Sri Panmozhiyammai Sametha Sri Thiruvaaleeswarar Temple / ஶ்ரீ பன்மொழியம்மை சமேத ஶ்ரீ திருவாலீஸ்வரர் கோயில், திருவனைக்கோயில் / Thiruvanaikoil, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Thiruvaleeswarar Temple at Thiruvanaikoil of Uthiramerur Taluk in Kanchipuram District, was a part of Heritage Visit to Salavakkam, Porpandal and Peranakkavur, Shiva Temples, Pallava period Inscriptions and Heritage Sites on15th October 2021. Thanks to Kesavan for his help and travelling with me in this Heritage Visit.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing west with an entrance mandapam on the east side. Stucco images of Lord Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar, Vinayagar and Murugan are on the top of the mandapam. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the temple without direct access. The entrance to the ardha mandapam is from Maha mandapam on the south side and the entrance to the Maha mandapam. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In Prakaram Vinayagar, Chandikeswarar, Nalvar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Suriyan and Chandran.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, Maha mandapam and a Mukha mandapam. The adhisthana is on lotus pedestal. The Adhisthana consists of Jagathi, Vrutha Kumuda and Patti. The Wall portion starts with Vedhika and the pilasters are with square base, Nagabandham, Kalasam, Thadi, Lotus mandi, Palagai, Veera kandam and Pushba Pothyal.

The prastaram is of Kapotha style with Nasis. Flower motifs with various images decorates the Nasi koodu. Kumbhalata / Kumbha panjaras are between the Koshtas. The Vimana stucco portion starts on the Bhoomi desam. A Stucco 2 tier Gajabirushta vimana is on the  bhoomi desam. Stucco images of the Lord Shiva as Dakshinamurthy, Natarajar, Ambal worshiping Lord Shiva,  Maha Vishnu and Brahma are on the Vimana.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple may be constructed during 13th  to 14th  Century and has the contributions from Pandyas, and Vijayanagakas. The Vijayanagara period inscriptions records the endowment of burning Lamps, poojas, for the same, money, lands were gifted to this temple.

Kochadaya Varmar Tribhuvana Chakravarthi Sri  Sundara Pandya period inscription records the endowment of burning Sandhi lamp for which donations were made.

As per the records of HR & CE the temple had 7.74 acres of dry / punjai and 7.37 hectares of punjai land and an annual income of Rs 35000.

The temple is under the control of EO of HR & CE Department and activities are maintained through the Hereditary Trustees.


LEGENDS
It is believed that this is one of the temple in which the Vanara King Vali installed and worshiped Lord Shiva and Agasthiyar also worshiped.

Since Lord Shiva is facing North, this temple is considered as a Guru Sthalam. It is believed that Lord Shiva teaches the Gnanam ( Knowledge and wisdom ) and it will be auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on Thursdays, to excel in studies. It is also believed that this is a marriage boon sthalam, after removing obstacles in the marriage process.

Apart from oru kala pooja, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Arudra darshan, Panguni Uthiram, New Year days and all important days.

Mela Tirupati Sri Padmasani Thayar Samedha Srinivasa Perumal Temple / மேல திருப்பதி ஸ்ரீ பத்மாஸனி தாயார் சமேத ஸ்ரீனிவாச பெருமாள் கோயில். வேங்கைவாசல் / Vengaivasal, Medavakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

This Srinivasa Perumal Temple is on a small / tiny hill at Medavakkam, like Tirupati, a KM away from the Medavakkam Junction. Hence this temple is called as Mela Tirupati. Devotees considers this temple as equivalent to Tirupati Balaji temple.

Some of the Salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east  with Two entrance arches, of one is one the Velachery to Tambaram Main road and the other one is at the base. From the hill base the path to the temple is sloppy / ramp with 14 steps. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Garudan are in front of the mukha mandapam. Moolavar Sri Srinivasa Perumal is little shorter similar to Tirupati Balaji holding Sangu & Chakra in the upper hands and lower hands are in abhaya and kati hastam. The moolavar is believed to be of swayambhu. Utsava Murti Arulvanna Perumal is with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi are in front of moolavar.  The other utsava murtis are Lakshmi Narasimhar, Santana Gopalan, Kalinga Nardanar and Krishna.

