Sri Sundareswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ சுந்தரேஸ்வரர் கோயில், நங்கவரம், Nangavaram, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this temple was a part of “Trichy Heritage Walk” organised by “Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே- Group”, to the Historical Chozha period temples, in and around Trichy aka Tiruchirappalli, scheduled on 20th & 21st March 2021. Even after the damages done by the Muslim invaders, they still stands majestically with 1000 and odd years old history, Heritage and culture values. Even-though they were contributed by the Pallava, Chozha, Pandya, Vijayanagara Kings and the present Nattukottai Nagarathars, they are less popular.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The Temple is facing east with an entrance arch. The stucco images of Lord Shiva with Parvati as Rishabroodar, on both sides are Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Parvati and Lord Shiva on their respective vahanas. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the Entrance arch. In Koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu.  

In the prakaram Agandeswarar ( The experts are of the opinion this must be a half buried Dwarapalaka ) – a Theenda Thirumeni, Saptamatrikas, Bhairavar, Chandikeswarar, Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Arumugar, Arunagirinathar, Thavvai / Jyeshta Devi with Mandhan and Manthi, Durga, Navagrahas, Maha Ganapathy and Dhandapani.  

Ambal is in a separate temple on the North east of temple complex facing South. Ambal is in standing posture.





ARCHITECTURE
The Temple complex consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. The dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum with jada magudam, pathra kundalam, Sarapalli, yagnopaveetha and with protruding side teeth. They were believed to be of early Chozha period. The adhisthana is of simple padabandha adhisthana with three patta kumuda. A Two tier Vesara Vimana is over the Sanctum. Maha nasis are on the Sikaram on all four Cardinal directions. Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the griva koshtam.

The temple was constructed with stone from Adhisthana to Prastaram. Vishnukantha pilasters with regular features of Kalasam, kumbha, palakai etc are on the sanctum walls. The kapotha is with Nasikoodu and Chandramandalam. Bhuta ganas are in the valabi. Viyala vari / Yazhi vari is in the Bhoomi Desam
    



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
There were 13 inscriptions recorded from this temple. The earliest inscription belongs to Arinjaya Chozha. The other inscriptions belongs to, Uthama Chozha, Rajendran-I, Rajathirajan-I, Rajathirajan-II, Vikrama Chozha, Sundara Pandyan and 20th Century. Hence it is believed that this temple belongs to 10th Century. As per the inscription this place was called as Maravaneri and Lord Shiva was called as Maravaneeswarar. This place was also called as Nangai Brahmadeyam alias Arinjigai Chathurvedimangalam.

An inscription records the endowment of celebrating the birth day with special poojas of Irukkuvelir descendants, Bhuthiparantaka’s Queen PeralNagai, for which 1080 kalanju gold was gifted to the temple. To equate this gift, a 3.5 veli land was exempted from the Tax and treated as devathanam by the Sabha.

The Village Sabha increased the musical instruments from 2 to 4 and manpower / musicians also increased suitably. For the same a land was gifted for their livelihood.

Another inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp with ghee by a Merchant called Maravaneri Udayan. For which 33 kasu was gifted.    

Sundareswarar Temple thirupani was done at a cost of Rs 10000, by N N Ramanatha Iyer in the year Kaliyugathi 5045 and Tamil Year Subanu ( 1933- 34 )

Sri Komalambigai Temple thirupani was carried out between 1939 – 1940 at a cost of Rs 5000 by Nangavaram Periya Pannai N A Renganatha Iyer.

In the Year 1952 – 53, north side of the compound wall near Sri Subramaniyar sannidhi, was reconstructed at a cost of Rs 3500 by N R Sundaraja Iyer and and N N Ramanatha Iyer.

The temple’s arch thirupani was done at a cost of Rs 1000, in the year Thurmukhi – Hevilambi, ( 1956 – 57 ), by Nangavaram Periya Pannai N N Ramanatha Iyer.

Sri Sundareswarar Sanctum Sanctorum, Vimanam, Artha mandapam, Maha mandapam thirupani / maintenance and replacement of terrace tiles was carried out between 2002 – 2005 at a cost of 275000 by Nangavaram Chinna Pannaiyar N L Durai Iyer’s family.   

The entrance arch salakara Panchamoorthy are in stucco, Nandhikeswarar Mandapam, Vimana Thirupani was done by N S Rajagopalan, daughter Mrs Radhamani & Muthu Krishnan in memory of their father, Nangavaram Periya Pannaiyar, N R Sundararaja Iyer at a cost of 1.25 Lakhs in the year 2002 ( started )-05 ( Completed ). Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 20th June 2005.  

