Sri Kothanda Ramar Temple / ஸ்ரீ கோதண்ட ராமர் கோயில், தொழுப்பேடு / Thozhupedu, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

The
visit to this Kothanda Ramar Temple at Thozhupedu was a part of Heritage Visit to the Temples, Thavvai,
Kotravai, Durgai, Hero Stone sculpture’s around Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai
District on 22nd August 2021. This temple may be 200 to 300 years
old with some unique features. Thanks to Logesh for his guidance, Babu mano and manoj, for taking me to this place.
Moolavar
: Sri Kothanda Ramar with Sita and
Lakshmana Urchavars : Sri Kothanda Ramar with Sita,
Lakshmana and Hanuman.
Some
of the salient features of this temple are….The
temple is facing east with a Garudathoon / Deepasthambham and an entrance arch.
Thiruman with Sangu / conch, Chakra are
on the top of the entrance. Balipeedam is after the entrance. Chakkarathalwar
with Yoga Narasimha and Hanuman sannidhis are after the balipeedam. Vinayagar
and Adikesava Perumal with Sridevi and Bhoodevi are on both sides of the
sanctum sanctorum.
The
sanctum sanctorum was built with bricks may be during recent years.
The mandapam joins with Hanuman sannidhi and Main Sannidhi was built with tiled
roof.
LEGENDS It is believed that worshiping Kothanda Ramar and
Sita with 3 lemons on 7 Saturdays will bring happiness in life, will excel in all arts, studies,
will get rid off from evil eyes, to be relieved from Chronic deceases, will remove
the obstacles in the marriage, Child boon, will get victory over the court
cases, will remove all doshas, will increase wealth, will reduce tension and
stress, will reduce anger, to get rid of unethical relationship, difference of
opinions with partners, will reduce negative thoughts and finally Lord Rama will speak to you.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart from regular poojas special poojas will be
conducted on Krishna Jayanthi, Rama Navami, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Saturdays, New
year days, and on all important days..
TEMPLE TIMINGSThe temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to
10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.
HOW TO REACHThe temple is 13 KM from Cheyyar, 44 KM from
Kanchipuram, 72 KM from Chengalpattu, 77 KM from Arakkonam 77 KM from
Thiruvannamalai ( District Head quarters ) and 119 KM from Chennai.Nearest Railway station is Kanchipuram and Junction
Arakkonam or Chengalpattu.

Pallava Period Shiva temple with Loose Sculptures near Sri Velanjeri Amman Temple, Eraiyur, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.
The
visit to this Shiva Temple in the midst of paddy fields, near Sri Velanjeri
Amman Temple at Eraiyur. was a part of
Heritage Visit to the Temples, Thavvai, Kotravai, Durgai, Hero Stone
sculpture’s around Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai District on 22nd
August 2021. Thanks to Logesh for his guidance, Babu mano and manoj, for taking me to this place.
The
name of the moolavar is not known. Moolavar is facing east on a Square
avudayar. A Nandi and a Vrutha pillar is in front of the newly constructed (
Yet to be completed ) brick temple. Chandikeswarar
Vinayagar and a Jyeshta Devi / Thavvai
and a damaged Bhairavar are out side the temple. The experts are of the opinion that the original temple may belongs to 9th to 10th Century Pallava period. The uniqueness of this temple is the
Vinayagar Sculpture.
Vinayagar…
The Vinayagar is with 4 hands holding Changu / Conch and Chakra against the
usual attributes of Pasam and Angusam.
Chandikeswarar.. Chandikeswarar is also seems to be
unique. Maguda is shown as Virisadai, mazhu is shown little different.
HOW TO REACH:This temple is about 60 meters from Eraiyur
village, 10.5 KM from Cheyyar, 65 KM from Kanchipuram, 71 KM from Chengalpattu,
73 KM from Arakkonam 77 KM from Thiruvannamalai ( District Head quarters ) and
116 KM from Chennai.Nearest Railway station is Kanchipuram and Junction
Arakkonam or Chengalpattu.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…The
temple is facing east with and entrance door. A stucco image of Hanuman
worshiping a Shiva Linga is above the entrance. A Deepa sthambam, balipeedam
and Nandi are after the entrance. Stucco
images of Adiyars, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Lord Shiva and
Parvati as Rishabaroodar, Ambal are on top of the East side wall. An opening is
provided to see moolavar on the east wall. Dwarapalakas are painted at the
entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is little big on a square avudayar.
In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. A
Vinayagar as a loose sculpture and urchavars are in the ardha mandapam.
In
prakaram Vinayagar is on the left side immediately after the entrance,
Saptamatrikas ( only a part ), Ayyanar, Nalvar, Sri Valli Devasena Arumugar,
Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Kotravai
Vinayagar, Murugan ( damaged ), Nagar as loose sculptures, Ambal Tripura
Sundari, Kotravai, Chandran, Chandikeswarar and Navagrahas.
ARCHITECTUREThe
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The entrance
to the ardha mandapam is from south side with a sobhana mandapam.
The
sanctum sanctorum is on a simple padabandha adhisthana. From adhisthana to
Prastaram is constructed with Stone ( painted ). A two tier stucco Vesara
Vimana is above the Bhoomi Desam. Stucco images of adhtadik palakas (..?) are in
the karnapathi. Images are also in the Vimana agarai. No images found in the valabi. HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONSThe
temple is believed to be built during Chozha’s period and the inscription
records that Lord Shiva was called as Valeeswarar.
Maha
Kumbhabhishekam and 1008 sangu abhishekam was conducted on 09th July
1989. As per this inscription this place was in North Arcot District and latter
merged with Thiruvannamalai District.
LEGENDSIt
is believed that Hanuman, to get relieved from Shiva abarth, installed Shiva
Linga at many places and this is also one of them.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONSApart
from Oru kala Pooja special poojas are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya, Aadi
month Fridays, Maha Shivaratri and Pradosham.