In Praharam, Garuda is opposite to Moolavar Sannidhi, Bhakta Anjaneya as Anugraha Anjaneya is opposite to Padmasani Thayar sannidhi, Ramar Paduka opposite to Andal sannidhi, Adi Varahar is in standing posture holding Sangu & Chakra in the upper hands and lower hands are in abhaya hastam and Kati hastam ( believed to be of swayambhu ), Yoga Narasimhar ( Both are facing north ), Sudharsanar is with multi arm in the pose of moving forward & on the back side Yoga Narasimhar, Pattabhi Ramar with Sita, Lakshmana & Hanuman and Venugopalar.

ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum,  ardha mandapam. On both sides of the ardha mandapam, sannidhis are for Sri Padmasani Thayar ( In sitting posture with 4 hands in abhaya varada hastam ) and Andal. An Ekathala Dravida Vimana is over the main sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Hayagreevar, Narasimhar, Varahar and Maha Vishnu are in the Greevam. Stucco images of Garudan is on the 4 corners of the greevam. Ekathala Nagara style Vimanas are also constructed on Sri Padmasini Thayar and Andal sannidhi.

The Adhisthana is not followed any of architecture styles. Two Small balipeedas are on the back side corners of the adhishtanam.  A Pillared mukha mandapam is in-front of  the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Ceiling of the Mukha mandapam has the bas reliefs of Fishes and Snake with Sun & Moon. This represents the Solar and Lunar eclipse. 




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
There are some traces of 16th – 17th Century Vijayanagara period  inscriptions found on the west and north wall of sanctum sanctorum. Hence the original may be existed before 16th Century. During Vijayanagara period Shiva and Vishnu temples were constructed in and around Medavakkam. A Shiva Temple at Medavakkam has the Vijayanagara period architectural features  and inscriptions. The original temple was reconstructed after completely dismantled and reconstructed after the stones are numbered with Tamil numbers.

Jeernodhara maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 06th March 2003 and in the year 2015.

The Road side and the Hill base entrance arches are built in 2006 and inaugurated by the Tambaram MLA SR Raja, on 18th August 2006.




LEGENDS
Srinivasa Perumal is very much similar to Tirupati Balaji, but shorter in height. Hence, it is believed that, those who couldn’t go and offer prayers at Tirupati Balaji temple can offer at this Mela Tirupati Srinivasa Perumal temple. The devotees follows the procedure of worshiping the moolavar after worshiping Adi Varaha Perumal, similar to Tirupati.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Poojas are conducted as per Pancharatra agama. Apart from regular Poojas special poojas are conducted on Kalyanotsavam in the month Panguni ( March – April ), Garuda Utsavam in the month Purattasi 3rd Saturday ( September – October ), Pavithrotsavam in the month Karthigai ( November – December ), Vaikunda Ekadasi in the month Margazhi ( December – January ), English New Year day and Tamil New Year day in the month Chithirai ( April – May ), Rama Navami, Gokulashtami, Navaratri, Deepavali, Purattasi Saturdays, Hanuman Jayanthi  and all important Vaishnava functions.

Neelavarna Perumal Temple / ஸ்ரீ நீலவர்ண பெருமாள் கோயில், நன்மங்கலம் / Nanmangalam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Sri Neelavarna Perumal Temple  at Nanmangalam was a part of “Pallavapuram”, called during Pallava Period, now called as Pallavaram. Pallavaram is known for its Prehistoric existence through finding of stone tools, by Bruce Foote and the 7th Century Rock Cut Cave excavated by Pallava King Mahendravarman-I, which is presently occupied a Mosque / Dargah.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with an entrance Gate.  Deepa sthambam, Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Garudan in anjali hastam  are in the Dasavathara shobana Mandapam. Stucco images of Maha Vishnu’s Dasavathara is on the top side wall of the Mandapam. Moolavar Sri Neelavarna Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhoodevi. Perumal is holding Sangu and Chakra in the upper hands and lower hands are in Abhaya and kati hastam. Utsava murti is with consorts, Andal, Nammalwar, Ramanujar and Krishna are in front of Moolavar. Anjaneyar’s bas –reliefs are on the both sides of the ardha mandapam entrance. In Koshtam Lakshmi Varahar, Lakshmi Narasimhar and Lakshmi Hayagreevar.

