Sri Mayuranathar Temple / மயூரநாதர் கோவில், மயிலாடுதுறை, Mayiladuthurai, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 156th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 39th sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This is one of the 6 Shiva equivalent to Kashi. Since Ambal in the form of Peahen ( மயில் ) worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, the place is called as Mayuram which turned to Mayiladuthurai lake Mylapore at Chennai.
 

Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruvaduthurai, then he went Thiru Vila Nagar. When Appar came along with Thirugnanasambandar up to Kolakka, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruchemponpalli.

Some of the important features of this temple are as follows.
The temple is facing east with a 9 tier Rajagopuram and there is an entrance on the north side too. There are two Dwajasthambas. ( Three temporary Dwajasthambas are  also seen on the three sides in the outer prakaram ). The second level Rajagopuram is of 3 tiers. In koshtam, Narthana Vinayagar, Natarajar, Aalinganamurthy, Mouna Dakshinamurthy ( Dakshinamurthy is Medha Dakshinamurthy/mouna (மௌன )  and gave upadesam to Rishaba Devar in yoga posture ), Lingothbavar, Brahma, Durgai, Gangavijarsanar / Gangadhara  and Pichadanar.

In Prakaram  Chandran & Suryan worshiped Lingas, Mayilammai, Pathanjali, Viyakrapadar, Sekkizhar, Nalvar, Saptamatrikas, Subramaniar, Kuthambai Siddhar, Vinayagar, Sahasra Linga, Pancha Lingas ( Indran, Agni, Vayu, Varunan, Yaman worshiped lingas ), Mahavishnu, Mahalakshmi, Gajalakshmi, Arunachaleswarar, Natarajar sabha, Navagrahas, Saneeswarar, Bhairavar and  Suriyan.

Temples for Sundareswarar, Maha Ganapathy are too big in mandapam ), Natha Sharma, Abayambigai, Aadhi Mayuranathar. A saree  is wrapped for the Linga in the Anavidhyambigai sannadhi. Ambal is in standing posture. Aadi poora Amman is also in the Prakaram

Chidambaram Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple as Mayura Vahanan in his Kshethra kovai Pillai thamizh- ஷேத்திரக் கோவை பிள்ளைத்தமிழ்..

The 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple and mentions Mayiladuthurai as Sikandiyur.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. Latter the same was reconstructed as a stone temple / KaRRali during Chozhas and latter extended during Vijayanagaras.

There are 16 inscriptions recorded from this temple. The inscriptions belongs to Kulothunga-I, Rajathirajan-II, Kulothunga-III, Rajaraja-III and Jadavarman Sundara Pandyan. As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as Mayiladuthurai Udayar.

Except 5, the rest of the inscriptions records the Temple of Ayyarappar, which is south west of  Mayuranathar temple. This temple was under Jayankonda Chozhavalanattu Thiruvazhunthur Nattu Kulothunga Chozhan Kuthalam alias Thiruvaiyarudayar. The inscriptions also records the Ayyarappar installation, Kulothunga Chozhan exempted the Taxes ( Chunkam Thavirtha Chozhan ), and a Vikrama Chozha Thirumadam existed

Rajaraja Chozha-III’s 31st ( 29+1+1) reign year inscription records the gift 2000 kasu deposited with the Sthanattar, of the temple of Thiru mayiladuthurai Udayar, In Tiruvalundur nadu to meet the expenses of daily worship, sacred bath / thirumanjanam, vasthiram /apparels and offerings / naivedyam to Goddess Bhuvanapati Nachiyar consecrated by the donor in the thirunadai maligai / prakara of the temple by Ambalankoyil-Kondan ARRapodaikkudavinan of Sambangudi.

Rajaraja-III’s 14th reign year inscription records the endowment of 500 Kuli land towards Goddess Palliyarai Nachiyar during early morning service by Araiyan Thiruvegambamudayan, of Porosaikkudi of Uyyakondar Valanadu, who is also consecrated the Goddess. The details of the quantity to be distributed after offering is also given. In addition to that during pooja the name of the donor has to be announced.

This temple is under the administrative control of Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam. Murugan sannathi kumara kattalai was carried out through this adheenam.

LEGENDS
Indran, Brahman, Guru, Agasthiyar, Saptamatrikas, Umadevi worshiped lord of this temple.

Ambal worshiped lord of this temple in the form of Pea hen, hence this place is called as Mayuram which turned to the present name of Mayiladuthurai. Also Ambal’s dance was called as Gowri Thandavam, hence this places also called as Gowri Mayuram. This place was also called as Soothavanam, Sikandipuram, Brahmapuram, Thenmayilai, etc.

