This temple is a part of our Heritage Visit to Chozha Period Temples on the previous day of Ponniyin Selvan Meet at Thanjavur Periya Koil. This Temple was built by Kulothunga Chozha. Except some inscriptions ( latter period ), no inscriptions was  found and old inscriptions might have been destroyed during renovations.

Some of the important features of this temple are...

The temple is facing west with a 3 tier Rajagopuram is about 2 feet below the ground level.  Nandhi, Dwajasthambam and Palipedam are in front of Rajagopuram. Chozha period inscriptions are there on the side wall of the Rajagopuram passage.

In the prakaram Sannadhi for Navagrahas, Panchabootha Lingas, Suryan, Bairavar, Naalvar, Sandikeswarar, Thiyagarajar, Gajasamkaramurthy, Murugan and Gajalakshmi. Ambal is in a separate temple facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram.

In koshtam Vinayagar, Dhakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai. Lord Shiva is in the form of Gajasamharamoorthy.

The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala,  Arthamandapam and muka mandapam. The temple has undergone during Vijayanagara Period, but Rajagopuram was spared.

The legend, Saints and the Tharukavana incidence  applied to Thiruparaithurai is also applicable to this temple. The blessing of Lord shiva and Bruhan Nayagi is the best medicine for the suffering caused by the birth ( Piravi ). People pray Lord shiva and Bruhan Nayaki for marriage, Child and education excellence.

As per the legend, Lord Shiva chopped the 5th head of Brahma  at Thirukandiyur at one of the atta veeratta Sthalam. Brahma lost his  memory, who he was. He heared an asariri, stating that that he is Brahma and Lord Shiva chopped his 5th head and worship lord Shiva of this temple after creating a theertham, Lord Shiva gave dharshan on Chitra month aswini nakshathram day and got  back his memories and conscious. Hence Iraivan at this temple is called as piravi maruntheeswarar. It is a Aswini nakshathra parikara sthalam.

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

Thiruthuraipoondi is 30 KM from Mannarkudi, on the bus route Mannarkudi to Vedaranyam.
