LEGENDS
This
legend is associated with one of the thiruvilayadal of Shiva. In the
competition, initiated by Narada, between Vinayagar and Murugan, whoever comes
first after circumambulating this universe will get the rare Mango. Murugan
immediately started on his vahana, the peacock, to circle the universe. Vinayagar
circumambulated Shiva and Parvati, his father and mother, considering them his universe, which was agreed by Shiva and Narada, and got the mango.
Disappointed, Murugan left Mount Kailash and stands as Dhandayuthapani, holding
a dhantam on the hills and blessing his devotees.
