Arulmigu Sri Kottai Muniyappan Tirukovil / அருள்மிகு ஶ்ரீ கோட்டை முனியப்பன் திருக்கோவில், Thoravalur, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu.
The
Visit to this Kottai Muniyappan Temple at Thoravalur in Tiruppur District was a
part of “Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures, Hero Stone and Memorial stones
in Shiva & Amman Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on
27th and 28th February 2022. On the way to Sri Veeramathi
Amman temple from Thoravalur Amman Temple, happened to see this Muniappan
Temple.
Usually
in Kongu region, big size stucco
Muniyappan images are built on the outskirts of the Villages. Since this
Maniyappan temple called as Kottai Muniyappan Temple, the original temple might
have been built inside a Fort, as a guarding deity to the Fort. Similar temple
is also exists at Perundurai, which is about 15 KM from this place. Unfortunately
there is no evidence of fort existed at Thoravalur.
The
big stucco 4 Muniyappan are in sitting posture facing North. A Stone
Karuppaswamy and Saptha kannis are on the left side of Muniyappan. Of the 4, three
are in same size and right one is little bigger. Muniyappan are with ferocious
look without any weapons and both hands are on their thigh. On the opposite
side 3 Muniyappan stone images are kept of which one Muniyappan is in kneeled
position. All the three are holding sword and shield. In addition to this there
two aruvals in vertical position and Trishuls are erected. POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart
from Regular poojas, special poojas are conducted in the Tamil Month Panguni. The Aruva of
Kottai Muneeswarar will be brought from the Village Avarapalayam. The
Celebrations includes scarification of Goats / Sheeps / cocks etc. Annadhanam
will also be served with non vegetarian food.

Amman Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on 27th and 28th
February 2022.
HERO / SATI STONEThis
Hero / Sati stone is on the east side of the temple. In the Hero is in standing
posture keeping his right hand on the sword and left hand on the hip. He is not
shown with tuft, but the hair is loosely hanging. The hero wears ornaments on his neck and
ears. The Hero’s wife is shown on his right holding a pot in her left hand and
what is in her right hand is not known. The inscription is inscribed on the
base of the hero stone. The original inscription reads as....

.. டாண... 5. .... ந்….MEMORIAL STONESThere
are two sets of memorial stones and a separate memorial stone. In the two sets,
the hero is stone at the centre and his wives are on his both sides. All the
three are in anjali hastam. In a separate memorial stone A Man is with an
woman. Both are in Anjali hastam. Considering the style of tuft and the
iconography, these memorial stones may belongs to 15th to 16th
Century.

Deity : Sri Athanur Amman / Sri
Thoravalur Amman
Some
of the salient features of this temple are....The
temple is facing North with a Deepa sthambam with a mandapam. Donors
bas-reliefs are on the mandapa pillars. TriShul, Oonjal, Two balipeedam and
Simha vahanam are in front of the temple.
Amman is with 8 hands, holding various weapons, in sitting posture. Dwarapalaka, Dwarapalaki and two memorial
stones are in front of sanctum sanctorum, under a Asbestos sheet mandapam. The
Koshtas are empty.
In
praharam two stucco Horses made of brick and lime mortar without head, Durgai, Hero stones, Memorial
stones and Nagars. The details of the Hero and Memorial stones are written in a
separate post.
ARCHITECTUREThe
Temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a Mukha mandapam. The
sanctum sanctorum is on a padabandha adhisthana
with threepatta kumuda. Karnapathi and salaipathi are separated with
Brahma kantha pilasters. Shiva Lingam and Demon / asura’s head are in the makara
thorana.
From
adhisthanam to prastaram, constructed with stone. Lot of Fish reliefs are carved
on the wall. An ekathala Vimanam with 3 kalasams is on the sanctum
sanctorum.
Considering
the Mandapa pillars, the Pilasters, Hero and Memorial stones the temple may
belongs to 15th to 16th Century, Vijayanagara period. The
Temple was not renovated and looks with original structure.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSConsidering
the Hero / sati stone, memorial stones and style of construction the temple may
belongs to 15th to 16th Century Vijayanagara period. The
original temple was not renovated and kept in original condition.
LEGENDSThere
is a legend behind the head less Horses. As per the legend, the Pujari used to
tie the grass bundle near the horses. Next morning the grass bundles are
missing. So he wants to check how it disappears. So he stayed in the night and
found the stucco horses are eating the grass. On seeing that the horse’s head
was blown out.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSOnly
oru kala pooja is conducted and no special poojas or annual celebrations are
conducted.
TEMPLE TIMINGSSince
or kala Pooja is conducted, the sanctum sanctorum will be kept opened in the
morning hours.

Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple / Kamatchi Amman Temple / காமாட்சி அம்மன் கோயில், Velliraveli, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu.
The
Visit to this Sri Kamatchi Amman Temple at Velliraveli in Tiruppur District was
a part of “Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures, Hero Stone and Memorial stones in Shiva & Amman Temples of Tiruppur
and Erode Districts Visit, on 27th and 28th February
2022. This temple is on the northern part of the Village. Usually Kamatchi
Amman is the favorable God for the Mudaliar Community, since most of the
people belongs to that Community, whose main profession is weaving. Main
Deity : Sri Kamatchi Amman
Some
of the salient features of this temple are… The
temple facing east with a balipeedam. Lakshmi and Saraswati stucco images are
on both sides of the porch. Stucco images of Amman’s various forms, Shiva
Linga, Amman worshiping Lord Shiva, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar
are on the top of the parapet wall. A Rishabam and balipeedam are in front of
Sanctum Sanctorum. Dwarapalakis, Vinayagar and Sri Murugan are on the entrance,
both sides of sanctum sanctorum. Amman is in sitting posture, holding Pasam, Angusam, Sugar cane and a lotus
flower. In koshtam, Maheswari, Goumari
and Vaishnavi.
A
memorial stone Gifted by Chitra in the year 2002 with reliefs Anna Chakram,
Dharma Chakram and Spear / Vel is in the praharam.
ARCHITECTUREThe
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and a mukha mandapam.
The stucco vimanam with three kalasams
is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Amman’s various forms are on the
Vimanam. The complete temple was built with brick and cement.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSAs
per the inscription available at the temple, Main Deity Sri Kamatchi Amman was
installed in the sanctum sanctorum and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 15th
February 1984, under the head of Koonampatti Guru Maha Sannidhanam Sri-La-Sri Na Saravana Manicka Vasaga Swamigal
and the temple was built by the Senguntha Mudaliar Community.
Pavukkal
was laid on 1st July 2001. On 16th March 2011,
Punarutharana ashta bandhana maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted under the head
of Koonampatti Adheenam Sivasri Thirugnanasambandar Swamigal.
LEGENDSThe
Senguntha Mudaliar Community People Considers as equivalent to Kanchi Kamatchi
Amman and also offer prayers to this
Kamakshi as their kuladeivam.
People
prays Kamatchi Amman, to remove marriage obstacles and Child boon.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart
from oru kala pooja special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Pournami ( Full
moon ) and Amavasya ( new moon ) days.

oru kala pooja is conducted, the temple will not be kept closed after pooja and
will open to 19.00 hrs.
HOW TO REACHThe
temple is at the beginning of the Village Velliraveli and about 2 KM off
Kunnathur – Perundurai main Road. Town bus route No 10 is available from
Tiruppur and P3 is from Perundurai. The
temple is 7 KM from Kunnathur, 15 KM from Perundurai, 26 KM from Tiruppur and
35 KM from Erode.Nearest

Deity : Sri Kariya Kaliamman
Some
of the salient features of this temple are…The
temple is facing east with a Deepa Sthambam and Kundam /Fire walk Kundam.
Bas-relief of Durgai and Vinayagar are at the base of the Deepa Sthambam. The
Deepa Sthambam Mandapam pillars has the bas-relief of 2 male and females, may
be donors. Maduraiveeran / Muneeswarar sannithi with a dog is on the right side
of the entrance. Stucco image of Amman is on the top of the entrance along with
Vinayagar and Murugan.
Oonjal,
Kodimaram and Simha Vahanam are immediately after the entrance. Entrance is in
the form of Mandapam where Amman’s procession vahanas are kept. In Praharam
Kannimoola Ganapathi, 3 stucco horses and a Stucco Cow.
Dwarapalaka
and Dwarapalaki are at the entrance of ardha mandapam. Kariyakaliamman in
sanctum is with 8 hands holds various weapons and head of asura. While the
right leg is in lifted condition, the left leg is on an asura’s body.
ARCHITECTUREThe
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is built with stone up to prastaram. A 3 tier
Rajagopuram type Vimanam with 3 Kalasams is over the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco
images of Kariya Kaliamman is on the Vimanam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONSThe
temple may be existed since 18th Century. In 1804 CE the temple,
Sanctum Sanctorum, Ardha mandapam, Maha mandapam are renovated along with
construction of praharam wall. Chariot utsavam and Kumbhabhishekam was
conducted on 13th October 1804, by Thiruvenkada Goundan’s son
Subramaniya Gounden’s son Chinnappa Gounden of Vellode Vellalar community
Sathanthai Gothram, who belongs to Kunnathur Velliraveli in Kuruppa Nadu. ( The
work was initiated with erection of Palakal on 15th October 1803 CE ). The
original inscription reads as… ( Erode District Inscriptions )

Temple
was reconstructed with Sanctum sanctorum, construction of Parivara Murti
sannidhis and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 24th Feb 2002.
A
mock Chariot procession was conducted with new Chariot on 17th
February 2010 and Chariot Utsavam was conducted along with Kundam on 27th
April 2010, after 250 years.
On
08th March 2017 Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted after attending
repair works.
The
temple is under the administrative control of HR & CE Department, Uthukuli
Sri Kailasanathar Temple.
LEGENDSThe
Sathanthai sect of Vellalar Community of Kuruppa Nadu worships Kariya Kaliamman
as their Kuladeivam and this is also the Velliraveli Village guarding deity.
Ladies
worships on Amavasya days for Child boon and as part of thanksgiving, they do
fire walk on annual Kundam Thiruvizha.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONSApart
from regular oru kala pooja special poojas are conducted on Amavasya Days and
Annual festival in the month Chithirai month will be celebrated in a grand
manner with Chariot Utsavam and Kundam / Theemithi Thiruvizha.
