Buddha, Amman and Maha Vishnu Loose sculptures at Kalakattur, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Buddha loose sculpture at Kalakattur was a part of Temples and heritage sites around Kanchipuram, scheduled on 10th July 2021. This Buddha sculpture is on a Manmedu in front of Mariamman temple, close to Sri Agneeswarar Shiva temple at Kalakattur. The Manmedu is on the east side of the lake called Putteri also called “Chandramega Thadakam” during the Chozha period. Can be reached either through a wheeler or by walking on the lake bund. Paddy fields are surrounded on the three sides of the temple.

The Buddha is in ardha padmasana sitting posture with long ear lobes and Ushnisha on the top of the head. The thiruvasi or the mahara thorana behind his head was sculpted as an integral part of the head. The dress folding is shown on the left side of his chest and shoulder. The head with thiruvasi is in broken condition.  As per the experts, this Buddha may belong to the 11th to 12th century.

In addition to the Buddha sculpture, there is an Amman sculpture without the head and hands on the left side of the Buddha. There was a maha Vishnu sculpture without a head that was also found on another Manmedu. This Maha Vishnu was sculpted out of green stone. Both loose sculptures may belong to the Shiva Temple or might have been brought from elsewhere and dumped here.
