இராஜெந்திர சோழதேவர்க்கு…. ), in the mandapa is the only proof. The temple was reconstructed and bears a new temple look, with granite tiles all over.

LEGEND
As per the legend The sage Agasthiyar was asked to go to south to balance the earth during the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati, since all the Devas, and rishis gathered for the wedding. There are 5 tasks were assigned to Agasthiyar on the way to South and also Lord Shiva promised him that he will give Kalyana Kola darshan when ever the sage wants. The 5 tasks are to 1. change of the course of direction of the Kaveri river from North to south. ( In another version Vinayagar in the form of Crow toppled the Kamandalam in which 7 holy rivers was brought by Agasthiyar. These 7 rivers flowed as Kaveri ). 2. To put an end to the torture on human and sages by Asuras Vallavan and Vatabi. 3. To support Rama  for the victory over Ravana. 4. To create a Tamil Sangam for literature at Madurai ( ?)  and 5. To bring out and enhance the ancient secrets of medicines.

In the process of killing the Asuras Vatapi - Vatabi in the form of food offered by Vallavan,  was digested by Agasthiyar and Killed Vallavan, the sage Agasthiyar has got the Bramhahathi dosham for killing these asuras. To get rid of the dosha Agasthiyar made a Shiva Linga from the river sand and prayed for 12 days Continuously at this place. At the end of 12th day,  it was on Chithirai 1st, he tried to dissolve the Shiva Linga but couldn’t do so. Instead he heard the Voice of Lord Shiva, the he wants to stay here and bless the Devotees. Then Agasthiyar Continued to wards south to complete his mission. Since the sage installed the Shiva Linga in the middle of the river Kaveri and offered only the porridge made out of Bajra and curd.

FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS
On Chithirai 1st, lakhs of devotees gathered at this temple for the Darshan of Lord Shiva. ( Agasthiyar completed his 12 days prayer  on this day ). As a Prasad porridge made out of bajra, a type of millet mixed with Curd கம்பங்கூழ் ) will be offered. The bajra will be brought form Tiruvannamalai and Curd will be from Erode. This includes the offering from the Devotees also.

Adi pooram is also celebrated in a grand manner with 108 conch abhishekam . People believes that all the doshas will be removed if one prays Lord Shiva of this temple.

HOW TO REACH:
From Erode to Kodumudi, take left at Chavadipalayam Pudur junction and you can reach the bridge on the Kaveri to the temple.
The temple is 15  KM from Erode, 112 KM from Coimbatore and 420 KM from Chennai.

Hero Stones / Nadukarkal / Veerakallu at Patlur, Olagadam, Anthiyur of Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

03rd & 04th February 2020.
During our Temples Visit in Erode and Karur Districts, scheduled on 03rd & 04th February 2020, we came across some hero stones either installed in side the temples or in open ground. Some of the Hero stones are still under worship on daily or annually.  In addition to the Hero stones we happened to see loose sculptures and megalithic period burial monuments.

TITLE              : Pulikuthi Sati Stone
PLACE             : PATLUR, in Erode District
LOCATION       : Kariyakaliamman Temple
PERIOD           : 15th to 16th Century.
DETAILS         :
This pulikuthi hero stone is found in the Kariyakaliamman temple. In this the hero is killing a tiger with a spear. The hero wears a half dress below his waist. A kattar is shown on his waist. The tiger’s front legs are shown resting on the Hero’s left hand and one of the back leg rests on the hero’s left knee. His wife who took sati is shown on the left side.



TITLE              : Hero Stones, Sati Stone and Navakandam of Lady
PLACE             : Olagadam in Erode District
LOCATION       : Sri Olageshwara Temple
PERIOD           12th to 13th Century.
DETAILS         :
This group consists of 3 Hero stones of which two belongs to a sati stone in which the hero and his wife are carved separate stone slabs. In the hero stone the hero  holds a sword in the right and and a different weapon in the left hand. On the top Sun and moon are shown. On the right a cow is shown. This hero might have  died in the process of safeguarding the cattle ( ஆநிரை மீட்டல் ).

Believed that the wife of the hero is shown with a pot in the right hand may be a toddy pot and the left hand is in the raised position. What is shown in that hand is not known.




The third nadukal is  carved out of white stone, in that a lady is shown holding her knife on her right hand. Since the Nadukal is damaged couldn’t get more details. This is one of the rare Hero stone erected for a lady who took the navakandam

LOCATION       : Near Vageeswarar Temple
PERIOD           : 14th Century.
DETAILS         :
This group consists 3 Hero stones. The center one was erected for a hero, who holds a parasu like a weapon in his right hand and a shield in the left hand. He might have died in a war. Inscriptions are found on the right side corner of the hero stone.



On the left side slab stone a Horse with three ladies are carved. The center lady carries a child on her hip and the other lady carries something on her head.


On the right, a memorial stone erected for a Horse. A seat is shown on its back. This shows that the horse might have died in the war along with the hero.

PERIOD           : 16th to 17th Century.
DETAILS         :
This hero stone is erected outside the temple. The hero holds a spear in his right hand and a shield in the left hand. A simple half dress without any frills is shown on his waist. A Kattar is also shown on his waist. Tuft is also shown above his head.