It is believed that it will be auspicious to take bath ie Thula Snanam in river Kaveri in the month Aippasi. Kashi Viswanathar with Visalakshi temple is at the Thula snana place on the banks of river kaveri. On Kadai muzhukku day ( the last day of Aippasi month ), all the temple Urchavars of Mayiladuthurai will join with Mayuranathar at Kaveri for Theerthavari.

As per another legend, Daksha, father of ma Parvati conducted an yagna in which all the celestial deities are invited, but Lord Shiva and ma Parvati was not invited. Angered ma Parvati went to the Yagna and argued with Daksha for Lord’s Share. But Daksha didn’t gave respect to ma Parvati. Lord Shiva sent Veerabhadra to destroy the yagna and killed Daksha too. Since ma Parvati went there without Lord Shiva’s permission, she was cursed to become a Pea hen. Ma Parvati came to Mayiladuthurai and did a Penance. Satisfied with the penance of ma Parvati Lord Shiva also took the form of Peacock and danced Mayura thandavam before her. Ma Parvati was restored to her original form. Hence Lord Shiva is praised as "Mayuranathar",

The special celebration will be,  Mayilammai worship during Aippasi Peruvizha, Kandar Sashti in the month Vaikasi.

Brahmotsavam in the month Vaikasi ( May – June ), Thula Snanam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ), Laksha deepam on the last Friday in the month Aadi Month ( July – Aug ) and all Hindu Festivals like, Navaratri in the month Purattasi ( Aug – Sept), Maha Sivaratri in Masi ( Feb – March ), Annabhishekam in the month  Aippasi ( Oct – Nov )  and monthly pradoshams.

Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple / வேதபுரீஸ்வரர் கோவில், தேரழுந்தூர் / Therazhundur / Thiruvazhunthur, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 155th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam  and 38th sthalam on the north side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. During ancient times this place was called as Santhanaranyam with sandal wood trees.


In Periyapuranam Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirunallam. In this he registers that Therazhundur temple was a mada koil/ temple. But now the temple is on the ground level, may be brought down during renovation, by the Chozhas.

Some of the Salient features of this temple are...
The temple is facing west with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy ( Medha Dakshinamurthy ), Lingothbavar, Brahma and Chathurbhuja Durgai. 

In prakaram Sri Madeswarar on the left and Ambal Sannathi on the right. Ashta Dikku Thisaipalakaa’s paintings and Stucco dwarapalakas.
In the inner prakaram Subramaniar, Navagrahas, Kshethra Lingam, Kadambavaneswarar, Valanchuzhi Vinayagar, Kaveri Ashta dikpalakas in painting, Stucco dwarapalakas, Agasthiyar and Chandikeswarar. In Navagrahas except Suriyan others are facing Suryan and Suryan is facing west.

ARCHITECTURE
A Vesara Vimana is over the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum antarala and artha mandapam. The artha mandapam is of Vavval nethi type. A Moat is around the sanctum, may be due to rise of ground level.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar, has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original Mada temple was existed before 7th Century, may be built by Ko Chengat Chozha. Latter the same was reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period  and further extended during Vijayanagara period.

As per the inscriptions this place was called as Jayankonda Chozhavalanattu Thiruvazhunthur nattu Thiruvazhunthur and Lord Shiva was called as Thiruvazhunthur Udayar and Thiruvazhunthur Udayar Thirumadamudaya Nayanar.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s inscription records his meikeerthi as Thiribhuvana Chakravarthi Maduraiyum, Eezhamum, Karuvoorum, Pandyan Mudithalaiyum koNdu Veerabhishekam and Viajayabhishekam panniyarulina Thiribhuvana Veerathevan and Maduraiyum Karuvoorum Eezhamum Pandyam mudithalaiyum kondaruliya Sri Chozha Kerala thevan – மதுரையும், ஈழமும், கருவூரும் பாண்டியன் முடித்தலையும் கொண்டு வீராபிசேகமும் விஜயாபிசேகமும் பண்ணியருளின திரிபுவன வீரத்தேவன் ….  & சேர கேரளத்தேவன்.....  

One of the inscription records the endowment of thirumanjanam of Lord Shiva for which water was brought from river Kaveri. Donations was made for the same. 

On 23rd June 1999, maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted after renovations.

LEGENDS
Vedas, Devas, Ashta dikpalakas, worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

When Agasthiyar was worshiping Lord Shiva of this temple, with out knowing a Deva was travelling on the sky in a Chariot, which disturbed Agasthiyar’s worship. So Agasthiyar  made the Deva's Chariot to ground. ( தேர் + அழுந்தூர் –தேரழுந்தூர் ). Hence this place is called as Therazhundur. He found that the sage Agasthiyar was worshiping Lord Shiva. He realized the reason why his Chariot got struck up and landed here. He prayed Agasthiyar and pardon him. Hence this place was called as Therazhundur.

