The visit to this Sri Neeli Amman Temple at Kandiankoil was a part of the “Kongu Nadu Heritage Visit to Temples, Hero stones, Ayyanar and Jyeshta Devi
Sculptures around Kangayam” in Tiruppur District. The temple is under palalayam
and idols are kept in a shed. The Locals call this temple Azhagu Nachi Amman
Temple.

The temple is facing north with a Deepasthambam. The main temple is under construction with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. Terracotta Horses and a few images are found after the right side of the entrance. Neeliamman is a Nisumbasoothani or Mahisamardhini. There are three similar images of which 2 nos are kept in a small sanctum sanctorum. Female and Male Dwarapalakas are in front of the small sanctum. A Hero stone ( ...?) and Simham are in front of the temple. All three images are with 8 hands holding various weapons and similar postures. The makudas are Jwala makuda and Virisadai.

As per the iconography of the idols of Neeli Amman, the original temple may belong to the 11th to 12th century. An Ayyanar with his consorts on both sides is available in the middle of the village near the ration shop (details are posted separately).
