Vattakottai / வட்டக்கோட்டை, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Fort was a part of the Nanjil Nadu Heritage Walk organized by Yaaooyaakay and Celebrate Kanchi in association with Tamil Nadu Tourism and Development Department, Kanyakumari, scheduled from 24^th to 26^th January 2020. During this Heritage walk, we covered Hindu Temples, Jain Monuments, the oldest Christian Church, Old Forts, an overhead water channel, and, of course, a Natural Bonsai Garden too.

The remains of a cannon

This was a military fort once, and the period/purpose of construction is not known. It was used by different foreign rulers, and the same was reconstructed during Travancore/Thiruvithangur King Marthanda Varma’s (1729 – 1758 CE) and Ramavarma Maharaja period under the supervision of Dilanai. Even though this fort was called Vattakottai (Circular Fort) – வட்டக்கோட்டை, it is actually square in shape with an entrance on the west side. Bastions are on all 4 corners, and the Northeast corner bastion is extended into the sea. The extended bastion can be accessed through both steps and a ramp. (It was said that the ramp was used to move the Guns to the extended rampart bastion. The rampart is about 25 feet high, and the fort covers around 3.5 acres. Slots are provided on the parapet wall of the rampart to keep the guns/rifles against the enemy. There are 4 mandapas built abutting the inner walls of the rampart. There is a square pool at the center of the fort.

It was said that this fort might have been used to monitor the movement of the enemy ships along the coastal region between Kanyakumari to Aralvaimozhi. At the top of the entrance, there is an emblem-like image, in the form of a bas-relief, in which two elephants, a conch between their trunks, and interlaced letters of VR are shown. Above the name of this fort is displayed as VATTAKOTTAI. This fort has been controlled by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI since 1966.

வட்டக்கோட்டை - கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம்

கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டம் அகஸ்தீஸ்வரம் வட்டத்தில் நாகர்கோயிலுக்குக் கிழக்கே 18 கீ.மீ தொலைவில் வட்டக்கோட்டை அமைந்துள்ளது. வட்ட வடிவத்தில் உள்ளதால் வட்டக்கோட்டை (தவறு - சதுர வடிவில் உள்ளது) என்று பெயர் பெற்றது திருவாங்கூரின் வேணாட்டு அரசர்களால் கி.பி. 18ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் இக்கோட்டைச் சீரமைக்கப்பட்டது. முதலில் செங்கற்கோட்டையான இது டச்சு தளபதி டிலனாய் அவர்களால் கற்கோட்டையாக வலிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. 1809ல் ஆங்கில படைகள் திருவாங்கூர் அரசை அழித்த போது வட்டக்கோட்டையைச் சிதைக்காமல் விட்டது. நான்கு புறமும் உள்ள உள்கோட்டை அமைப்பு, தூண்கள் கொண்ட மண்டபத்துடனும் சமமான கூரை அமைப்புடனும் உள்ளது. முத்துக்குளிக்கும் கன்னியாகுமரி துறைமுகத்தின் பாதுகாப்பு அரணாக இங்குள்ள படைகள் செயல்பட்டன. உள் கொத்தளம் உறுதியான கருங்கல்லால் ஆன படிக்கட்டுகள் மூலம் அடையும் வகையில் உள்ளது. பீரங்கிகள் கொண்டு செல்ல வசதியாகக் சாய்தளம் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. வெளிக்கோட்டைச் சுவர் முற்றிலும் நன்கு செதுக்கப்பட்ட கருங்கல்லால் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. முக்கிய நுழைவாயில் அழகான வளைவுடனும் அதன்மேல் திருவாங்கூர் அரசர்களின் அரச சின்னத்துடனும் உள்ளது. கோட்டையின் நடுவில் அமைந்துள்ள நீர்நிலை இங்கு தங்கியிருந்த ராணுவ அதிகாரிகளுக்கு நிரந்தரமான நீர் ஆதாரமாக விளங்கியது.

இக்கோட்டையில் கண்காணிப்பு அறை, ஓய்வறை, ஆயுதச்சாலை ஆசியவை இருந்தன. மண்டப விதானத்தில் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள மீன் சின்னம். இது பாண்டியர்களுக்கும் கி.பி.12ம் நூற்றாண்டில் முத்துச் கலாபத்தைக் காப்பதற்கு ஏற்ற இராணுவதளமாக இருந்ததைக் காட்டும். (தவறு) எனவே பாண்டியர்கள் ஒரு காலத்தில் இக்கோட்டையை வசப்படுத்தியியருந்தார்கள் எணவும் நம்பப்படுகிறது தமிழகத்தின் முக்கிய சுற்றுலாத்தலங்களுள் ஒன்றாக இக்கோட்டை கருதப்படுகிறது.
