The
visit to this Vinnavaraya Perumal Temple at Ambattur was a part of the “Lesser
Known Vishnu, Shiva, Amman Temples of Chennai Visit”, on 23rd
October 2022. Most of the temples were reconstructed in recent years and
some retain their original structure. All these temples have a long history of
Pallava, Chozha, and Vijayanagar.

Consort : Sri Kanakavalli Thayar
Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing east with an entrance arch. The stucco image of Maha Vishnu as
Vinnavaraya Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Balipeedam, Kodimaram /
dwajasthambam and Garudan are under the mandapam. Dwarapalakas Jayan and
Vijayan are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum is
with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Utsavars are in front of Moolavar. There are no
images in the Kostas. Thulabharam is in the maha mandapam.

Praharam, Sri Kanakavalli Thayar, Andal, Anjaneyar, Ramanujar, Nammalwar, Ramar
/ Perumal Padam, Nagars with Vinayagar, Vishnu Durgai, Navagrahas, bas relief
of Lizard and Tortoise, Nagar and Vinayagar as Thumbikai Alwar.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam / Maha mandapam and a open
mukha mandapam. The temple from adhistanam to sigaram was constructed with
bricks. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on upanam and pada bandha adhistanam with
jagathy, three patta kumudam. The prastaram is with valapi and kapotam. Two tier
Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Maha Vishnu's various avatars with
consorts are on the vimanam. Vimana Kostas are sala type. The sigaram is of vesara style.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It
is claimed that the temple is more than 1000 years old and Moolavar was called Kariya Manicka Perumal. The present
structure may belong to the 18th – 19th Century.
Initially, Perumal was called Kariya Manicka Perumal, who removes ignorance, Curse, sin, etc,. Later the same was changed to the present name of Vinnavaraya
Perumal, why and when it was changed is not known.
LEGENDS
Devotees
worship Perumal and Thayar for a better marriage alliance, Child boon, to get
all wealth, to get rid of poverty, to get rid of Sarpa dosha, etc,. Devotees
offer Thulabharam after their wishes are fulfilled.
It
is believed that, if Thayar is worshiped with Bilva leaves on Fridays, the
hurdles in the marriage will be removed. It will be auspicious to worship
Perumal on Thiruvonam Nakshatra day to get more blessings.
Lizard
dosha Pariharam. A lizard and Tortoise bas relief panel is installed entrance
of the Temple, similar to the Kanchipuram Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple. This
stone slab was originally in the front mandapam. Devotees do Parihara pooja for
the lizard dosha when it falls on the head or any part of the body.
As
per the legend, a Nawab, who was ruling this area, along with his soldiers came
around these places. Due to hunger, they all got exhausted. So Nawab asked his
soldiers to get some food. After searching, the soldiers found this Perumal
temple and asked the archakar, for some food to eat. The Archakar gave the
Perumal’s prasad made of Varagu Rice. On seeing this Nawab asked the Archakar,
why low-quality rice was offered. The Archagar replied that, due to poverty
in this area, he can offer only this varahu rice. The Nawab immediately
ordered to supply of good quality rice and extended all help to this temple. The
Nawab took the Prasad, and it turned to Good quality rice in front of his eyes
mystically. Nawab was very happy over the grace of Perumal.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular Poojas as per vaikanasa agama, special Poojas are conducted on
Amavasya, Pournami, Kiruthigai, Chathurti, Thiruvonam, Ekadasi. Adipooram, Krishna
Jayanthi, etc,. Pavitrotsavam is conducted during November every year and
Vaikunta Ekadasi etc are conducted in a grand manner.
Nammalwar
is in dhyana posture and devotees do archana to Garudan on Swati nakshatra day
to get rid of Sarpa dosha.

hrs.

temple is about 500 meters from the Telephone Exchange bus stop, 1.2 KM from
Ambattur Industrial Estate Depot, 11.5 KM from Koyambedu Bus terminus, and 15 KM
from Chennai Central Railway Station. Nearest Railway Station is Ambattur.
