Gandhi Square, Homage Memorial Stupi and Maharnonbu Pottal, Karaikudi, Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu.

On the way to Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, happened to see this Gandhi Square and Mahar Nombu Thidal, an important place of Karaikudi.  


Gandhi Square and Maharnonbu Pottal are in the heart of the City Karaikudi. Many historical events are happened in this place. Sri Subramania Bharati, the great Poet, freedom fighter visited karaikudi in 1906. Composed and sang a poem in praise of Nattukottai Chettiar Youths for their contribution for the development of Karaikudi region.

Mahatma Gandhi also visited in 1927 and delivered the two historical speeches. In 1948, the First Prime Minister of Independent India addressed from this place, when he came for the inauguration of CECRI ( Central Electro Chemical Research Institute ).

This Gandhi statue with the Mandapam was constructed and declared open by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 17th July 1955. The construction expenses are contributed by the employees of the Municipality 





A Lamp ( …? ) with a pedestal was also erected near the Homage memorial stupi. This was gifted by Mei. Aa. Annamalai Chettiar on 18th February 1916.



A Homage memorial stupi was erected for those noble stalwarts  whose service and Sacrifice made India free independence day 15th August 1947.






This place is also being used for observing Muharram, by Muslims community.  Also this place is being used for conducting, Circus, Exhibition, etc,.

Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple / மீனாட்சி சுந்தரேஸ்வரர் கோவில், Kallukatti, காரைக்குடி / Karaikudi, Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple at Karaikudi was a part of Shiva, Vishnu Temples of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th September 2023. This Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple at Karaikudi, is generally known as “Nagara Sivan Koil” and the same is in the heart of the City Karaikudi. This place was once called as Karaikudi.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier rajagopuram and the temple tank is on the south side. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam, rishabam are in the open mukha mandapam. Moolavar is on a square avudayar. Natarajar Sabha and utsavars are in the ardha mandapam. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Sarabeswarar,  Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.  

In praharam, Somaskandar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Sundara Vinayagar, Valli DevaSena Subramanian, Nalvar, 63var, Tripurasundari, Gajalakshmi, Saraswati, 63var, Navagrahas, Bairavar, Chandran and Suriyan.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi with Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam and rishabam.  Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam. Pradosha poojas will be conducted to the Rishabam in-front of Ambal Shrine also.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a open mukha mandapam. The open mukha mandapam was built during recent years with cement and concrete. Main shrine and Parivara sannidhis are constructed on a upanam and adhistanam with jagathy, kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with Vedika. The Pilasters are with square base nagabandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi palakai and pushpa pothyal. The walls has many bas reliefs such as Bairavar, Natarajar in Oorthuda thandavam, etc. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam and yazhi vari. The Kostas are padra and sala style. The main shrine wall was built with black stones. Kumbha panjaras are in the karna pathi and antarala wall. A 3 tier stucco nagara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. 






A 12 Rasi bas relief is on the ceiling after rajagopuram. The Praharam ceiling was painted with Shiva with Meenakshi’s kalyana kolam, Ambal’s various forms, etc,.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the original temple was constructed  by the Pandya King Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan, during 13th – 14th Century. The original dilapidated temple was reconstructed and brought back to worship by the Nattukottai Nagarathar, keeping some parts of the original temple. This Nagara Shiva temple was re-constructed and consecrated on 22nd April 1872. The Rajagopuram was constructed by Karaikudi Rama. Atha. Ramanathan Chettiar and consecrated on 10th September 1888 CE.

The Electric lamp in-front of the temple was gifted by Sri Panai, Me. Me. Palaniappa Chettiar on 17th May 1940.

The Temple tank was desilted, Nandavanam was created by the Chettiar clan of Karaikudi, Ilayathangudi, Okkur,  Rama. Sa. Ra. Pangalis and SL. NS Narayan Chettiar on 04th August 2006.

LEGENDS
As per the Legend, Shri Shiva came to this earth as Sundareswarar and Married Sri Meenakshi, the daughter of the Pandya king. This legend is applicable to Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. Many temples in Tamil Nadu are named as Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. Hence Thirukalyana utsavam will be held similar to Madurai, during annual festival or Brahmotsavam.



Once karai.. plants are grown abundantly in Karaikudi. Hence this placed was called as Karaikudi.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Amavasya, Pournami, Nataraja Abhishekam, Ashtami theipirai, Navaratri, Sashti, Panguni Uthiram, to Sarabeswarar on Sundays, Rahu Ketu Peyarchi, Shani Peyarchi, etc,.

Meenakshi Sundareswarar Thirukalyana Utsavam will be celebrated in the month Margazhi and Shiva and Meenakshi, Vinayagar, Murugan with his consorts and Chandikeswarar will be taken in procession.

Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ பசுபதீஸ்வரர் கோயில் / Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra / ஸ்ரீ சதாசிவ பிரமேந்திரர், வெளிச்சை / Velichi, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

A continuation post of Sri Veera Anjaneyar Temple post... 

After darshan while I cross the main road, happened to notice the sign board of Sri Pasupatheeswarar, Prithiyankara Devi temple at Velichi village. The village is about 2 KM on the south side of Kelambakkam to Vandalur main road. The 2 KM stretch is a typical village dusty road with sine wave formation ( bumpy).

