The visit to the ancient Sri Tribhuvana
Chakravarteeswarar Temple at Unjanai near Karaikudi was a part of the Shiva and Vishnu
Temples of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai Districts Visit on 23rd & 24th September 2023. This
ancient Shiva temple is en route to Mathur from Ariyakudi. This place was
called “Unjanaimahalam”.

The temple faces east with a Rajagopuram base.
A Vinayagar temple is one the south, and the Temple tank is in front of the
temple. Rishabam and balipeedam are after the entrance. In koshtam Vinayagar,
Dakshinamurthy with a mandapam supported by two lions, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and
Durgai.
In praharam Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena
Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, and Nagars.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on an upanam and adhistanam. The adhistanam consists of a Padma
base, Jagathy, Muppattai kumudam, and pattika. The Bhitti starts with Vedika.
Vishnu kantha pilasters with square base, naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus
petals mandi, palakai, Veera kandam, and Pushpa pothyal. The koshtas are a padra
sala type. Kumbha panjaras are between koshtas.
The Vimana above the sanctum sanctorum does not match any temple
architecture.

As per the inscription in the temple and the stone outside the temple, the temple may belong to the Pandyas period. The temple may
receive contributions from Chozhas. The Outer walls are constructed with
laterite stones at a later date.

conducted.

closing times are unpredictable.
But written as 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and 17.30 hrs
to 19.00 hrs.

This Sri Tribhuvana Chakravartheeswarar Temple at
Unjanai is about 5.4 km from Arulmigu Tiruvengadamudaiyan temple at Ariyakudi,
6 km from Sri Thanthondreeswarar Temple at Iluppaikudi, 5.5 km from Sri Iinutreeswarar
Temple, Mathur, and 10 km from Karaikudi Bus stand.
The nearest Railway Station is Karaikudi.
