Sri Sakkarai Amma Temple / ஸ்ரீ சக்கரை அம்மா சமாதி கோயில்… A Siddhar Samadhi Temple, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Thiruvanmiyur is also a siddhar Bhoomi, like Thiruvotriyur, where Pamban Swamigal Jeeva samadhi, his disciple Sri Subramaniya Dasar, Siddhar Sri-la-Sri Balaramalinga Nathar, Sri Valmiki Munivar Temple, and Sri Sakkarai Amma Jeeva Samadhi Temple are located around Sri Marundeeswarar Temple.  Sri Sakkarai Amma Samadhi Temple is located near Kalakshetra Foundation. Anandamba, who does meditation with chakra and Shiva Linga was called as Sakkara Amma, which has got corrupted to Sakkarai Amma.

The Samadhi temple is facing east with Vinayagar and Murugan on both sides. Sakkarai Amma’s image is in the sanctum along with Srichakra and Bana Lingam ( Believed to be worshipped by Sakkarai Amma. In Koshtam Ramana Maharishi, Kanchi Maha Periyava, Raghavendra Swamigal, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Pamban Swamigal. Another Image of the Sakkarai Amma is in the discourse hall. Dr Nanjunda Rao’s image is on the south west corner. There is a meditation Hall on the right side of the Samadhi Temple.  

A Brief biography of Sri Sakkarai Amma…

Sakkarai Amma as Anandamba was born at Devikapuram in Tiruvannamalai District to Sesha Gurukkal in 1854 CE. During her young age, She used to sit in-front of Priyanayaki Amman’s sanctum sanctorum, staring at Amman and reciting slokas. She was married as a second wife to Sambasiva Sivachariyar of Chennai Komaleeswaranpet at the age of 9, who is 15 years elder than her. She used to meditate at the open terrace after the work in Mutt. Her husband passed away due to decease, when she was 20. Then she moved to her brother Arunachalam’s house at Polur.

During her stay at Polur, she had the chance of getting blessings of  Nakshatra Gunambal, an yogini & Siddhar, of Nakshatra Hill,  Polur Vittoba Swamiji and Okiya siddhar, on the way to Thiruvannamalai and Adimudi siddhar. Adimudi Siddhar taught her, the ways to attain mukthi. Nakshatra Gunambal taught Anandamba, the Sri Chakra worship and Ashta Siddhis. In that She mastered the lakima, flying like a bird in the sky ( lakima - one of the ashta siddhis ).

She was forced to come back to Komaleeswaranpet along with his brother, for medical treatment to her brother Arunachalam. She continued her meditation and Sri chakra worship. After continuous meditation, she has got in to the bright light of spiritual power. She was then called as sakkarai Amma.  Most of the time, she used to laugh and behave like lunatic.

Dr Nanjunda Rao, who was attending Sakkarai Amma’s brother Arunachalam, came to know the spiritual power of  Sakkarai amma. He became her disciple and followed her spiritual path. Dr Nanjunda Rao took her to many temples, which includes Kashi, Thiruvannamalai etc. As per A Devaraja Mudaliar’s book of “Anu thinamum Ramanarudan”, Sakkarai Amma meet Ramana maharishi in the virupaksha Cave along with Dr Nanjunda Rao.

In 1901, on the way to Komaleeswaranpet, after worshipping Sri Marundeeswarar, at Thiruvanmiyur, Sakkarai Amma, indicated where her Samadhi to be established and further told that She will become popular after 100 years. Dr Nanjunda Rao purchased the land. After 10 days on 28^th February 1901, around 15.30 Hrs Sakkarai Amma attained Samadhi at Komaleeswaranpet. Her body was brought to this place and laid in this Jeeva Samadhi Temple. As per Sakkarai Amma’s words, the jeeva Samadhi was reconstructed in 2001, ie 100 years after She attained Samadhi and consecrated on 1^st February 2002, by Dr Nanjunda Rao’s  family member.

It was told that Kanchi Maha Periyava also did meditation, 5 days at this Jeeva Samadhi during January month 1948.

Thiru Vi Kalyanasundaram had written about Sri Sakkarai Amma and her Siddhu in his book “Ulloli-உள்ளொளி (The Inner Light )”

// சென்னைக் கோமளீசுவரன் பேட்டையில் ஓர் அம்மையார் இருந்தனர். அவர் காலஞ்சென்ற டாக்டர் நஞ்சுண்டராவின் குரு என்று உலகஞ் சொல்லும். அவ்வம்மையார் பறவையைப்போல வானத்தில் பறப்பர். ஒருமுறை யான் வாசித்த கல்லூரியின் மேல் மாடியில் பறந்துவந்து நின்றனர்.

