Valeeswarar Temple / Thiruvaleeswarar Temple, Koovathur, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

19th January 2020.
After a gap of 2 months, once again started the temple Visit along with Mr Kesavan, a Heritage enthusiast from Arasar Koil to Koovathur on the banks of Palar River, in Chengalpattu District. Koovathur was our last stop to visit both Vishnu and Shiva Temples.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple faces east with a 5-tier Rajagopuram. The temple tank with lotus flowers is in front of the temple.  Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Nandhi are after the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are in the arthamandapam. Moolavar is in the sanctum and in koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai.  

In prakaram Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Ambal Sannadhi, Chandran, Suryan, Saneeswarar, Bhairavar and Chandikeswarar. Ambal sannadhi is in the mukha mandapam facing south.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of a sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam, and Maha mandapam. The temple was reconstructed in recent years. Granite tiles are paved in the praharam.


HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS
The word Koovam in Tamil means well. Since the 8 Holy rivers took the form of Wells, this place is called a Koovathur. It was told that the temple is more than 1000 years old and there is no inscription or evidence available in the temple. The temple might have been built along with Adhi Kesava Perumal Temple, during the 15th to 16th Century, Vijayanagara period.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, Vaali/Vali killed the demon Mayavi after fighting for 28 months in a cave. So he has got the Brahma hathi dosha. To get rid of dosha, Vaali worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

The temple will be kept open between 08.00 hrs to 11.30 hrs and 17.30 hrs to 19.30 hrs.

About 200 meters from the Koovathur bus stop.
Koovathur is on the ECR Road, 13 KM from Kalpakkam, 38 KM from Chengalpattu, and 80 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Chengalpattu.
