The visit to this Sri Nageswara Swamy Shiva temple
at Koduvai was a part of the “Kongu Nadu Heritage Visit of Temples, Hero stones,
Ayyanar and Jyeshta Devi Sculptures around Kangayam” in Tiruppur District. Koduvai
was also called Koduvayur, Koduvayil, Kottaivayil, etc. It is believed that
due to drought and heat many places in the Kongu region had turned to deserts. Due
to that, the places obtained the names begin with “Kodu” ex. Kodumudi,
Kodumanal, Kodumalai, Koduvai, etc,.
ViNNalantha Perumal Temple is close to this Shiva temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple
are...
The temple is facing east with an entrance mandapa.
A Deepasthambam is in front of the temple. The Deepasthambham base has
bas-reliefs of Vinayagar, A Cow worships Lord Shiva by milking, and Nandi Devar in standing posture. A Madapa is at the
entrance of the temple, Stucco image of Lord Shiva as Rishabarooder is on the
top of the mandapa. Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the entrance mandapam.
Sabha mandapam is in the artha mandapam with utsava murthis. In koshtam
Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
In Prakaram Suriyan, Vinayagar under Vanni Tree,
Mappillai Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Ayyanar, Jyeshta Devi (
details will be posted Separately ), Chandikeswarar, Saneeswarar, Navagrahas,
Bhairavar and Chandran.
Ambal is in a separate Temple like Sannithi facing
east on the right side of the Moolavar. The Ambal temple consists of a sanctum
sanctorum, an artha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in
the Mukha mandapam. A Two tier vesara Vimana is over the sanctum.
Stucco images of Lord Shiva, Ambal, Saraswathi, and Mahalakshmi are in between Moolavar and Ambal Sannidhi. Saraswati is in a
lotus pond with flowers. There is an ant hill on the right side of Ambal sannidhi. Devotees pray
here for marriage and Child boon. Also, this is the only place where one can
have the darshan of Ambal, Saraswathi, and Mahalakshmi.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple complex consists of Sanctum, Antarala,
Artha mandapam and a Maha mandapam. The adhisthana is of simple Padabandha. The
half pillar or the pilaster has the reliefs of karukku with flower motifs. A
beautiful Kumba Panchara is also seen in between two pilasters. The south side
entrance to the artha mandapam is with a porch supported by two pillars. A
stucco image of Natarajar’s dancing posture is on the top of the porch.
The sanctum sanctorum was built with stone up to
prastaram and a 2-tier stucco vesara vimana is over the sanctum sanctorum. Bas-reliefs
of a Crocodile, a Fish, a Dancing girl, a Snake, A soldier on a horse Killing a
pig, A snake catcher with a snake,
eega mruga, a tiger attacking a lady, and Yazhi are on the walls of the temple.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that this temple belongs to the 12th
Century built during the Chozha period. As per the inscriptions, this place was
called Mullaivanam. Lord Shiva was called Nageesuraswamy. The temple was
renovated completely in recent years. Some of the inscriptions were lost
and the remaining do not have continuity since the stones are not kept in their
original places.
Kongu Pandyar Veerapandyan’s 6th reign
year ( 1261 CE ), inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp
by Vellalan Manjan alias Kaliyan Kazhi Gnanasambandan, for which one Achu was received by Siva Brahmins Kundran
Avudayan and Chokkan Andan.
Kongu Pandyar Veera Pandya’s 12th reign
year ( 1268 CE ), an inscription records the endowment of burning a Sandhya lamp
for which one Pazhanchalakai Achu was
received by Siva Brahmins Kundran Avudayan and Chokkan Andan. In the same King’s
14th reign year ( 1270 CE ), the inscription records the endowment of
burning a sandhya Deepam by Sirukali Sirupillai alias Sannatha Narainthan for which 4 Achu were gifted to this temple.
An inscription from the 13th century without the King’s name records the endowment of burning a sandhya Deepam for which 4 Achu were gifted by Nangai’s son.
Vikrama Chozha-III’s 12th reign year (
1285 CE ) inscription records that Saadayar KaNNan of Sempoothi had donated
the South entrance door frame of maha mandapam.
An 18th-century inscription records the reconstruction of the Maha mandapa by Pillai Gounder’s son Chinnaiyan, who belongs
to Othalar Kulam. The old mandapa was damaged since it was built with bricks
and wood Utharam/beams.
LEGENDS
This is a parihara sthalam for Rahu and Kethu dosham. Devotees worship Lord
Shiva in large numbers on Rahu Ketu Peyarchi days to get relief from the
adverse effects. People also worship to
get a wedding boon and remove obstacles in the wedding process.
It is believed that Lord Shiva will cure any ailments
related to the eye. A Devotee of Kanchipuram has got his eyesight back due to the
grace of Lord Shiva and Ambal of this temple.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are
conducted on Fridays, Pradosham days, Maha Shivaratri, and Rahu Ketu Peyarchi
Days.

to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is about 500 meters off from the main Road,
Tiruppur to Dharapuram.
The temple is 17 KM from Kangayam, 20 KM from
Palladam, 24 KM from Tiruppur, 27 KM from Dharapuram, 56 KM from Coimbatore, and
459 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Tiruppur.