temple will be kept opened between 08.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to
19.00 hrs.
HOW TO REACHThis
place Anakkavur is about 3.7 KM from Cheyyar, 34.5 KM from Kanchipuram, 61 KM
from Chengalpattu, 64 KM from Arakkonam, 79 KM from Thiruvannamalai and 113 KM
from Chennai.Nearest
Railway station is Kanchipuram and Junction is Arakkonam or Chengalpattu ( more
or less both are same distance ).

Hero Stone / Navakandam / Arikandam / Veerakallu / வீரகல், at Sri Kangiamman Temple, Thiruvothur, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

visit to these Hero Stones at Kangiamman Temple was a part of Heritage Visit to the Temples, Thavvai,
Kotravai, Durgai, Hero Stone sculpture’s around Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai
District on 22nd August 2021. Thanks to Logesh for his guidance, Babu mano and Manoj.
NAVAKANDAM HERO STONEThere
are two Navakanda statues installed on the back side of the Kangiamman
Temple. One of the Navakanda statue is made out of Green stone. The hero stands straight and looking front. The Hero is shown
holding a sword in the right hand keeping down. The left hand holds the sword
and cutting his head. The hero wears ornaments in the ears and around the neck.
A Kireedam is shown on the head and big
mustache is also shown on his face. A Kattar is shown on his hip.
Since this hero is with a Kireedam and made out of special
Green stone, the hero must be Chieftain or a leader of a Group. Please note
that this temple is under the control of Mudaliars, The hero may belongs to
Kaikolar Padai. This sculpture is very much similar to 5 Hero stones found at Thirumalpur ( They also holds the swords
in left hand ) and are worshiped by the Mudaliar Community.
ARIKANDAM - HERO STONEThe
Other Hero stone is a arikandam. The hero cuts off his head with a sword holding in both hands. A big
mustache is shown on his face. The hero wears ornaments in his ears and over
neck. He also wears a channaveera. The legs are shown in marching / walking
position.
In
the front mandapam, these two Hero stone painting was drawn. In that the heroes
are on both sides of a Shiva Linga and a Vinayagar sannidhi. Since the original temple was dedicated to “kanakarai
Selvi” a Kotravai, Heroes used sacrifice
themselves in front of Kotravai to win over any battle / Wars. These Hero stones may also be connected to such
wars. The Painting may also signifies that self sacrifice in the form of Navakandam given at this temple.
