Ashtalingams around Thiruverkadu - Varuna Lingam, Sri Jalakandeswari Samedha Sri Jalakandeswarar Temple / வருண லிங்கம் / ஶ்ரீ ஜலகண்டேஸ்வரி சமேத ஶ்ரீ ஜலகண்டேஸ்வரர் கோயில், Mettupalayam, Veeraraghavapuram, Avadi, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

This Sri Jalakandeswarar Temple at Mettupalayam, Veeraraghavapuram, a part of Avadi is one of the ashta lingams around Thiruverkadu, Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, ie Eight Shiva temples on eight directions of Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple. This temple is on the West direction.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with out any proper temple like structure. Moolavar and Ambal are in a Shed. Avudayar is little below the ground level.

Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar ( without images )are on the back side of the shed. There are shrines for Chaithaya Devi, Swarna Bairavar without images.


ARCHITECTURE
The temple don’t have a proper structure.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed the Shiva Lingam is more than 1000 years old and the old temple was destroyed to age.

LEGENDS
It is also believed that this is one of the 108 Shiva Lingas installed and worshiped by Agasthiyar in Thondai Nadu.  

During celestial wedding of Lord Shiva with Parvati, all the Devas, sages, maharishis, Munis assembled at Mount Kailash. So the earth on the north went down and south rose up. Seeing this Lord Shiva asked Agasthiyar to go to south to balance the earth. On the way to Podhigai hill Agasthiyar installed and worshiped Shiva Lingas on various places. After installing a Shiva Linga at Thiruverkadu, the sage Agathiyar prayed Lord Shiva for the darshan of Lord Shiva with Parvati’s kalyana / marriage kolam. Immediately Lord Shiva gave darshan to Agasthiyar in kalyana Kolam. When Parvati asked what will Lord Shiva do, if an ordinary devotee wishes to see him...?.  Lord Shiva immediately manifested himself in the form Shiva Lingas on the eight directions around Thiruverkadu, Sri  Vedapureeswarar temple. 

All the eight Shiva Lingas are….  

Some Devotees believes that the Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple on the erikarai Shiva Lingam is the Esanya Lingam and not the one in the midst of the kazhani /field. Hence written the details of both the temples in separate posts.

Devotees worships Shiva to get rid of deceases, to get child boon, to get wealth and prosperity.

Oru kala pooja is conducted and special pooja is conducted on Sankatahara Chaturthi, Pradosham, Kiruthigai, Deipirai ashtami, Pournami, Maha Shivaratri days etc,.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, opening and closing of the temple are unpredictable. Since there is no compound wall, one can have darshan at any time.

The temple is in an open area at Mettupalayam. The temple is about 1 KM from Mettupalayam, 4.5 KM from Thiruverkadu, Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, 6.5 KM from Avadi, 17 KM from Koyambedu Bus Terminus and 23 KM from Chennai Central station.

Thanjai Mamani Koil / Sri Veera Narasimha Perumal Temple / ஸ்ரீ வீரநரசிம்ம பெருமாள் கோவில் / தஞ்சை மாமணி கோயில், Yazhi Nagar, Thanjavur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is one of the 108 Divya Desams - Vishnu Temples on the banks of River Vennaru. There are three temples forms one Divya Desa  Temple, which are 200 meters to 300 meters apart from each other called as Thanjai Mamani Koil. The other two are Sri Manikundra Perumal Temple and Sri Neelamega Perumal temple. In ancient days this place was called as Yazhi Nagar. 


Mangalasasanam was done by Thirumangai Alwar ( 953, 1090, 1576, ) Nammalwar (3139 ) and Bhoothathalvar ( 2251 )

Some of the important features of this temple are….
The temple is facing East with a Mottai Gopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam and Garudalwar are immediately after the entrance mottai Gopuram. Moolavar Narasimhar is in in sitting posture, folding the left leg and right leg is lifted and rests on a peeta. Right hand is on the knee and left hand is on the thigh. Sridevi and Bhoodevi are on both sides of Narasimhar. Garudalwar sannadhi is in the front mandapam.

In the mandapam sannidhi for Sri Ranganathar, Varadharajar, Visvakshenar, PeriyaNambikal, Aalavandhan, Ramanuja and Manavala Mamunigal, Thirumangai alwar.

In praharam Thanjai Nayaki Thayar ( in a separate temple facing east ), Andal and Thirumangai Alwar.

Utsava Murthis of Manikundra Perumal  Temple and near by temples are kept in side the sanctum sanctorum for safety reasons. 



ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam with kapotam and Adhistanam with jagathy, Vrudha kumudam and Pattikai.  The Bhitti starts with vedika. The pilasters are of Vishnu kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai and poo mottu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam and viyyalavari. The temple was constructed with stone from upanam to prastaram. The Vimanam above the prastaram was constructed with bricks. The Brick Vimana is of Two tiers. Maha Vishnu’s Various forms are on the Vimanam. The sigaram is of Vesara style. Vimanam is called as Vedasundara Vimanam.

Vijayanagara period Yazhi pillar and pallava period squatting lion pillars are on both sides of well.

How do they got these two Pallava period Simha Pillar and Nayak's period Yazhi pllar. May belongs to the original Temple. If these belongs to this temple then temple must be at least 600 to 700 years old.  Now installed for the well.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple belongs to 7th to 8th Century and the same was reconstructed and mukha mandapam was added during Maratha period. Marathi inscriptions are found on the pillars, which records the significant contributions done by Maratha King Saraboji, to this temple. Marathi inscription is found on the wall. 


LEGENDS
As per the legend Sri Veera Narasimhar took the form of Yazhi to Kill demon Thanjaka, who took the form of elephant. Hence this place was called as Thanjai Yazhi Nagar or Thanjamapuri and latter it became Thanjavur.

It is believed that Markandeyar worshipped Sri Narasimhar of this temple.

Ashtalingams around Thiruverkadu – Yamalingam, Sri Maragathambigai Samedha Kailasanathar Temple / யமலிங்கம் - ஶ்ரீ மரகதம்பிகை சமேத கைலாசநாதர் கோயில், Senneer Kuppam / Senneerkuppam, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

This Sri Kailasanathar Temple at Senneerkuppam, is one of the ashta lingams around Thiruverkadu Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, ie Eight Shiva temples on eight directions of Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple. This temple is on the south direction, called as Yama Lingam. The temple is located in the midst of residential flats.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with an entrance from backside. Balipeedam and rishabam are in-front of the mandapam. Moolavar is little big on a round avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai.

In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, An Amman, Bairavar and Navagrahas.

Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing south. Ambal is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.


ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a open mukha mandapam.  The sanctum sanctorum is on an adhisthanam built with stone. The Bhitti and the Vimana are built with bricks. A three tala Dravida Vimana is on the sanctum Sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Narasimhar and Brahma are in the 1st tala and greeva koshtams. But 2nd Tala has the Bairavar stucco image in the place of Brahma, which is unusual.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is at SenneerKuppam on South side of Chennai to Vellore High way. From Chennai turn left on Avadi road, then turn left on Vellalar street and again turn first right and you can see the temple about 100 meters distance.
The temple is 3.3 KM from Poonamallee Bus Terminus, 4 KM from Poonamallee by pass flyover, and 8 KM from Maduravoyal Flyover bridge and 12 KM from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.
Nearest Railway station is Koyambedu Metro.
