The
visit to this Sri Mouna Guruswamigal Samadhi Temple in Appar Nagar near Appar
Swamy Temple in Tiruvottiyur Kuppam, Tiru Chinna Kuppam, Tiruvottiyur was a
part of “Hero Stones and Siddhars of Tiruvottiyur Visit”, on 11th September 2022.
This
visit was mainly focused on the Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples of Tiruvottiyur.
Most of the Siddhar Jeeva samadhis in Chennai belong to Siddhars who migrated from
various parts of Tamil Nadu and other States, like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,
etc,. The Siddhar Samadhis in and around Thiruvottiyur are closely linked with
the 11th Century Pattinathar and 19th Century Vallalar
alias Ramalinga Adigalar, considering them as their Gurus. Even though the Siddhars attained mukti, away from
Tiruvottiyur, they were brought to Tiruvottiyur and laid in Samadhi,
considering this place as a holy place.
Siddh is described as …

MOUNA
GURUSWAMIGAL
The Details of this Mouna Guruswamigal are not
known. A book on Kavi Yogi Suddhananda Bharathi was written by him and also he
composed a song called Ongara Thodilile. He used hum in Kannada as “opparu
illae.. nee onthey.. ithayathaalli .. om Sivam”.. this meaning in Tamil is “ஓம்
சிவ மயம்..நீயின்றி யாரும் இல்லை.. நீயே உறுதுணை.. இதயத்தில் இருக்கும் சிவனே ஓம் சிவ”
மயம்”.. From this, it was understood that
Mouna
Guruswamigal belongs to Karnataka.
During the initial days, Mouna GuruSwamigal stayed at Choolai, Pattalam, Kutty Andavar Temple. He used to cook and eat in an earthen
pot. Daily morning he used to walk up
to the Chennai Harbour area through the Arunachaleswarar temple on Palliappan Street. The
rice merchants will wait for Swamigal’s arrival. Swamigal will stand in front
of a shop and the shop owner will put rice and moong dal in his pot. After
receiving the rice, Swamigal blesses all the merchants and returns back to
Choolai. Kutty Andavar Temple. That day
the merchants will earn good profit. On the way to Kutty Andavar Temple, Swamigal
used to go inside Sri Arunachaleswarar temple and pray to Shri Shiva. After returning
he will cook the food eat a portion and the balance will be fed to the Dogs. Swamigal
sat on a Thinnai of a house, opposite to the temple.
After some days
Swamigal didn’t go to the harbor area to get rice, since most of the time he sat
in meditation. Lord Shiva came in the dream of a Devotee Thooya Pathini of
Vyasarpadi and asked her to feed Mouna Guruswamigal. Thooya Pathini gave
food every day and worshiped him with flowers. The next day, Thooya Pathini
happened to see a silver coin in her rice pot, due to the siddhu of Mouna
Guruswamigal. During that time he treated a drunkard man and Painter's leprosy
through his siddhu. He used to practice Navakanda Yoga also, ie, separating his body into 9 parts and
joining them together later after the yoga. In
the Nava kanda yoga his head will face Thiruvannamalai and the rest of the parts
will be eight directions. Initially, the people are afraid of seeing Swami’s
Navakandam, but later they understand.
Mouna Guruswamigal didn’t allow anybody to come
nearer to him and waited for his 1st disciple Balu alias P
Selvaranga Mudaliar to arrive. Swamiji accepted Balu as his
disciple and taught him everything, which includes Thirukural,
Gnanavasiththam, Thirumanthiram, Kaivaliyam etc,. With the Gnanathiristi, Swamigal knows his samadhi
day, stops eating, and informs Balu. Swamigal attained Samadhi on 7th
February 1902, Friday evening at 07.00 pm. His body was brought to this place and
kept in this adhistanam. Later a small temple was built by his disciples and
devotees.
