The
visit to this Sri Nimileeswarar temple at Koodappakkam was a part of “Shiva and
Maha Vishnu Temple of Puducherry Visit” on 07th March 2026.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple faces east with an entrance from the south. Stucco dwarapalakas are at
the entrance of the Ardha Mandapam. Rishabam, balipeedam, wooden dwajasthambam,
Bairavar, and Suryan are in the metacolour sheet mandapam. Moolavar is on a
raised level on a round avudaiyar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy,
Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai.
Ambal
is in a separate sannidhi that faces south. Ambal is in a standing posture with
abhaya varada hastam.
In
the outer praharam, Nalvar, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chozha
period Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Vinayagar with Nagaras and an Ambal idol,
under a peepal tree.
ARCHITECTURE
The
total temple was constructed with brick and cement concrete. The temple
consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and a metacolour sheet
mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam and pada bandha
adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts
with vedikal. The pilasters are of brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam,
palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with
nasikudus. A one tala vesara vimanam with greevam and vesara sigaram are on
the bhumi desam. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the tala
and greeva koshtams.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the original temple belongs to the 13th to 14th
Century Chozha period. The temple was completely reconstructed with bricks and concrete. The Moolavar, Rishabam, and Chandikeswarar belong to the Chozha
period.

Chaturthi days.
