It was  planned to visit 4 Shiva Temples and an Amman temple of Thaiyur, near Kelambakkam  on 21st July 2021, of which Azhakeeswarar temple was closed during my Visit. This place was called as “Thaikaja Muruganur” ( Thaikajam – means Sand stone in Sanskrit ), since  Lord Muruga was made of Sand Stone at Sri Murugeeswarar Temple, which has got corrupted to the present name of Thaiyur. It was learnt that there were 7 Shiva Temples in this Village Thaiyur of which 3 are not exists now.  This Mareeswarar temple is in the middle of the Village.

The super structure Vimana is of 2 tier  in Vesara style. First level and Greevam has the  stucco images of Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was told that the temple was built by Kalapala King whose image is on the ardha mandapa wall with latter Pallavas & Chozhas contributions. or during the same period of Sri Murugeeswarar Temple of this Village. Going by the architecture of the temple with old stone pilasters, the temple may belongs to 15th to 16th Century ( claimed to be of Pallava period ).

The temple was reconstructed with the blessings of Nerur sathguru Sadasiva Brahmendra. After reconstruction the Maha Kumbabishekam was conducted in the year 2007 and then in 2017 and in 15th July 2019 after constructing the Rajagopuram in presence of Thirumudukundram Veera Saiva Adheenam, 24th  pattam and Sri-la-Sri Rathna Velayutha Sivaprakasha Paramachhariya Swamigal.

LEGENDS
It is believed that the temple was constructed by a King called Uthanda kalapalar. A bas relief of this King was inside the artha mandapam wall, which is now hidden inside the newly built Palliyarai.  But there is no enough evidence to prove the same. There is no traces of inscription to prove its antiquity.
It is believed that this is also a parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala Pooja, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Arudra darshan, Sankatahara Chaturthi, Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi, Tamil New year’s day,  Aani Thirumanjanam, Manickavasagar Guru Pooja , Kiruthigai,  and Karthigai Deepam.