LEGENDS
As per the legend a female child was born with human body and Fox’s / Jackal face ( Horse face ), to a Chozha King. He went to many temples to change to human face. When he came to this place Nangavaram, Lord Shiva came in his dream and advised him to bring the Shiva Linga from Kasi and worship him, which is being worshiped by a Maharishi. The King ordered his men to bring the Shiva Linga. His men brought the Shiva Linga and a temple was built by the Chozha King. The Chozha King worshiped this Lord Shiva and his daughter’s Fox’s face has turned to Human face. Hence this place was called as “Nangaivaram”, which has got corrupted to the present name of Nangavaram.

In the mean time The Maharishi Akandeswara came to know through Lord Shiva that the Shiva linga worshiped by him is at this place. It was dusk when he reached this place and the temple was also closed. So he jumped the compound and stuck up in the mud and stayed here itself. Hence he is worshiped as Akanda Eswarar and treated as Theenda thirumeni. For applying sandal paste, it was told that the paste was thrown from a distance. All the poojas conducted to Lord Shiva is also conducted to this Aganda eswarar.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted Thai Poosam in the month Thai ( Jan – feb ), Vaikasi Visakam in the month Vaikasi ( May – June ), Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month  ( August – Sept), Annabhishekam & Skanda Sashti ( 6 days ) in the month Aippasi ( October – November ), Deepavali in the month Oct,  Karthigai Somavaram 108 Sangu abhishekam in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), Panguni Uthiram in the month Panguni ( March – April ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ) and monthly pradosham.

Eri / Reservoir irrigation inscription / நீர் பாசன ஏரிக்கல்வெட்டு on a boulder on the banks of an Eri at Brahmadesam, in Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

This inscription belongs to 8th Century inscribed on a boulder on the banks of an Eri / reservoir. As per the inscription this eri was excavated by “Serukkali Nadalvar” in Serukkali Nadu. The same was called as Vadakarai Nadu latter. This eri / reservoir was called as Nattan Eri, banks are called as “Chirai” and outflow Mathagu was called “Vai”. One of the specialty of this inscription is, it starts with Sri as Pallava Grantha “Sri” and the head is mentioned in colloquial slang

As per the experts the name may signifies as a God Lord Shiva or the king. The Last sentence or “Ompadai Kilavi” of the inscription states that the Eri benefits can only enjoyed by their decedents like sons, their sons, grand children. If any body used other than their decedents, they will not have any children. If anybody takes care, they will hold that person’s legs on their head.

கல்வெட்டு செய்தி:
செருக்காலி நாடாள்வாரால் இந்த ஏரி உருவாக்கப்பட்டு நட்டன் ஏரி என அழைக்கப்பட்டது. ஏரியின் கரை சிறை எனவும், நீர் வெளியேறும் மதகு வாய் எனவும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இந்த ஏரியின் பயனை நாடாளரின் வழியினராகிய மக்கள் மக்கள், பேர பேரர் அல்லாமல் வேறு யாராவது அனுபவித்தால் அவர்கள் வம்சம் அற்றுப் போவார்கள். மேலும் ஏரியைப் பாதுகாத்தவர் அடி ( கால் ) என் தலை மேலுது என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பவானி அருகே 1,200 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முந்தைய ஏரிகல்வெட்டில் தகவல். பவானி அருகே 1,200 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முந்தைய ஏரி இருந்தற்கான சான்று கல்வெட்டு ஆய்வில் தெரியவந்துள்ளது.

ஈரோடு மாவட்டம், பவானி அருகே பிரம்மதேசம் கிராமத்தில் கல்லாம்பாறை பகுதியில் உள்ள ஓடைக்கு அருகில் கி.பி. 8ஆம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சோ்ந்த ஏரி இருந்தது கல்வெட்டு மூலமாகக் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கல்வெட்டு ஆய்வாளா்கள் புலவா் செ.ராசு, சக்திபிரகாஷ், வேலுதரன் ஆகியோரால் இந்தக் கல்வெட்டு தொடா்பாக ஆய்வு நடத்தினா். அப்போது, இது கொங்கு மண்டலத்தின் மிகவும் பழமையான ஏரி என்பது தெரியவந்தது.

