Dhyana Buddha Statue / ధ్యాన బుద్ధ శిల్పం, Amaravathi/ Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh.

The 125-foot Dhyana Buddha statue faces east on the banks of the Krishna River, on 4.5 acres of land. This statue is one of the tallest manmade structures in the world. The Buddha statue has been designed by incorporating features from all the 50 types of Buddhist sculptures seen at 145 major heritage sites across India. The Buddha’s teachings found in 24 chapters and 424 stanzas have also been made out of stucco on 200 panels on the two floors of the main hall, below the Buddha Statue. The 200 panels are the replica of the panels under display in the Amaravati ASI Museum. The area is divided into four zones depicting the noble truths and five Ayaka pillars for stages of life. The Ground floor is designed for the display of paintings of Buddha’s teachings and a meditation hall. A park was also developed around the statue. The park contains mini stupas, Dharma chakra, etc. The design is inspired by over 50 sculptures’ designs from over 145 Buddhist sites across India and abroad.

HISTORY
The Dhyana Buddha project was conceived and executed by Social Welfare joint director Regulla. Mallikarjuna Rao in 2003-4 with the funding of Guntur district collector. However, the tourism department took it over in 2007 and completed it in 2015. More than Rs 3 crore has already been spent on the project, say sources. The Dalai Lama, who visited the place during Kalachakra in 2006, donated Rs 30 lakh and promised to provide 300 volumes of Buddhist literature to develop the place as an international Buddhist study center.

Homage to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha
In Honor of the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha

This stupa is dedicated to the supreme treasures of Aryadesha: the Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha; the Dharma, the timeless nature and the Sangha, the community of faithful practitioners who uphold the path. More than a just physical structure, it symbolizes the enlightened mind, the embodiment of the ultimate truth, the luminous path to liberation and the compassionate display for all sentient beings.

In the auspicious year of 2024, 23 stupas are being erected across the sacred landscape of India to commemorate a profoundly significant event-the recitation of the Buddhavaccana at many sacred sites. May these stupas be adorned with offerings of flowers and butter lamps, especially on the sacred full moon days, as a reflection of devoted hearts. Let them serve as gentle prayers for a world embraced by peace, illuminated by compassion, and united in the boundless Journey toward awakening.
Sarvam Mangalam
