Hero Stone - Pulikuthipattan Kal / புலி குத்திப்பட்டான் கல், Palapalayam, near Gobichettipalayam, Erode District, TamilNadu.

Mr Devan who belongs to Vettuvar Community, working with BSNL  told me about this Pulikuthi Kal temple  at Palappalayam near Gobichettipalayam ( The same person looks after the Kavindapadi Arulmigu Pulikuthi Swamy Tempe). Landed Palappalayam bus stop on the way to Erode  from Gobichettipalayam on 8th December 2018 around 18.00 hrs. When I enquired the local people, and one man guided me to this temple which is on the old Palappalayam Village before a School.  The temple looked like a cave with a dim light. I could figure out the Pulkuthi Nadukal, standing inside the square sanctum, about 1.5 feet below the out side ground level. The temple was built with a village style pyramid shaped vimana.  Once there was a front mandapa and now the stones with reliefs of snake, man. Fish are scattered around the temple.

The Pulikuthi pattan Kal is very simple. The tiger and the hero are carved on a stone slab. The hero is shown in standing position, holding a spear in both hands. Unlike other pulikuthi Hero stones there is a distance maintained between the  Hero and the tiger which also stands on two legs. The hero is wearing a half dress below the hip. Experts are of the opinion that this Pulikuthi pattan ndu kal  may belongs to 18th to 19th Century.

Hero Stone / Veerakallu / Pulikuthukal / புலிகுத்தி பட்டான் கல் at Ingur, near Perundurai and Chennimalai, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

This loose sculpture found in the village was brought to this Sri Thampiratti Amman Temple and installed along with the statues of Donors of this temple and warrior statues in a row. This Sri Thampiratti Amman, a Kuladheivam to Inchan Kulam, a sub sect of Gounder Community in Erode District.

This Pulikuthi Kal is different from the other hero stones. Even-though it was made on a stone slab the outer is cleanly cut and looks like a statue. The hero is killing the tiger with a sword on the right hand and the left hand is shown near the neck of the tiger. A dress below the hip is also shown with out any ornamental work. The hero is wearing a pathra kundala and ornaments on his neck. Experts of the opinion that this Pulikuthi Nadukal may belongs to 18th to 19th Century.

Pulikuthikal / புலி குத்திப்பட்டான் கல், worshiped as Pulikurthi Swamy /அருள்மிகு புலிகுத்தி சுவாமி, Kavindapadi, near Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

It was learnt that there is a Pulikuthi kal  worshiped as Vediappan near Kavindapadi Bus Stand. When  I, inquired near the bus stand, the people are not aware of that, since Hero stones are worshiped as Vediappan Tiruvannamalai & Chengam area.  Instead they asked me the temple belongs to which caste?.  When I told that it belongs to Vettuvar, a medical Shop owner near the bus stand came to my rescue and guided me to this temple. Yes this was the one which I am looking for.

The House like a structure was built during the recent years with a grill gate.  One Mr Devan ( 9489942703 )who belongs to Vettuva Gounder community, working for BSNL is looking after the temple. He came personally and opened the gate. The original  structure above the Pulikuthi kal was disturbed during the construction of this House like structure. Mr Devan told that, during the excavation  for the foundation, they had found the remains ( Bones and Teeth ) of the Hero, Tiger and the dog. They call the Hero as Matheswaran and the temple as Pulikuthi Swamy Temple.  When the pooja was conducted through Priest and Village Poojari ( Pandaram ), the hero came on a person ( Arul vakku ) and told a simple pooja is enough. Special poojas are conducted on Aadi month no moon day and Panguni Ugathi  day. 1118 thilaks are applied on the pulikuthi kal and very difficult to find the details of the Pulikuthikal.

In the Pulikuthi kal, the Tiger is shown very big than the hero. The tiger is in standing position keeping it's front legs on the hero. While the hero is killing the Tiger with a spear holding with two hands, his dog is biting the Tiger. The Hero is wearing a dress below the hip and a katar is also shown on his hip.

Pulikuthi pattan Kal / புலிகுத்திபட்டான் கல் / Hero Stone, Perunthalaiyur / Perundalaiyur, near Kavindapadi, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

The present fields of Kongu region from western ghats are once  a thick forest till 18th century.  The Pulikuthi  hero stones are found in many places till Kangeyam area. During my recent visit to my native place,  had seen such Pulikuthi hero stones in three places.  Unlike Chengam Nadukarkal ( worshiped as Vediappan ), these hero stones are not given with a common name and also importance was not given.  This may be due to the real story of these Pulikuthi Heros are not passed on to their younger generations. These Pulikuthi hero stones in Kongu region are  worshiped  by  a section of Vettuva Gounders.  