Ambal ma Parvati’s marriage in is associated with many places around this temple / place. at Therazhundur ma Parvati to become a Cow and Maha Vishnu to play the role of shepherd. At Thirukozhambam ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva, to get rid of the Curse as Cow. At Thiruvaduthurai also Ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Cow. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Kokileswarar. At Thiruthuruthi ma Parvati came out of yagna conducted by the sage Bharata. Ma Parvati was brought up by the sage. At Ethirkolpadi Lord Shiva was welcomed as bridegroom by his father-in-law sage Bharata. The marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati took place at Thiruvelvikudi and at Thirumananjeri marriage darshan was given to all. 

It is believed that Lord Shiva as a Brahmin and taught Vedas under the sthala vruksha. Hence Lord Shiva is praised as Vedapureeswarar.

Vazhikatti Vinayagar temple is on the way to this this temple. When Thirugnanasambandar was on his way to this temple, at one point he couldn’t decide in which way to proceed. So Vinayagar showed him the correct way, to this temple. Hence Vinayagar is called as Vazhikatti Vinayagar.

Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted in 10 days Brahmotsavam in the month Chithirai ( April – May ),  Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Avani ( Aug – Sep ), Navaratri in the month Purattasi ( Sep – Oct ), Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – Nov ),  Thiru Karthigai in the month Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ), Maha Shivaratri and Suriya Pooja in the month Masi ( Feb – March ) and every month pradosham.

On Mayiladuthurai to Kumbakonam – get down at Moovalur Check post and from there   5 kM from main road.
Town bus is available from Mayiladuthurai  and Kumbakonam. ( Route No 33). Can also come from Kuttalam by auto or Taxi.
The temple is about 5 KM off from Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai main road, 6.3 KM from Kuthalam, 8.5 KM from Thiruvaduthurai, 13 KM from Mayiladuthurai,  29 KM from Kumbakonam, 71 KM from Thanjavur and 283 KM from Chennai.

Sri Ukthavedeeswarar Temple / Sri Uktha Vedeeswaraswamy Temple / Thiruthuruthi / Kuthalam, உக்தவேதீஸ்வரர் கோயில், குத்தாலம், Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 154th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 37th Sthalam on the south side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This place was once called as Thiruthuruthi ( a protruding land between two rivers – like Thittai ) and now called as Kuttalam. This is one of the Nalvar Paadal Petra Shiva temples, ie Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Sundarar and Manickavasagar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.


In Periyapuranam, Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Therazhundur ( Mada Koil ..?).

Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Sundarar, Manickavasagar, Ayyadigal kadavarkon and Vallalar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. Thirugnanasambandar and Sundarar has sung hymns combining both Thiruthuruthi and Thiruvelvikudi. In that they mentions Lord Shiva with Uma will be at Thiruthuruthi during day time and during night at Thiruvelvikudi. Sundarar in his hymns that, requests Lord Shiva to relieve him from a decease. Latter Sundarar had taken a dip in the temple tank and got relieved from the decease, as instructed by Lord Shiva.

Some of the important features of this temple are.......
The temple is facing east with a 5 tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are near the sthala vruksham ( Ukthala maram ). In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar with Brahma and Maha Vishnu on both sides, Agasthiyar, Pichadanar, Brahma and Durgai.

In prakaram Thunaivantha Vinayagar, Arumugar sitting on his Vahana Peacock with his consorts Sri Valli Devasena, Valanchuzhi Vinayagar, Murugan, Natarajar, Viswanathar, Saptarishis, 63var, Nalvars ( In that Sundarar is with Paravai Nachiyar ), Pancha Lingas, Navagrahas, Mangala Saneeswaran, Bhairavar, Maha lakshmi ( stucco ) and Suriyan. Succo Images of Lord Shiva & Parvati’s marriage is on the back side of the sanctum Sanctorum.

The 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Lord muruga of this temple.

ARCHITECTURE
Ambal is in a separate temple with separate 3 tier Rajagopuram. The sanctum Sanctorum is with sanctum, antarala, artha mandapam and mukha mandapam.




HISTORY & INSCRIPTIONS
Since Nalvar has Sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple was existed before 7th Century. Latter the same was reconstructed with stone during Chozha period and expanded during Pandyas and Vijayanagaras period.