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple is being managed by the present Sri Sada Shiva Brahmendra, who was born as Sri Thathreyar, Viswakarma in the previous births.  Sri Bramendar was a close associate to Kumbakonam Thiruvisanallur Ayyaval. Sri Sadguru was born in the place called Bhagavathapuram. He is also praised as Gnancheri Gnanigal.

The Shiva temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram, balipeedam and Rishabam. Ambal name is Sri Simapriyal facing south. In side the complex sannidhis for Sri Viswaroopa Anjaneyar, Sri Seetha Lakshmana Ramachandra Moorthy, Vinayagar, Sri Subramaniar, Prathyangira Devi and idol of Shiva with three head, Vallalar, Adhi moorthikal, Suryan and  Chandran.

In front of Temple Sri Bramendar’s jeeva Samadhi mud with Shiva Lingam and bilva / Vilva tree. Present Sri Sadguru was at the temple artha mandapam  in mounam during my visit.

After Darshan of Sri Pasupatheeswarar returned back to main road and took the Kelambakkam to Vandalur main road. Reached home via Mambakkam, Ponmar, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai and Velachery.

From Mambakkam, turned to left and I proceeded to Pudupakkam, about 4 KM before Kelambakkam. Sri Anjaneyar is on a Hill, left side of main road.

PUDUPAKKAM SRI VEERA ANJANEYAR TEMPLE
Some of the important features of this temple are....
Sarvasakthi Vinayagar Sannidhi is at the base of the  hill. Stucco Periya thiruvadi and Chinna Thiruvadi are at the beginning of steps. The temple is on a small hill with about 100 steps neatly paved. Road facility is also there to climb up to the top of the hill with vehicle.

Moolavar is of relief looking north. The sanctum was originally built with stone and latter new structures were added. Sannadhi of Sri Ramar, Seetha Lakshmana is at the front of Sri Anjaneyar.

Arulmigu Vairavar Swamy Temple / அருள்மிகு வளரொளிநாதா் வடிவுடையம்மை திருக்கோயில் / Vairavanpatti / வைரவன்பட்டி, Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Vairavar Swamy Temple at Vairavanpatti near Karaikudi was a part of Shiva, Vishnu Temples of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th September 2023. This is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. Even-though this temple was dedicated to Shiva, importance and poojas are done mainly to Bairavar also called as Vairavar. Hence this place is also called as Vairavanpatti.

Some of the salient features of this Temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. A Vinayagar temple is on the left side, a mandapam and the temple tank is in front of the temple. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and rishabam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar, Subramaniar are at the entrance of Maha mandapam. Moolavar in the sanctum is on a square avudayar. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai are in the koshtam.

In Praharam Ambal Periya Nayaki, Bairavar with a separate kodimaram / dwajasthambam, Palliyarai, 63var, Somaskandar, Valaroli Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar Visalakshi, Sri Valli Devasena Arumugar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar,Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Adi Avudai Nayaki with rishabam, Bairavar, Chandran, Suryan and Navagrahas.




ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam and adhistanam. The Adhistanam is on a padma peetam, jagathy, kumudam and pattika. The Bhitti starts with vedika. Pilasters are with square base with naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai and pushpa pothyal. The Kostas are padra Kostas in sala style. The prastaram consists of madhalai valapi, kapotam with Nasi kudus, and yazhi vari. The Nasi kudus has beautiful miniature bas reliefs of Shiva’s various forms, Mahavishnu’s avatars, and the puranas are sculpted beautifully. Kumbha panjaras are in karna pathi and out side of antarala wall.  A 3 tier brick vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.

As per Sivagangai Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, The temple measures by 298’  X 198’ and front face measures 199’ X 196. The Height of the Rajagopuram is 60’.9”.

The Bairavar sannidhi and Dakshinamurthy’s shrine / Kostas are built with black granite stones.

The central part of the temple and the corridor parivara sannidhis are elevated from the ground level. The circumambulatory path is around the central shrine. The Corridors are supported with stone pillars with exquisitely carved bas reliefs of various deities, Rishis, munis, animals, flowers etc.

Pillars ( from the ceiling pothyal, baravahas ), Ceilings are painted colourfully.  Bairavar and Shiva & Parvati, Kalyana kolam, etc, are painted on the ceiling.







HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the Sivagangai Mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, This place was existed before 11th Century. The 11th Century inscriptions in vattezhuthu on a stone slab records the Name of Shiva as “Thirumayanathevar”.

Jadavarman Sundara Panyan’s period ( 13th Century ) inscriptions records the gift of land to this temple after purchase. Also the inscription mentions the money under circulation was called as Chozhiyanar “Pazhangkasu”.

This is one of the 9 Shiva temples of Nattukottai Nagarathars. As per the inscription the temple thirupani ( re-constructed ) was done in the year 1864 CE.

Electric Lightings are provided to this temple on 16th September 1947, by Theyinar clan of Nattukottai Nagarathars. 
 
Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 31st January 1982, 9th February 1996, 20th August 2008 and 06th February 2022..



LEGENDS
As per the legends when the asuras tortured the Devas, sought the help of Shiva to escape from asuras. Shiva advised devas to come to this place dense forest once. Devas came to this dense forest and found Shiva and Parvati as Valarolinathar and Periyanayaki. Shiva destroyed the asuras and saved the Devas.