PULIKUTHI PATTAN KAL ( புலிகுத்திபட்டான் கல் ) – PERUNTHALAIYUR / PERUNDALAIYUR.
This  Pulikuthi Pattan  Hero & Sati stone is in a village Perundalaiyur on the banks of river Bhavani close to western ghats. This has the latter period  Tamil inscriptions.  The hero’s wife, who undertook sati after the hero’s death is also shown. The Hero is killing the tiger with sword and knife on both hands. The sword pierced  through the tiger and came out of the body. The hero and his wife are shown a half dress below the hip with frills. The Hero’s wife is shown with raised hands and holding lemon (  blessing ) on her right hand. ( the lemon signifies the threatening the evil spirit).

As per the inscription the Hero Thondaiman Thimmaiyan Pandi  killed the tiger in the year Thanthubi, Panguni month. Based on the  inscription the experts of the opinion, that this “Pulikuthi Pattan Kal“ may belongs to 19th Century.

Saptha Kannis, Sati Stone and Enthirakal at Vayalakkavoor and Angambakkam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. .

SAPTHA KANNIYARS AT VAYALAKKAVOOR
Happened to visit Vayalakkavoor, a Village near Walajabad in connection with Ahimsa Walk organized by the Tamil Jains on 02nd  December 2018. This Saptha kannis temple is on the banks of the river Cheyyar and about 100 meters from the newly constructed Mahaveer Tirthankara temple. The temple is covered with wall on all the 4 sides with a gate on the east, without roof.  The  stucco image of Amman is in sitting posture, on a pedestal. While the upper hands holds  mazhu and pasam, the lower hands are in abhaya and varada hastham. Below the Amman  statue is the saptha Kanniyar panel. In the Saptha kannis panel a woman is sitting on the extreme left and an elephant on the right.  The Saptha Kannis are shown with two hands. One hand is hanging and the other holds, a thandam or a flower ? In front of the temple a Narasimhar(?) idol with a knife holding in the right hand. The balipeedam is in front. On both sides are 2 horses and two elephants. This panel seems to be different from the commonly available saptha kannis panels.









SATI STONE AT ANGAMPAKKAM
On the way to Chennai from Vayalakkavoor, visited Angampakkam to see a Tirthankara kept in a Hanuman Temple.  On the left side of the temple there is Sati stone. The hero is holding a sword on his right hand ( down) and  what is there in the left hand is not known. The hero’s wife  holding a pot in her right hand and what she is holding the left hand is also not known.



ENTHIRAKAL AT ANGAMPAKKAM
The enthiram with soolam  are inscribed on a stone and is erected on the right side of the temple. This enthirakal is called in different names in different Villages. The Villagers believes that, any  deceases like kalara, Ammai/ Chickenpox/ smallpox, etc., will not enter in to the village when it is  erected at the beginning of the village.

Sri Vacheeswarar Temple, Vayalakkavoor, Tirumukkudal, near Walajabad, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

Had been to Vayalakkavoor in connection with the Tamil Jains Ahimsa Walk. After the important event of installation of Mahavir image in a newly built small temple, ventured in to the village for any other old temples or Heritage sites. The Villagers  guided me to this old Shiva temple.

Consort      : Sri Ezhavar kuzhali Amman

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple is facing east with a 2 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, Rishabam are in front of Mukha mandapam.  Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai are in the deva koshtam.

In the inner prakaram sannadhi for Somaskandar, Sridevi, Bhudevi sametha Perumal, Sri Kasi Viswanathar & Visalakshi, Saraswathy, Annapoorani, Agathiyar, Subramaniyar, GajaValli ( on the wall ) and Chandikeswarar. In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Nagars and Navagrahas.  Ambal Sri Ezhava Kuzhali Amman is in the mukha mandapam. Lakshmi Hayagreevar, Mahaganapathy,  Dhandapani and Iyappan are also in the mukha mandapam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of a sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam, maha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The sanctum was built in simple padabandha adhisthana with three face kumuda. A combination of nagara and vesara vimana is on the sanctum. 


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
12th to 13th Century Rajaraja Chozha-II, SadayaVarman Sundarapandiyan-I and Kopperunchingan inscriptions  are found on the sanctum walls. The inscriptions speaks about the donation made to the temple for burning of perpetual lamp. The moolavar’s name is mentioned as Sri Varanavatheechuramudayar, Sri Varanavasichuramudayar. ( The inscriptions are painted and with out proper lighting couldn’t get more details on the inscriptions - Thanks to Vicky Kannan for providing me the above details).

