Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple/ஸ்ரீ காமாட்சி அம்மன் கோவில், Kanchipuram, Kanchipuram District Tamil Nadu.

SRI KAMAKSHI AMMAN TEMPLE.
There is no separate Sannadhi for Ambal in any of the Shiva Temples of Kanchipuram and this temple is considered an Ambal temple of all Shiva Temples. This Kamakshi Amman temple is about a km from the Bus stand and Sri Ekambareswarar Temple.

The Main Deity: Sri Kamakshi Amman

Some of the important features of this temple are...
The temple faces southeast direction with a 5-tier Rajagopuram with a lot of stucco images. In addition to that there 3 more Rajagopuras on the other 3 sides. Dwajasthambam with Balipeedam is in front of Sanctum Sanctorum near Rajagopuram. There is also another Amman Murti in dhabas/standing posture on one leg in the same mandapam.

Sannadhi for Gnana Saraswathi Lakshmi, Aruba Lakshmi, Shyamala Varahi, Annapoorani, Arthanari, Pilakaasam, Sri Chakkaram, Dhabas Kamakshi,  and Bangaru Kamakshi.

Perumal in this temple is called Kalvan, since he overhears the conversation of Sri Lakshmi and Sri Kamakshi Amman through hiding. This Perumal temple is also one of the 108 Divya Desam and mangalasasanam was done by Thirumangai Azhwar.

ARCHITECTURE
Amman is in a 24 pillar mandapam, called Gayathiri mandapam. Amman Vimanam and Aadhi Sankarar Sannadhi vimanas are covered with golden plates. It was said that 24 acharam is in the form of 24 pillars.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple was a Buddhist temple, dedicated to Dharadevi. It was said that a Buddha idol unearthed from this temple is now kept at Chennai Egmore Museum.

The Pallava Kinga Narasingapottaraiyar's (Narasingavarman-II), 18th reign year inscription records the gift of land for alleviating the brahmarakshasa afflicted by Queen Loka Mahadevi. The details are...
The Kamakshi-amman temple at Kanchipuram has yielded 60 inscriptions. The earliest among them (No. 360) belongs to Narasingappõttaraiyar. The expression põttaraiyar clearly indicates that it refers to a Pallava king of that name. The inscription which is damaged is dated in the 18th regnal year of the king and is engraved in characters of about the 9th century. It seems to register a gift of land to the temple of the arhat (arivar) in Magilampalli. Anukka-pallavan who is mentioned in this connection appears to be, as the expression implies, an officer in the personal service of the king. The record also states that the queen Loka- mahādēvi was afflicted by a brahmarakshasa and mentions an āchārya of the ājīvaka darśana who played some part in probably alleviating her affliction. Since the imperial Pallava line had ceased to exist and there was no ruler of the name Narasingappõttaraiyar at the period of this record, we have to conjecture that this epigraph, if it narrates an event of the reign of Pallava Narasimhavarman II, also known as Narasimhapõtavarman, is a later copy of an earlier record. The Text of the inscription is given below...

LEGEND
This is one of the 51 Sakthi Peetam.

It was believed that Pandasuran was killed by Sri Kamakshi as a 9-year-old Child. After the killing, her Ugra ( anger) was not reduced. She was pacified to Santham /normal by Sri Shankaracharya through the installation of Sri Chakkara.

It was also believed that Amman’s moola idol /moortham was installed by Rishi Durvasa.

It was also believed that all the Navagrahas are under the feet of Sri Kamakshi Amman, hence devotees need not worry about Navagraha's fear when they worship Sri Kamakshi.