Sri Anai Muneeswarar Swamy Temple Temple / ஸ்ரீ அணை முனீஸ்வரர் சுவாமி, Kodiveri Dam, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

03rd February 2020.
This Sri Muneeswaran Temple’s Visit was a part of Heritage Visit to temples, Hero stones and Heritage sites around Anthiyur and Athani, scheduled on 03rd February 2020. This is one of the 400 and odd years old temple  at Kodiveri Dam, in Erode District, on the banks of river Bhavani.  The name Munnai Eswarar was corrupted to the present name of Muneeswarar  and the place Koduveli as Kodiveri.

Some of the important features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east in between Kodiveri Dam and the diversion canal. The temple is dedicated Lord Shiva as Muneeswaran.  The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, artha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. Lord Shiva’s standing image in stucco is above the Mukha mandapam. The old temple was reconstructed completely, and kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 31st May 2015. Moolavar is Lord Shiva as Muneeswaran.

In prakaram Saptha Kannis, Oonjal / Swing, balipeedam, Tridents and stucco images of Two Muneeswaras and a single muni.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
The dam was believed to be built by Kongalvan a Vettuva Gounder King of Kongu Nadu Erode region. The Temple was built before 12th Century. From the inscriptions this place Kodiveri  was called as Koduveli  ( கொடுவேலி ) and Lord Shiva was called as Aludaiyar thirumunnai Andar ஆளுடையார் திருமுன்னை ஆண்டார் ), Thirumunnai Aludaiyar திருமுந்நையாளுடையார் ) and Munnai Eswarar.

The 1152 CE, 12th Century Kulothunga Chozha Period,  Siruthalai Vettuvar Thaman thaman Irungolan gave donation for burning two santhya Deepam.

The 1211 CE, 13th Century Veera Rajendra Chozha period inscription records that Kaarai vettuvar Thavaaveyanen of Vada parisara nadu, gave the donation of money towards burning of Sandhya Deepam.

The 1236 CE, Veera Rajendra Chozha’s period inscription records the donation towards burning of Sandhya Deepam by Siruthalai Vettuvar Irungolan Kanthamanen.
We are able to locate the original temples inscriptions and found only three. It was told that other inscription tablets were taken to Erode, by the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. Out of 3 inscription, one is in readable condition. The inscription details are…

The inscription belongs to Veerarajendra Chozha’s 9th year rule ( 1216 CE ), records Kodiveri Siruthalai Vettuvar Irungkolan kanthamanen donated money to Siva Brahmanan Alavantha Bhattan for burning a Sandhya Deepam for Lord Munnaieswarar.

The temple is 8.3 KM from Sathyamangalam, 16 KM from Gobichettipalayam, 45 KM from Bhavani, 55 KM from Erode, 75 KM from Coimbatore and 430 KM from Chennai.

Sellandiamman Temple / Chellandi Amman Temple, Athani, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

03rd February 2020.
This Sri Sellandiamman Temple’s Visit was a part of Heritage Visit to temples, Hero stones and Heritage sites around Anthiyur and Athani, scheduled on 03rd February 2020. This is one of the 400 and odd years old Amman temple  at Athani in Erode District. Athani is on the banks of river Bhavani. Sri Sellandiamman is a Village guarding deity.

Some of the important features of this temple are..
The temple is facing north. At the entrance of temple gate a Nagar is on the right and a man with folding hands in anjali hastham is on the right. A Deepasthambham is immediately after the entrance gate. Dwarapalakis are on both sides of artha mandapam entrance.  An Oonjal / Swing, balipeedam and a Simha Vahana are in front of Sanctum Sanctorum. Sellandiamman’s stucco image is on the top of the artha mandapam entrance. In sanctum sanctorum Sri Sellandiamman is in sitting posture with 8 hands.

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. The artha mandapam was built during 17th Century Ketti Mudali’s period. An asbestos sheet mukha mandapa is in front of the sanctum sanctorum.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum was built on a padabandha adhisthana. The sanctum is in rectangular shape and an eka thala Vimana is on the sanctum with 3 kalasas. Amman’s stucco images are on all the 4 sides of the vimana.   

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The east side artha mandapam wall has the 17th Century Ketti Mudali King Nalludayappar Kumara Kettiyar period inscription. This inscription records the construction of artha mandapam by a Vadakarai Nattu Vellalar Vanakula Chinna Periyana Goundar. This Amman was mentioned as Kondaththu Sellandiamman. It also mentioned the Tharamangalam Ketti Mudali’s official Perumal Deekshithar’s name.

The temple had a 13th century Kongu Pandya king Sundara Pandyan’s 30th year rule  inscription, inscribed on a stone installed in play ground. The inscription  records that Vadakarai Nattu people gathered together  and donated a land to Kanchikoil Nadu Kugalur Perumal Sundara Tholudayar. This mentions the land with trees and the wells. This inscription stone is missing and we are not able to trace it.

The temple may belongs to 13th Century and latter reconstructed during 16th to 17th Century Vijayanagara period / Ketti Mudali period.