Sadaiyavarman Sundara Pandya-I’s 15th regnal Year (1265 CE ) inscription records the gift of ten kasu for burning a twilight lamp in the temple of Sri Varanadisvaramudaiya Nayanar in Vayalakkavur by an individual of Sembur; it was received by the Sivabrahmanas of the temple who accepted to burn this lamp.
முதலாம் சுந்தர பாண்டியனின் 15 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு (1265 CE ) கல்வெட்டு, வயலைக்காவூரில் உள்ள ஸ்ரீவாரணாதீசுவரமுடைய நாயனார் கோயிலில் சந்தி விளக்கு ஒன்று எரிப்பதற்குச் செம்பூரைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் அளித்த பத்து காசுகளை, இக்கோயிலில் காணி உடைய சிவபிராமணர்கள் சிலர் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு விளக்கு எரிக்கச் சம்மதித்த செய்தி கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Rajarajachola –II’s 22nd regnal Year ( 1168 CE ) inscription records  the gift a madai (gold coin) for burning a twilight lamp in the temple of Sri Varanadisvaramudaiya nayanar by Arumbakkilan Kuttadumdevan of this village and the Sivabrahmanas of the temple received and accepted to burn this lamp. In continuation... Vijaya Ganda Gopalan’s 24th regnal year inscription also inscribed. The inscription records another gift was made by Sipada nadalvan for burning a lamp in this temple.
இரண்டாம் ராஜராஜ சோழனின் 22 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 1168 CE ) கல்வெட்டு வயலைக்காவூர் சி வாரணாதீஸ்வரமுடைய நாயனார் கோயிலில் சந்தி விளக்கு ஒன்று எரிப்பதற்கு இவ்வூர் அரும்பாக்கிழான் கூத்தாடும் தேவன் என்பவர் கொடையாக அளித்த மாடை ஒன்றை இக்கோயிலைச் சேர்ந்த சிவபிராமணர் இருவர் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு விளக்கெரிக்க சம்மதித்தனர்.
அதே கல்வெட்டில் விஜயகண்ட கோபாலனின் 24-ம் ஆட்சியாண்டில் சந்திவிளக்கு ஒன்று எரிப்பதற்கு இவ்வூரில் உள்ள பள்ளிகளில் சீபாத நாடாழ்வான் மகன் செல்வபிள்ளை என்பவர் கொடையளித்த ஒருமாடையை சிவபிராமணர்கள் சிலர் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு விளக்கெரிக்கச் சம்மதித்த செய்தியும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Rajaraja –II’s 27th regnal year ( 1173 CE ) inscription records the endowment of burning a sandhi lamp by Kannanthai Kaavithi Kaariyazhvan. For the same Ganda Gopalan nemadai kasu was given and the same was received by the Temple’s Siva Brahmins.
வயலைக்காவூர் ஸ்ரீவாரணாதீசுவரர் கோயில் இறைவனுக்கு சந்தி விளக்கு ஒன்று எரிப்பதற்கு இவ்வூர்க் கண்ணந்தைக் காவிதி காரியாழ்வான் என்பவர் உபயமாக அளித்த கண்ட கோபாலன் புதுமாடை ஒன்றை, இக்கோயில் சிவபிராமணர்கள் சிலர் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு விளக்கெரிக்க சம்மதித்து கையெழுத்திட்டுக் கொடுத்த செய்தி கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Rajaraja –II’s 27th regnal year ( 1173 CE ) inscription records that, construction of the temple with stone and establishment of Devakoshta murtis / images by Thirukalathi Udaiyan Varanasi udaiyan Kalapalan ( may be ). Also gifted one madai kasu for burning of sandhhi lamp for his daughter Aludai Nachi and the same was received by Sivabrahmanars, agreed and signed.
இரண்டாம் இராஜராஜனின் 27ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 1173 CE ) கல்வெட்டு கற்றளி செய்வித்துக் கோட்டத்தில் தேவர்களையும் ( இறை உருவங்கள் ) எழுந்தருளுவித்தவர் திருக்காளத்தி உடையான் வாரணாசி உடையான் களப்பாளன் என்பவராக இருத்தல் வேண்டும். இவர் தன் மகள் ஆளுடை நாச்சிக்காக ஒரு சந்திவிளக்கு இக்கோயிலில் எரிப்பதற்குக் கண்டகோபாலன் புதுமாடை ஒன்றை அளித்தார். இக்காசைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்ட அக்கோயில் சிவபிராமணர்கள் விளக்கெரிக்கச் சம்மதித்த செய்தியும் கையெழுத்திட் டுள்ளமையும் தெரியவருகிறது.

