period, and the front mandapam was constructed during the Vijayanagara period. In recent
years, the temple was re-plastered, some stucco images were added, and Maha

LEGENDS
Once, there was an argument between Brahma, the
creator, and Maha Vishnu, the savior, about who was greater. To make them realize
their ignorance, Lord Shiva gave the darshan as a Shiva Jyothi/ a column of
fire, and asked them to find out the start and end of him. Maha Vishnu took the
form of Varaha and excavated the earth to find the start of Lord Shiva. Brahma
took the form of Bird Annam and flew up and up. Both Maha Vishnu and Brahma
couldn’t find the start and end of Lord Shiva and accepted Lord Shiva as the only
great of all and worshiped him.
It is believed that the colour of the Shiva
Lingam changes during Summer and winter.