மானுடம் பறக்கிறதெனில் உலகம் அதை எப்படி வியக்குமென்று சொல்ல வேண்டுவதில்லை. அக்காலத்தில் சென்னையில் வதிந்த விஞ்ஞானியர் பலர் சூழ்ந்து சூழ்ந்து அம்மையார் நிலையை ஆராய்வர். அப்பொழுது சென்னை மியூஸியத் தலைவராயிருந்த ஓர் ஐரோப்பியரால் பறவையார் நிலை பெரிதும் ஆராயப்பட்டது. அம்மையார் பறவை இனத்தில் சேர்ந்தவரென்றும், அவரிடம் பறவைக்குரிய கருவிகரண அமைப்புக்கள் சில உள்ளன என்றும், கூர்தல் (Evolution) அறப்படி அத்தகைப் பிறவி இயற்கையில் அமைதல் கூடும் என்றும் அவரால் விளக்கப்பட்டன. அவர் விளக்கம் மற்றவரால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படவில்லை. யான் 'தேசபக்தன்' ஆசிரியனாகியபோது டாக்டர் நஞ்சுண்டராவிடம் நெருங்கிப் பழகுதல் நேர்ந்தது. பறவையாரைப் பற்றி அவரை நான் விசாரித்தேன். அவர், 'அம்மையார் சித்தரினத்தில் சேர்ந்தவர்' என்று கூறினர். பறவை நாயகியார் நிலை மனோதத்துவத்துக்கு எட்டுவதா? உன்னிப் பாருங்கள்.//

The Visit to this Shri Mahaan Satguru Andhu Swamy Madam & Sri Prasanna Vinayagar Temple at Perambur was a part of “Shiva, Vishnu, Amman and Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples Visit” – in Aminjikarai and Perambur on 09^th October 2022. Even though this is a Mahaan Satguru Andhu Swamy’s madam, called in the name of Prasanna Vinayagar Temple..

Some of the Salient features of this temple are...

The Temple or Jeeva samadhi Temple is facing east. A Shiva Lingam installed on the Jeeva Samadhi, is on the left side after the entrance. A Bronze idol of Siddhar Andhu Swamigal is kept on the head side in a small sannidhi like structure. The Jeeva Samadhi is facing north. 

In praharam Durgai Amman, Shirdi Saibaba, Vallalar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Venkatesa Perumal, Prasanna Vinayagar, Bhuvaneswari Amman  and Navagrahas.

ARCHITECTURE

Stucco image of Vinayagar is on the top of the entrance to signify this temple is a Prasanna Vinayagar Temple. Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Sri Venkatesa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi and Sri Prasanna Vinayagar sannidhis are built in a straight line facing east. Eka thala vesara Vimanas are on the three sanctums.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

This Jeeva Samadhi with Prasanna Vinayagar Sannidhi are established by Former Honorary Magistrate Thavathiru Desikanandha Swamigal with fund received from many donors.

The Temple was functioning as a madam during Andhu Swamigal’s period.

He was born to Hindu father and mother after they prayed in Anthoniyar Church of Perambur. Since Swamigal was born after praying at Anthoniyar Church, named as Anthony.  During young age itself he used to go to school with vibhuti on his forehead. People used to surprise to a boy with Christian Name and wearing Hindu religion symbol. He was not interested in the material life. While his two younger brothers are studying well, he was in search of Gnanam. Then he was sent Singapore ( Sri Lanka..?) to work in Tea plantation. He was sent back to India after he falls in to sick. After returning to India there was a change in his life style and behaved like Gnanpithu which was mistakenly understood as lunatic by others. The Former Honorary Magistrate Thavathiru Desikanandha Swamigal ( latter he had become the disciple of Andhu Swamigal ), identified him correctly and made Swamigal to stay in the Prasanna Vinayagar Temple it self. Swamigal attained Jeeva Samadhi in 1931 around 4 o’ clock. Swamigal’s Pavala Vizha  ( 75 years ) was celebrated in 2006.  It is told that Swamigal had done many miracles during his life time and even after attaining jeeva Samadhi also.

Andhu Swamigal had done lot of miracles in his life and also doing even after his Jeeva Samadhi.