Komburudaiyar Aditadevar alias Villavarayar. For the same a new Ganda Gopalan madai kasu was given and the same was received by the Siva Brahmanars.

Pallava King Koperunjingan’s 16th regnal year ( 1259 CE ) inscription records the endowment of burning a Sandhi lamp by Iraiyur Palakannan Thzhuva Kuzhainthan Thiruveezhimizhalai Udaiyan. For the same one madai kasu was gifted to the temple and the same was received by the Siva Brahmins and agreed to carryout.
பல்லவ மன்னர் கோப்பெருஞ்சிங்கனின் 16 ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 1259 CE ) கல்வெட்டு வயலைக்காவூர் வாரணவாசிசுரமுடையார் கோயிலில் சந்தி விளக்கு ஒன்று எரிப்பதற்கு இரையூர் பலகண்ணன் தழுவக் குழைந்தான் திருவீழிமிழலை உடையான் என்பவர் கொடையளித்த ஒரு மாடையைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு இக்கோயில் சிவபிராமணர்கள் விளக்கெரிக்கச் சம்மதித்த செய்தி கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.
பிற கல்வெட்டுகளில் வாரணாதீசுவரமுடையார். என்ற கோயில் பெயர் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்க, இக்கல்வெட்டில் மட்டும் வாரணவாசிசுரமுடையார் -என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இரண்டாம் இராஜராஜனின் 27ஆம் ஆட்சியாண்டு ( 1173 CE ) கல்வெட்டு, வயலைக்காவூர் வாரணவாதிசுரமுடையார் கோயிலில் சந்திவிளக்கு எரிப்பதற்கு மூன்று பேர் தனித்தனியாக அளித்த மூன்று கண்டகோபாலன் மாடைகளைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்ட இக்கோயில் சிவபிராமணர்கள் விளக்கெரிக்க சம்மதித்துக் கையெழுத்திட்டுள்ள செய்தி காணப்படுகிறது.

A Private bus passes through this village from Kanchipuram to Thandalam.
The Village Vayalakkavoor is about 36 KM from Kanchipuram, 23 KM from Walajabad and the walajabad is the nearest Railway station.

Mahavira Tirthankara, installation at Vayalakkavoor, Thirumukkudal and Tirthankara at Angambakkam near Walajabad, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

02, December 2018.
This Mahavira Tirthankara  a loose sculpture  was unearthed in the Cheyyar river bed at Vayalakkavoor Village under Uthiramerur Panchayat Union, about two years back was kept under a lemon tree. The locals  worshiped this Mahavir sculpture as Buddha. It was told that for getting rain they used to do abhishek with water. This sculptures was identified as Tirthankara by Mr Jeevakumar, who  dedicated  most part of his spare time in identifying such sculptures on the banks of river Cheyyar.


A small jinalaya was built with stone  through the donation received from Mr Amit Jain, who worked previously at Chennai and now at Bengaluru. A simple consecration  function was organised  by the Ahimsa Walk Group on 2nd December 2018, in which, Sri Lakshmi Sena Bhattaraka Bhattacharya Swamiji  of Mel Sithamur declared open the inscription. The Abhishekam and Aarathi was also performed by the devotees. Sri 108 KKSD Jain Trust, Children of Ponnur performed the band musical concert. A land measuring 100 sqft was donated by the Villager Mr Sundaram for the construction of this stone Jinalaya.

About Mahavira Tirthankara ... The  top portion of the sculpture was found in broken. The whisk bearer on the left alone is visible. Jwala Prabai can be seen on the back of Tirthankara's head. Tirthankara image was reworked with symbol lion. It was told that the Tirthankara may belongs to 10th to 11th Century AD.

TIRTHANKARA OF ANGAMBAKKAM
On the way to Chennai had been to Angambakkam, on the banks of river Palar. A loose Tirthankara sculpture was  kept in an Anjaneyar Temple. The Tirthankara is sitting on a Simhasanam. Whisk bearers are shown near the head. The prabhai and ashoka leaves are also shown.  Previously this sculptures was under a peepal tree. The sculptures was broken in two pieces due to fall of a branch of the tree, the same was reworked. Now the Tirthankara is waiting  a for a shelter.