In Praharam Nammalwar ( Kaari Maaran ), Ramanujar, Sudharsanar ( Chakkarathalwar ) & Narasimhar,  Anjaneyar and Maha Lakshmi as Vedavalli Thayar.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a Dasavathara Sobana Mandapam / Mukha mandapam.  The ardha mandapam holds the original pillars. A 3 tier stucco Dravida Vimana ( Anandanilaya Vimana ) is above the sanctum sanctorum. The First level sala koshta images of Lakshmi Varahar, Lakshmi Narasimhar and Lakshmi Hayagreevar are very much similar to the Deva Koshta images. In addition to that, images of  Vishnu’s various postures  and Vimanam thangis are on the Vimana. Since adhisthana is below the ground level, what type of architecture followed is not known.  

The Chrompet Road is passing  on the north side of the temple, abutting the sanctum sanctorum. Due to this there is no prahara on the north side of the temple. A Separate Iron sliding door is provided to access the north side Koshta murti Lakshmi Hayagreeva  and do pooja by the Bhattars.



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple is believed to be constructed during  8th Century Pallava period may be during the Pallava King Rajasimha Pallava ( 2nd Narasimha Pallava ) who ruled between 680 – 728 CE. An inscription stone ( the letters are not legible to read ). During Pallava period, this place might have been gifted to Brahmins or Vedic Brahmins were lived in large numbers and called as Chathurvedimangalam and now called as “Nanmangalam”.

The Pallava period brick temple was reconstructed and present structure may be 300 to 400 years old.  Maha samprokshanam was conducted on 30th April 2006 and in 2010, after constructing the Thayar, Sudharsana and Yoga Narasimhar Sannidhis.

The present Dasavathara Shobana mandapam was built in memory of Arasanipalai Sri Ragunathachariyar, Srimathi Sr Rangammal and Srimathi Sri Ethugiriammal at a cost of Rs 10816.00. 

The temple is being maintained by the "NEELAVARNA PERUMAL BHAKTHA JANA KAINKARYA SABHA", which was stated on 14th April, 2003. Air conditioning  and Electrical wiring were done through Sri Rajagopalan Bhattacharya swami ( previously working in Thiru Vada Mathurai - Mathura Divya Desam ), Sri Bhaskar Rao and other devotees.

LEGENDS
This Neelavarna Perumal Temple is believed to an abhimana sthalam of the “Thiruneermalai Neelavarna Perumal” Temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams.

Poojas are conducted as per the Vaikhanasa Agama earlier was changed to Pancharatram as per Perumal's wish.

This temple is a parihara sthalam and dosha nivarthi sthalam.  It is believed that Sri Neelavarna Perumal used to talk to the devotees directly.

Once a devotee was in distress and tension came to this temple and prayed to Sri Neelavarna Perumal, to get relieved. After praying, he had forgotten the way and was walking through the fields. On the way happened to see a herdsman with cattle.  The devotee asked the way to the herdsman. The herdsman pointed the right path and told further that his problems will be solved after praying Sri Neelavarna Perumal. Due to tension and distress, the devotee passed the hurriedly. After walking some distance, the devotee turned back to say thanks. To his astonishment the herdsman disappeared and only cattle were grazing. Next day the devotee had received a telegram, saying that, the cause for this distress was wrongly reported. Thus Sri Neelavarna Perumal proved his existence and talking to his devotees.      

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Purattasi Utsavam, Kalyana Utsavam, Annakooda Utsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi, festival of Nammalwar Moksham  and Vaikunta Dwara opening, Thiruppavai Utsavam, Navaratri Utsavam with Unjal Seva, Deepavali, Karthigai, Gokulashtami, Uriyadi Sevai, Sri Rama Navami, Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Visakam, Satyanarayana Pooja on Full moon days and Makar Sankranti.

