Sri Moonjikeswarar Temple / Moonjikeswarar Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi / Munjikesar Jeeva Samadhi,Thiruvalangadu, tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu

The Visit to this Sri Moonkikeswarar Temple at North mada street Thiruvalangadu was a part of  Tiruvallur Heritage walk organised by Celebrate Kanchi, under the leadership of Mr Vels Kumaran. About 16 Shiva and Vishnu temples  built during Pallava and Chozha Period, are covered in this 2 days Heritage walk on 22nd & 23rd April 2023.

Some of the salient features of this Siddhar temple are....
This Siddhar jeeva Samadhi is facing east  with a mukha mandapam on the south side.  The image / idol of Moonjikeswarar is in the sanctum sanctorum. A Vinayagar sannidhi is in the open mandapa in front of the sanctum sanctorum

ARCHITECTURE
The south side mandapam pillars has the bas-relief of Moonjikeswarar and the donors. The sanctum sanctorum is on  a upanam and a pada bandha adhistanam. No Koshtas are provided. The pilasters are of brahma kantha pilaster with kalasam, kudam plagai and poomottu pothyal. No vimanam is found on the sanctum sanctorum.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The present structure may belongs to 200 to 300 years old and there is an inscriptions found in this temple. As per the inscription rhis temple is under the control of Sri Dharma Sivachariyar  Madam, at No 38, Kachaleeswarar agraharam street, Armenian Street, Chennai.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, the king of snakes karkotagan once spitted its venom on Shiva’s hand. Angered Shiva and cursed him to go to the earth and worship him to get rid of his curse. As per the order of Shiva, karkodagan came to Thiruvalangadu as Karkodaga Munivar, worshipped Shiva and Sunandha Munivar, who was in severe penance. Karkodagan has got relieved from the Curse after worshipping Sunandha Munivar. Due to severe penance, a type of grass called Moonji was grown on his head like hair. Hence Sunandha Munivar was called as Moonjikesar. He attained jeevasamadhi at Thiruvalangadu. 

It  is believed that worshipping Munjikesar at this Jeeva Samadhi, will get relieved from sarba, Rahu, ketu doshas, since Munjikesar relieved Karkodagan's curse. 

TEMPLE TIMINGS
Temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs to 16.30 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
Thiruvalangadu is about 5.3 KM from Tiruvalangadu Railway Station, 15 KM from Arakkonam,  20 KM from Thiruvallur, 40 KM from Kanchipuram and 70 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Tiruvalangadu.
