The
Visit to this Hero Stone and Thai Nadukal installed in front of Sri
Veeramathi Amman Temple at Thoravalur in Tiruppur District was a part of
“Ayyanar, Durgai Sculptures, Hero Stone and
Memorial stones in Shiva & Amman
Temples of Tiruppur and Erode Districts Visit, on 27th and 28th
February 2022.
HERO STONE
In
this Hero stone, the Hero is in standing posture facing east and the face is looking front. Holding a sword in the right
hand in the raised position, the left hand is holding something that may be a shield. The
hero’s tuft is on his right side and wearing ornaments on the neck, hands, and
elongated earlobes. He is wearing a half
dress and a sword holder is hanging from the waist. The big mustache and the tuft
remind us that this Hero stone may belong to the Vijayanagara Period ie… the 15th
to 16th Century.
THAI NADUKAL
This
Thai Nadukal faces east, on the left side of the Road. In this Thai Nadukal, a Lady is carrying a Child, and Animals /
Cattle, Goat / Sheep / Cow are shown on both sides of her. What she is holding in
her left hand and the actual purpose of erecting this Nadukal is not known. Some of
the experts believe that this Lady / a herder, who takes care of her
cattle, might have died, either to save from thieves or from the wild
animals.