Sri Muchukundeswarar Temple / Muchu Kundesvara Temple / ஸ்ரீ முசுகுந்தேஸ்வரர் கோயில், கொடும்பாளூர் / Kodumbalur, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Muchukundeswarar Temple at Kodumbalur was a part of Heritage Visit to temples around Keeranur in Pudukkottai District, organized by “Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே” group on 2nd and 3rd, October 2021.  This place is called as Chengal medu, since there were no of temples might have existed and the Nandis are scattered around this area as its remains.

Some of the salient features of this temple are …
The temple is facing east with a Nandi in mandapam. A mandapa with squatting lion / simha pillar entrance  is on the left side of the temple. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South.  No images are found in the Koshtas.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Mukha mandapam. Ambal temple is in the open mukha mandapam facing south. The sanctum sanctorum is with simple padabandha adhisthana. Jagathi, threepatta kumuda and pattigai is in the adhisthana. In Bitti no vedhigai is found. The Brahmakantha Pillars divides the wall in to Karnapathi, Salaipathi. Panchara is in the akarai. The slaipathi is extended outwards forms as pathra salai. The pilasters has the usual components of Kalasam, Thadi, Mandi, palagai, veerakandam and Pothyal. Tharanga pothyal is shown of the pilaster top.

The prastaram is with valabi, kapotham and viyalavari. Nasis and palaikarukku are found on the kapotham. Nethra nasi is found on the karnapathi. Bhutaganas are in the valabi.

Veena Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu and Brahma are found on the first level Vimana.  The greeva portion also has the  koshtas the similar images of first level. The thala Rishabas are on all the four corners.

The Sikaram is of Nagara style with maha nasis on all the four sides. Alpa nasis also found in between maha nasis. The Kalasa / stupi is also similar shape of the greevam. Since the complete Vimana is built with stone from Adhisthana to stupi, the vimana is suddha Nagara Vimana.









HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscriptions this place was called as Thirumudhukundram and Lord Shiva was called as Thirumudhukundramudaya Nayanar. It is believed that this temple was built during 10th Century, by the Mahimalaya Irukkuvel, one of the Chieftain of Parantaka-I, The sanctum sanctorum was built during Parantaka Chozha’s period and Ambal sannidhi and mukha mandapa was built at latter date during Vijayanagaras.

The Parantaka Chozha’s 14th reign year inscription records that this temple was constructed by the  Mahimalaya Irukkuvel alias Parantaka Veerachozhan Kunjaramallan.

Kulothunga Chozha’s 6th reign year inscription records that the renovation of the temple, which are found damaged.

A fragment inscription on the Mukha mandapa adhisthana kumuda mentions the name of Sundra Chozha, PeNdati / பெண்டாட்டி, and Uthama tha. Here the Pendati means not the wife, but a cook who cooks food / servant.

The inscription on one of Mukha mandapa pillar records that the pillar was donated by Kodumbalur Kolanchetti Kambanatha Santhathanukka Pallavaraiyan.

Kovi Rajakesari’s 11th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by a person of Kodumbalur of Urathur Kootram.

Chonadu vazhangiaruliya  Sundara Pandyan 28th reign year inscription Siva Brahmin Alwan Thirukokodungundramudayan alias Kulaseka Brahmatharasan, Madathipathis and Temple officials gifted 6 ma land for the artha jama pooja and Naivedyam.

Kulasekara Pandya period inscription records that the   Visayapancharan thirumadapalli was gifted by the Mudhusolkudi Nattu nattavar ( thanmam ).

The Vijayanagara King Mahamandaleswarar Ariyarayan  Mallikarjuna rayar period inscription records that the Adaikalamkathar daughter Vazhiththunai Perumal Pillaiyilla kaana…  ( son …?), and her daughter Meiyarai and her sister Vazhithunai as Devaradiyars given to this temple. They were given 3 ma land and paddy.

Kaoparakesari Chozha Irukkuvel’s 7th reign year inscription records that as per the request of Azhaganveerachozha Viswakarma and Kanmalar, a kala pooja on their name was created and Land was gifted for Naivedyam and prayer.

The temple is about 9 KM from Viralimalai, 37 KM from Tiruchirappalli, 38 KM from Pudukkottai, 39 KM from Keeranur and 365 KM from Chennai.