இதுகுறித்து, புலவா் செ.ராசு கூறியதாவது:
கல்வெட்டில் செருக்கலி நாடாளரால் பணிக்கப்பட்டது என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதாவது ஏரி இருந்த பகுதி செருக்கலிநாடு என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது. பின்னா், வடகரை நாடு என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த நாட்டை நிர்வாகம் செய்தவா்கள் நாடாளா் எனப்பட்டனா். ஊரை ஆண்டவா் ஊராளி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டதைப் போல, நாட்டை ஆண்டவா் நாடாளா் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டனா். அதுவே பிற்காலத்தில் நாட்டாளார் எனப்பட்டனா். இந்த நாடாளரால் ஏரி உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த ஏரி நட்டன் ஏரி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு வந்தது கல்வெட்டின் மூலமாக தெரியவந்தது. ஏரியின் கரை சிறை என்றும், ஏரியின் நீா்வெளியேறும் மதகு வாய் என்றும் கூறப்பட்டது. நட்டன் என்பது சிவபெருமான் பெயா் அல்லது தனிப்பட்ட தலைவன் பெயராக இருக்கலாம் என்று கருதப்படுகிறது.

இந்த ஏரியின் பயனை நாடாளரின் வழியினராகிய மக்கள் மக்கள், பேரா் பேரா் அல்லாமல், வேறு யாராவது அனுபவித்தால் அவா்கள் வம்சம் அற்றுப்போவார்கள். அதாவது நாடாளரின் வம்சத்தினா் அனுபவித்ததாகக் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும், பேச்சு ஒலியைப்போல தலை என்பதற்கு தலைய் என்று கல்வெட்டில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதாவது ஏரியைப் பாதுகாத்தவா், அடி (கால்) எங்கள் தலைமேலது என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கல்வெட்டின் தொடக்கத்தில் பல்லவா் கிரந்த எழுத்தான ஸ்ரீ என்று பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தொன்மையான தமிழ் எழுத்துகள் சிலவற்றில் தமிழ் பிராமி தாக்கமும், சில எழுத்துகளில் வட்டெழுத்தின் சாயலும் உள்ளன. இதே காலத்தைச் சோ்ந்த ஸ்ரீ சோழிக அரையன் அகணிதன் குளம் கரூா் மாவட்டம், வெள்ளியணை என்ற ஊரில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, பிற்காலத்தில் 8 ஆறுகளில் 90 அணைகள் கட்டி நீா்ப்பாசன வசதி பெருக்கிய கொங்கு மக்களின் தொடக்க முயற்சியை இது காட்டுகிறது. இதன் விவரம் ஈரோடு மாவட்ட நிர்வாகத்த்துக்கும், தொல்லியல் துறைக்கும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வரலாற்று சிறப்பு மிக்க தொன்மையான இந்தக் கல்வெட்டைப் பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.

Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ பசுபதீஸ்வரர் கோயில், அல்லூர் / Allur Nakkan Koil, Allur, Trichy, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this temple was a part of “Trichy Heritage Walk” organised by “Yaaooyakay – யாஊயாகே- Group”, to the Historical Chozha period temples, in and around Trichy aka Tiruchirappalli, scheduled on 20th & 21st March 2021. Even-though they were contributed by the Pallava, Chozha, Pandya, Vijayanagara Kings and the present Nattukottai Nagarathars, they are less popular. This place Allur is on the banks of river Kaveri. This temple is also called as “Allur Nakkan Koil”.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with out any Rajagopuram or entrance arch. A Stucco image of Lord Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar is above the entrance of the Temple. Moolavar Shiva Linga is on a circular avudayar in the sanctum Sanctorum. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum.

Only Dakshinamurthy is in the Koshtam. The original Chozha period Dakshinamurthy was found brokened and dumped near the koshtam. A mandapa is extended in front of Dakshinamurthy. The other Koshta Murtis and Parivara Murtis  are kept in the artha mandapam for safety reasons. In artha mandapam Pichadanar, Bhairavar, Murugan, Suriyan, Vinayagar and Rishabam. Ambal sannadhi is in the artha mandapam facing South. Ambal is in samabanga standing posture  with abhaya  & Varada hastam.  

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and artha mandapam. An Ekathala thala Vesara Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. The sanctum sanctorum is on a simple padabandha adhisthana with threepatta kumuda. The Vimana was built with stone up to prastaram and the Sikaram / super structure was constructed with bricks. The Sikaram has Mahanasis on the 4 directions and alpa nasis in between. The greevam has the koshtas with stucco images Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu Brahma and Ashtadikpalakas.    

