The
visit to this V O Chidambaram Pillai’s
Home and library at Ottapidaram in Thoothukudi District was a part of “Temples,
Heritage Sites and archaeological excavation sites Visit around
Thoothukudi”, between Dec 1st
and 2nd December 2023.
There are many articles and Books written by
various authors of V O Chidambaram Pillai’s birth home at Ottapidaram in
Thoothukudi District. The Birth house is of two floors. The Ground floor is
housed with his statue and Photos and the Library is on the first floor. Hence
I would like to add some points or the mile stones in the life History of V O
Chidambaram Pillai and some details which are not commonly available in the
websites. This House at Ottapidaram was declared as a monument / nationalised by
then Chief Minister K Kamaraj, on 12th December 1961. A Mani
mandapam was built at Tirunelveli at a cost of Rs 75 Lakhs and declared open by
J Jayalalitha, then the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 03rd June
2005.
Important mile stones of V O Chidambaram Pillai’s life History…
1872 Sri V O Chidambaram was born on 05th Sep 1872 to Sri
Olaganathan and Smt Paramayee Ammal and done primary schooling at Ottapidaram.
1912. Released from Kannanoor prison
1922. Again started the Advocate Service, at Kovilpatti and Thoothukudi.
1891 Educated in St Xaviers High School, Tuticorin and obtained a qualified Pleader in law at Trichy Law college.
1895. Married Smt Valliammai and started practicing as Lawyer at Ottapidaram.
1912. Released from Kannanoor prison
1922. Again started the Advocate Service, at Kovilpatti and Thoothukudi.

1906. The Swadesi Steam Navigation Company was registered and 2 ships were brought.

1906 Swadesi stores are established. Participated
in the Mill strike and 12 hours job was reduced to 09 hrs job.
1907 Conference of Congress at Surat Participated and gave support to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
1908 Crime of protestation against British Government at Tirunelvel and Thoothukudi and imprisoned to life sentence at Coimbatore and Kannanoor. The same was reduced to 6 years after appeal.
1933 Created Literary Creations, like starting of Kamban Kazhagam and observed silence to increase the life of atma.
1936. Died at Thoothukudi.

He also supported the remarriage of widows, inter-caste marriage.

This is to Certify that ( Late ) V. O. Chidambaram
Pillai S/o Loganatha Pillai of Ottapidaram, Taluk of Chidambaranar District started his career as Criminal Pleader at Ottapidaram in 1896- gave up practice
and concentrated on Swadesi Movement and became its leader. He was instrumental
in starting the Swadesi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 at Tuticorin in
opposition to British India Steam navigation Company and involved in Trade
Union Works in Coimbatore. He was arrested with Subramania Siva and Padmanabha
Iyengar in 1908 and sentenced to transportation for Life under Sections 124-A
and 143-A, I.P.C and kept in Coimbatore Jail and on appeal the
conviction was reduced to 6 years transportation ( Based on the book “WHO’s WHO OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS ( TAMIL NADU )
