As per the legend the 11 temples of Thirunangur are closely associated with each other. After Datchayini jumped in to Dakshan’s Yaga kunda. Shiva took the body of Datchayini and danced furiously. Each time the jada mudi touches the ground, 11 forms of Shivas appeared. The Celestial deities afraid, that if Shiva’s dance continued, the entire creation will be ceased. So they requested Maha Vishnu to stop Shiva’s dance. On Seeing Maha Vishnu Shiva became normal and requested Maha Vishnu to appear 11 different forms at this place, Thirunangur. LEGENDS
Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is in sitting posture, keeping the right leg on a pot… butter pot. Since Utsava murtis are obstructing the straight view, the Bhattar used to show the lamp and ask us to bend and see Kudam and leg. It is believed that Perumal came to this place, dancing with the butter pot. Hence Moolavar is called as kudamadu Kootha Peruman.

It is believed that the purana, in which Krishna holds the Govarthanagiri as umbrella to save the Villagers and cattle from continuous rain, is connected to this place.

The Balipeedam is little tall with steps in front of the Rajagopuram. This signifies that, one has to step up to reach Maha Vishnu.

On another legend, the sage Udhangar learned Vedas from Sage Vaidhar in a Gurukulam. As a Guru dakshina, sage Vaidhar’s wife asked the ear ring of Queen. Without hesitation Udhangar went and asked the Queen to give as Guru dakshina to sage Vaidhar. Since the Queen, knows the Guru Vaidhar, gave her ear rings to Udhangar.

One his way to Gurukulam, he was very thirsty and hungry. He happened to see a Shepherd with a pot on his head. Udhangar  requested Shepherd to give him the content of the pot to quench his thirst and hunger. The shepherd replied that, the pot contains the cow’s dung and urine and also told that his Guru Vaidhar also consumed. On hearing this Uthanga muni kept the kamandala and the ear rings aside and consumed. In the mean time a robberer took away the earrings and hide in a hole of a tree. The Shepherd asked Uthangar to seek help from the person who is riding on a horse. As requested by Uthangar, the horse rider chased the roberer and horse spit fire on the roberer, who was hiding in a tree hole. Unbearable heat, the roberer came out and handed over the earring.

Udhangar returned back to the Gurukulam and narrates the incidences happened, to his Guru. His Guru Vaidhar told that, the Shepherd was non other than Maha Vishnu who tested the Guru Bhakthi. The Horse rider was the Indra and the Horse was Agni.

As per the another legend the 11 temples of Thirunangur are closely associated with each other. After Datchayini jumped in to Dakshan’s Yaga kunda. Shiva took the body of Datchayini and danced furiously. Each time the jada mudi touches the ground, 11 forms of Shiva appeared. The Celestial deities afraid, that if Shiva’s dance continued, the entire creation will be ceased. So they requested Maha Vishnu to stop Shiva’s dance.