The sanctum walls are supported by the Pilasters ( Brahma kanda ) and the same pilasters also forms the Koshtas. The makara thorana has no special features.  The Brahmakanda pilasters has the components of malaikattu, kalasa, tadi, kumbha, pali, palaka and veerakandam. The thala Rishabas are look cute. The prastaram is of kapota style with nasikood and Valabi. Bhuta ganas are in the valabi. Yazhivari / vyazhavari is in the Bhoomidesam.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscriptions, the temple belongs to early 10th Century CE.  There are 15 inscriptions recorded from this temple. Of which 6 belongs to Parantaka Chozha-I, with his meikeerthi/ Title as Madurai konda Koparakesari ( 17th, 18th, 37th, 40th and 41st reign years ).  Sundara Chozha alias Mathurantaka Chozha’s inscription starts with his meikeerthi as “Maduraikonda Rajakesari”. One inscription belongs to Pandya King Kulasekara Pandya and the rest 3 are Parakesari inscriptions and 4 are Rajakesari inscriptions.

As per the inscriptions this place was called as Allur under Woraiyur Kootram and the temple was called as Nakkarkoil and Lord Shiva was called as “Nakkarkoil Parameswara”. Maravarman Kulasekara Pandiya’s 24th reign year inscription mentions Lord Shiva as “Nakkeeswaramaudaya Nayanar”.

Parantaka Chozha-I’s inscription is in the form of a Song and his meikeethi is followed as Madurai Konda Koparakesari.

"பரகே சரிக்குப் பதினெட்டாம் ஆண்டில்
உரைசேர் பெரும்புகழ் அல்லூரார் அரைசாரும்
அல்லூரார்க் கம்பலஞ்செய் யின்கீழ் வயக்கல்
எல்லோரும் ஈந்தார் இசைந்து "

This inscription belongs to his 18th reign year, which mentions this place as Woraiyur Kootrathu Allur  and a land was gifted to this temple.

The inscriptions records the gift of lands with their periphery limits. Arinjaya Chozha period inscription records the sati of one of his official Veera Chozha Ilangovel alias Parantaka Kunjaramallan’s wife Gangamadevi. In memory of this 20 kalanju gold was gifted to this temple. Arinjaya Chozha’s another inscription records some gift by Mummudi Chozha Ilangovelaar.

Kandaradita period inscription records the gift of land as Irayili which belongs to the Village Pudukudi.

Sundara Chozha’s 17th reign year inscription starts with title / meikeerthi as “Madurai konda Rajakesari – மதிரை கொண்ட ராஜகேசரி”- records the donations made to this temple.

The official Mayilaithindan of the Sundara Chozha, who constructed the Temple at Perungudi gave gifts to this temple also.


LEGENDS
Ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Kamdhenu, hence Lord Shiva is called as Sri Pasupatheeswarar.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri days and other days depends on the sponsor.

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Nagars are in front of the Rajagopuram under a tree. There is a mottai gopuram after the Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam and Rishabam are after the second level mottai gopuram under a tiled roof mandapam. Balipeedam, Rishabam and Dwarapalakas are also in the ardha mandapam. In koshtam Dakshinamurthy ( Muyalagan is found missing ), Maha Vishnu and Durga.

Balamurugan, Suriyan Chandran, Bhairavar, Shani, Kshethra Devi ( Jyeshta Devi ), Uthanga Maharishi Santhana Krishnan, Vinayagar and Saptamatrikas  are in the artha mandapam. In praharam Niruthi Vinayagar, Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Vahanas, Mahalakshmi and Chandikeswarar. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi at the entrance to artha mandapam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple complex consists of Rajagopuram, Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. The Rajagopuram was built during Pandya period ( Pandya emblem is on the ceiling ).

The adhishtanam has the Jagathy with padmam, Virutha Kumuda and Yazhi vari. Elephant comes out of Maharathundam looks cute. A Two tier vesara Vimana is over the sanctum sanctorum.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per the inscriptions this place was called as “Thiruvadakudi” and Lord Shiva was called as “Vadkudi Nathar”, “Thiruvadakudi Mahadevar / Parameswarar”. This Place was under Woraiyur Kootram, Keel Allur, Kilar Kootram and Keralanthaka valanadu during different periods.

Sundara Chozha’s period, inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp by one of his important official Veerachozha Ilangovel’s son Parantakanar. For the same gold was gifted.

Parantaka Choz’s period inscription mentions areas of the Kaveri river bank as “Karikalakarai”. This word gives the important relationship between Chozha King Karikalan and the river Kaveri, even after thousand’s of years.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s, period inscription records that the Ambal temple was constructed. Ambal was called as “Thirukamakotta Nachiyar”.

Parantaka Chozha’s period inscription records that fields were damaged due to flood in the Kaveri River. In lieu of the damaged land, some other land was given.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sept ), Skanda Sashti and Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Thirukarthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ) and monthly pradoshams.
