Velliangiri Andavar Temple / வெள்ளியங்கிரி ஆண்டவர் கோயில் / “THEN KAILAYAM” - Velliangiri Hills, Poondi in Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu. Yatra - 2011, My Experience

18th April 2011
On the 9th morning, I went to Velliangiri Hills to have the darshan of Sri Lord Velliangiri Andavar. At about 09.00 hrs in the morning started to climb from the foothills.  started alone. Yes, alone with a strong desire to make this trip alone. Except tired and thirsty I  never faced any problem. Reached to the top by 14.00 Hrs and had a good darshan. Taken rest for an hour and climbed down.

( The view of Velliangiri from Fourth Hill)

The aim of making in the daytime is to see nature’s beauty or the god's gift to mankind. Reached back by 19.00 Hrs to the base temple. It was a wonderful experience. Here are some photographs taken from my  Sony Ericsson X10 mini mobile with a 5 MP camera.

The following are some tips  for people who take adventures with
  • Less luggage and more comfort.
  • Carry at least 2 liters of good drinking water.
  • Carry some sweets
  • Do not carry any plastic items / carry bags
  • Carry some food, though some shops on the route where only junk foods will be available.
  • Carry a bamboo stick ( available at the base at cost)
  • Some amount of practice with barefoot is required.
All the best to the devotees who wish to make this yatra

  1. Thanx for the post. Gives me the courage to go alone.

It is compulsory that the yatra be performed with bare foot?

    1. Dear Mr Parthipan,
You can climb by Shoe or Chappel and no body compels you climb by bare foot. But the Devotees believes that the hill itself is holy place and also you have to pass through the base temple. Since most of the devotees climb with bare foot and we have to give respect to their feelings also. Moreover there is no throne or sharp stones on the path and any body can climb with bare foot. And also it is good for health to climb with bare foot.

  4. This Veliiangiri hill is in the western Ghats near Coimbatore on the way to Siruvani Dam, which is the drinking water source to Coimbatore.
Form Coimbatore Bus stand buses available to reach the foot hill, and the Place is called as POONDI. Isha Yoga centre is on the way to the foot hill. You can search the web you can get more details or you can contact me over my land line or mobile

  5. Dear Soulmates,

I made it my yatra last week. Really it was one of the best yatra in my life. i wondered and came to believe on shiva after this yatra only. because, the linga and the cave were created by nature itself. But one thing i worried about i missed jeevasamadhi's of some siddhars there. anyway i hope i will make it frequent trips there.

    Thanks,

    Regards,

  6. kindly let me know is climbing hills and trekking is the only way to reach to have dharshan of Sri Lord Velliangiri Andavar or is there any vehicles available that can take us there. Since my grand mother is a great devotee of Lord Shiva would like to visit this place but the trekking journey seems to be tough for my grand ma..

  7. Dear Anita,
Climbing and trekking is the only way to reach the Top hill. The path is not like Sabari Malai where a dolly service is available. Here even a single person needs support to climb. You might have seen the pictures of the paths. Very few old ladies climb may be within 60 years. Transport of materials from base to 6th hill shops ( During April & May season ) manually.

Hi All, Please note for those who want to visit Velingiri Hills, They are advised that who have heart problem and above 40 years of age to avoid and Females donot take this trip and they stay in the first hill and wait for their folks to come down, they cook food and give to the people.

I have travelled to Velingiri hills twice and if god permits one more trip now.

  10. Very good to hear the same. I climbed Thrice after 60. During season above 70 will be trekking. If you have strong will you can do it. Rest lies with Lord Shiva. I will be planning this years trip during March / April.
All the best for the next trip also.

    1. My advise is do not go alone..still if you like to do please do it during April may months either on Saturday or Sunday day time..so that many people also will be going..the other months and other days may not be suitable for single person's yathara...all the best...
