The visit to this
Jyeshta Devi at Komal was part of the “Thirukadaiyur, Akkur and Therazhundur,
Padal Petra Sthalangal visit” on 22nd October 2026. The village
Komal is on the banks of the Veeracholan River, and the same was called Kopuri
in ancient times.
The Jyeshta Devi is
near the Mariamman Temple in Komal village near Mayiladuthurai. Jyeshta Devi is
worshipped by the locals, and I couldn’t identify the minute details of the
sculpture.
Jyeshta Devi is in a
sitting posture with legs wide apart, shown with karanda makuda and a dress below
her waist. Holding blue lotus/ Nilotpala flower in both hands. She has a slim
stomach and thighs, similar to Kongu Nattu Jyeshta Devi sculptures. Her son and
daughter are on both sides, holding a lotus flower in one hand. The crow and broom are
missing in this sculpture.
Based on the
iconography, experts believe that this Jyeshta Devi belongs to the 11th
to 12th century Chozha period.
