HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Alwars have sung pasurams on Maha Vishnu of this temple, the temple may belong to 07th to 9th century, Pallava period. It is believed that this temple is older than Srirangam. Later received contributions from the Chozhas and Vijayanagaras.

The Annual Report on South-Indian Epigraphy for the year 1901 (Madras Epigraphy Report - MER) contains a list of stone inscriptions, Sl. Numbers 283, 300, 301, and 303 are related to this temple. Based on the researchers, these inscriptions generally relate to the Pallava and Early Chola periods:

No. 283 of 1901: This inscription is dated to the 3rd regnal year of a king in the neighbourhood of Kanchi, mentioned in Epigraphia Indica (E.I.) Vol VI, p. 319, and is often cited alongside inscriptions of 9th-century kings. It is associated with Pallava-era records found in the Tamil region.

Aditya Chola I's 18th reign year (885 CE), an inscription records the details of land grants and resources allocated for temple maintenance and renovations/ reconstructions.

Rajaraja Chola I’s (985–1014 CE) reign inscription records the contributions, including donations for rituals and structural enhancements.

Kulothunga Chola III's (1178–1218 CE) reign inscription records the additional grants to the temple.

The Rajagopuram was built during the Vijayanagara period.

ARE 1901, Sl. Nos. 301 and 303, both are referenced together regarding temple administration and social life during the late Pallava/Early Chola period.

ARE 1901, Sl No. 303 of 1901, the inscription of "Tellarrerinda Nandippottaraiyar" (Nandivarman III), dated to his 18th year. It registers a tax-free trade license granted to merchants, with the reading of the inscription referring to them as "Arugai Vanigar". In particular, this is a key inscription highlighting trade regulations in the Tondaimandalam region.

ARE 1901, Sl No. 300, Part of the same collection of inscriptions from the Kanchi/North Arcot region, often grouped with other Nandivarman III or Nripatunga records detailing trade or temple offerings in 9th-century South India.

Contextual Details:
These records are often cited in "Administration and Social Life under the Pallavas" to describe village assemblies, weights and measures (like Narayanali and Videlvidugu Ulakku), and the "adhyakipadvadasa-devakarmibhyah" (twelve superintendents of temple affairs).

Dwajasthambam was installed on 16th March 2005.

LEGENDS
Upamanyu and the Sage Parasara had the darshan of Appukudatham of this temple.

As per the legend, once the king Uparisaravasu went to the forest for hunting. In the process of hunting, the King killed a Brahmin inadvertently, thinking like an elephant. By killing the Brahmin, the king incurred the brahmahathi dosha. To get rid of the dosha, Durvasa Maharishi advised the king to serve annadhanam to one lakh people on Karthigai month Kaisika Ekadasi day. It is believed that Maha Vishnu also ate the annadhanam. Even after consuming the food of a lakh people, his hunger was not reduced. So, he asked the king to serve him more appam. The king served a pot of appam to Maha Vishnu. Maha Vishnu, satisfied with the annadhanam, blessed the king and relieved him from the Brahmahatyadosha.  As a mark of this, appam is offered as a naivedyam during the evening pooja.