Sri-la-Sri Muthulingam Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi Temple / Muthulinga Eswarar Temple, ஸ்ரீ-ல-ஸ்ரீ முத்துலிங்கம் ஜீவா சமாதி டெம்பிள், Royapettah, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri-la-Sri Muthulinga Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi temple was  a part of Temples Visit in Periyamet area on 07^th May 2023. On the way to my residence from Periyamet, the traffic was diverted through this road. Utilising this had been to this Jeeva Samadhi temple.

The Samadhi temple is facing west with Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam and rishabam are in front of the temple. Veerabhadra and Nandhi Devar are on both sides of the entrance. In Koshatam, Nalvar and Dakshinamurthy. A Shiva Linga is installed on the jeeva Samadhi of Sri La Sri Muthukinga Swamigal. 

 

Vinayagar, Another Jeeva Samadhi, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar and nagars are in the praharam.

Sri Moonjikeswarar Temple / Moonjikeswarar Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi / Munjikesar Jeeva Samadhi,Thiruvalangadu, tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu

The Visit to this Sri Moonkikeswarar Temple at North mada street Thiruvalangadu was a part of  Tiruvallur Heritage walk organised by Celebrate Kanchi, under the leadership of Mr Vels Kumaran. About 16 Shiva and Vishnu temples  built during Pallava and Chozha Period, are covered in this 2 days Heritage walk on 22^nd & 23^rd April 2023.

Some of the salient features of this Siddhar temple are....

This Siddhar jeeva Samadhi is facing east  with a mukha mandapam on the south side.  The image / idol of Moonjikeswarar is in the sanctum sanctorum. A Vinayagar sannidhi is in the open mandapa in front of the sanctum sanctorum

ARCHITECTURE

The south side mandapam pillars has the bas-relief of Moonjikeswarar and the donors. The sanctum sanctorum is on  a upanam and a pada bandha adhistanam. No Koshtas are provided. The pilasters are of brahma kantha pilaster with kalasam, kudam plagai and poomottu pothyal. No vimanam is found on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The present structure may belongs to 200 to 300 years old and there is an inscriptions found in this temple. As per the inscription rhis temple is under the control of Sri Dharma Sivachariyar  Madam, at No 38, Kachaleeswarar agraharam street, Armenian Street, Chennai.

LEGENDS

As per the legend, the king of snakes karkotagan once spitted its venom on Shiva’s hand. Angered Shiva and cursed him to go to the earth and worship him to get rid of his curse. As per the order of Shiva, karkodagan came to Thiruvalangadu as Karkodaga Munivar, worshipped Shiva and Sunandha Munivar, who was in severe penance. Karkodagan has got relieved from the Curse after worshipping Sunandha Munivar. Due to severe penance, a type of grass called Moonji was grown on his head like hair. Hence Sunandha Munivar was called as Moonjikesar. He attained jeevasamadhi at Thiruvalangadu. 

It  is believed that worshipping Munjikesar at this Jeeva Samadhi, will get relieved from sarba, Rahu, ketu doshas, since Munjikesar relieved Karkodagan's curse.

Sri Kutty Andavar Temple / ஶ்ரீ குட்டி ஆண்டவர் கோயில், Pattalam, Choolai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Kutty Andavar  Temple was a part of “Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples, Shiva Temples, Kutty Andavar Temple and Amman Temples Visit" in Chetpet Aminjikarai & Choolai, on 18^th September 2022. The  visit to this temple was made after visiting Siddhar Sri-La-Sri Mouna Guruswamigal Samadhi temple at Tiruvottiyur. Since Swamigal stayed at this temple and worshiped Kutty Andavar before attaining Jeeva Samadhi, I too want to have  the Darshan of Kutty Andavar.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…

This temple is facing east with a short Deepa Sthambam. Elephant vahana is immediately after the entrance Gate. A peepal tree is grown before sanctum Sanctorum ( the roots Damages the total Temple ). A Small Shiva Linga and Rishabam are under the clutches of the peepal tree's root. Dwarapalakas are on both side of the entrance. Moolavar Ayyanar and his consorts Poorna and Pushkala are in sitting postures as individual murtis.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of a rectangular sanctum sanctorum with ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The complete temple was constructed with bricks. The roof granite slabs had fallen down in the ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. An Ekathala sala type vimanam is over the sanctum Sanctorum. An amman temple is built abutting on the north side wall of this temple, hence circumambulation of Kutty Andavar Temple alone is not possible.

HISTORY

The temple may be 200 to 300 years old. The 19^th Century siddhar, Mouna Guruswamigal, came to this place from Karnataka, used to stay in this temple or on the opposite side of the house thinnai. During his stay at this temple. Daily he used to go to Harbor area Rice merchants shops to get rice and moong dhal for food.
