HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTION
As per Kanchipuram mavatta
Tholliyal Kaiyedu..
The Parantaka Chozha-I's
13th reign year ( 920 CE ) inscription records this name of the place as
"Velima Nallur - வெளிமா நல்லூர்". Velima nallur was a Nadu in OoRRukattu Kottam during the Chozha Period. Also, the inscription
records the Moolavar of this temple as "Nal iIakkeesvarar - நல் இணக்கீஸ்வரர்".
The inscription also records that a person called Nochi Kizhan Kaliyaperumal
had given gold to the Administration in charge of this region, for constructing
this temple. Further mentions that if the temple was not constructed, Gold in terms of Manjadi ( amount is not known ) has to be paid
by the Nattar as a penalty.
A recent period inscription is available
at Sri Shanmuga Vinayagar Temple on the north banks of Temple Tank ). As per
the inscription this place was also called Samarapuri.
After
it had become dilapidated ( The Shiva Linga avudayar and Rishabam was found
damaged condition ), in 1896 CE, Kodi
Samarapuri Mudaliar and his brother Shanmuga Mudaliyar reconstructed this
temple through the sthapathi Ganesha Achari. The above works were done through
own fund of Kodi Samarapuri Mudaliar. The required stones were brought from
Pattimalaikuppam alias Sankarapuram. A new Shiva Lingam with Rishabam was made
and installed. In 1906 Arumugar and Tripura
Sundari Amman idols are also made as new. Singara Mudaliar established the
Navagrahas. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted. The temple affairs were looked
after by Samarapuri Mudaliar as a Trustee.
Due
to various unknown reasons the Villagers didn’t like Samarapuri Mudaliar to continue as a trustee
and filed a suit in Poonamallee and Thiruvallur Court. Even though the judgment
has come in favor of Samarapuri Maudaliar, relieved himself from the trustee.
In
1918, with the same sthapathi, Vinayagar temple was constructed in the same place
where his brother Shanmuga Mudaliar planted the sapling of the Arasamaram / peepal
tree and named it Shanmuga Vinayagar Temple. The Vinayagar temple was
consecrated on 11th August 1920.
With
the wishes of Samarapuri Mudaliar, his great grand son M Balasubramaniyar,
established, Sri Kamakshi Amman Samedha Ekambara Nathar, Sri Srinivasa Perumal,
Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Sri
Bairavar, Nagar, Sri Dakshinamurthy, Nardhana Ganapathy, Sri Lingothbavar,
Brahma and Durgai are in the Shanmuga Vinayagar Temple and maha Kumbhabhishekam
was conducted on 13th April 2009.
LEGENDS
Adhitanam
of Sri Viyaasaala Saraswathi Swamigal (54th Madathipathi ) is in the
praharam and believed that Siddhars worship Lord Shiva of this temple in the
form of a snake. To prove the same, a Cobra was found inside the sanctum
sanctorum, and a picture is hung in the temple.

Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Pradosam, maha Shivaratri
day, Panguni Uthiram Thirukkalyan Peruvizha with Thiruveethi Uzha.
