The visit to the Sri Kailasanathar Temple at
Senthamangalam was a part of the “Temples and Heritage Sites of Thoothukudi
District Visit” on 15th February 2025.
This
Sri Kailasanathar temple is the 9th of the Nava Kailaya temples and Sukran parihara sthalam on the
banks of the Thamirabarani River. This village, Sernthamangalam, is also called Sernthapoomangalam, located where the Thamirabarani River confluences with the
sea, the Palk Strait.

The temple faces east, with an entrance from the south. The east side entrance is kept closed. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Rishabam are after the east-side entrance. Moolavar is on a round avudayar. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar, and Murugan are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. A Rishabam is also in the ardha mandapam and faces the Sanctum Sanctorum. Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, and Durgai are in front of the koshtas.

Agasthiyar, Saniswara, Bairavar, Chandran Suryan, and Adikara Nandi.

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram is simple with valapi and kapotam. A two-tier brick nagara vimanam is on the prastaram. Shiva, Dhakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, Shiva’s dance balancing on the left hand, Shiva Parvati Marriage, and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are on the tala and greeva koshtams.

HISTORY

The temple was built during the Pandya King Kulasekhara or Sundara Pandya period. As per the inscription, this place was called ARRur Senthamangalam.

Kumbabhishekam was conducted on 15th July 2011. (It was raining on
that day), 17th August 1908, and 13th July 2005.
LEGENDS
This Sri Kailasanathar temple is the 9th of the Nava Kailaya temples. It is believed that Sukra worshipped Shiva in this temple. This is a Sukra dosha parihara sthalam. It is also believed that those who take a dip in the Chandikan theertha and worship Shiva will get the Sukra Yoga.

As per one legend, during the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, all the
Devas, Rishis, and Munis assembled at Mount Kailash to witness the marriage.
Due to this, the earth, the South side rose up, and the North side went down.
Shiva asked Agasthiyar to go to the South to balance it. On the way to
Podhigai, Agasthiyar installed and worshipped Shiva Lingas at many places. It
is believed that the Moolavar of this temple was also installed and worshiped
by Agasthyar.
As
per another legend, Agasthiyar’s first disciple, Uroma Maharishi, and the Kings
of Seas attained mukti at this place.

Apart from one kala regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pournami, Amavasya days, Adi Amavasya days, pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, etc.