As per the inscriptions this place was mentioned as “Veenguneerthuruthi” and Kalyanalaya and Lord Shiva was called as Veenguneer Thiruthuruththiyudaya Mahadevar, Udayar Sonnavararivar, ThirukaRRali Mahadevar.

The Chozhas and Vijayanagarathar’s period inscriptions records the lands gifted as Irayili and purchase of lands, and gave permission to collect the taxes, etc. 

Rajendra Chozha-I’s, 5th reign inscription records the endowment of feeding of Shiva devotees, to get victory in the war for which money was gifted to this temple Thiruvazhunthur Nattu Veenguneer Thiruthuruthi Sonnavararivar temple. The same King’s 15th reign year inscription records a land was sold to construct a Thirumadam.

Kulothunga Chozha-III’s period inscription records an order of KuRRalamudayan Ishbathevan Vikka Vinayagar alias Jayadarappallavaraiyar to a certain Kavanurudayan asking him to re enter the tax-remission register 4 veli of Land which had been included in the brahmadeya granted by him in to reallot the 2 veli land to the temple of Vikrama Sozhiswaramudayar and two to the brahmanas. Of the land found in excess in the survey, one Veli of land was to be allotted as Thirumanattukani to the same temple.

Rajendra Chozha-I’s 9th reign year inscription starts with his meikeerthi, records the sale of land and house site by the sabha, of Kanakkaiyur alias Kamakkamangalam, in Peravur Nadu in Uyyakondarvalanadu, to the temple of Mahadeva of Vingunir Thiruthuruthiin Thiruvazhundur nadu for 72 Kasu inclusive of the Capital, for the payment of Taxes by the sabha on behalf of the temple. The same Kings 8th reign inscription records the sale of ½ veli land ( made tax free ), by the sabha to the Thirukkarrali Mahadevar of Thiruthuruthi, for 45 Kasu.

Rajendra Chozhas-I’s 5th reign year inscription records the endowment of 25 Kasu by Venkadan Adavallan, a merchant of Gangaikonda Chozhapuram, for feeding the Sivayoginis during midday from the interest. The amount was deposited to the Siva brahmins of the temple. 

Rajendra Chozha-III’s  15th year inscription records the sale of two adjacent house sites measuring 3 kol and 9 kol east to west, with a depth of 17 Kol situated in the north side of the Tirumadaivilakam of of the temple of TiruchchattimuRRam Udayar at Kil Pazhayari alias Rajarajapuram, in Kulothunga Chozha Valanadu to a matha / mutt at that place, belonging to the lineage of Meyanasivar for 700 Kasu by the temple of Sonnavararivar.  

The Vijayanagara King Krishna Devarayar period ( Saka 1440 ie 1518 CE ) inscription records the gift of taxes collected equivalent to 90 pon ( Gold ). The same was gifted on Mamangam / Maha magha. This records as Sarvamanya gift of the taxes Jodi, sulavari, Kallanai, Nattu Kaanikkai, rayavarttanai  and avasara varttanaiamounting to 90 pon, and due to the King from Merkaveri- Maganai in favour of the temple of Sonnavareeswarar at Tiruthururthi Kuthalam on a representation made to him by Karanikam Vasavarasar, son of Somarasar of ThiruppeyyaRRur in Eyil nadu, a division of Thondai mandalam. The amount was to be utilized for offering, Naivedyam and adornments, repairs and special festivals every month to the god. 

The Vijayanagara King Kampanna Udayar saka 1303 ie 1381 CE, inscription is found much damaged and records the taxes remission and draught prevailed at that time.

During 6th to 7th Century the river was flowing on both sides and on only one side. This is one of the 27 Temples which come under Administrative control of Dharmapuram Adheenam. Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 01st February 1960.


LEGENDS: 
The Sthala Vruksham is Ukthala / Uththala maram/ tree, hence this place is called as Uthalavanam which changed to the present name of Kuthalam. Uma, Varunan, Kali, sages Kasiban, Angirasan, Gauthamar, Vasistar, Bharatha, Markandeyar, Pulathiyar, Agathiyar worshiped the Lord Shiva of this temple.

When Ambal came to this temple and worshiped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva gave darshan and hold Ambal’s hand. Ambal prayed Lord Shiva and asked him to marry her with the permission of her father and mother so that they will be very happy. Lord Shiva replied that” we will abide the rules laid by us and marry you”. Hence Lord Shiva is called as “Sonnavaru arivar- சொன்னவாறு அறிவார்”. The form in which Lord Shiva came to Marry Ambal is called as “Manavala nathar – மணவாள நாதர்”.  Lord Shiva came with Vedas as Padukas – foot wear, Umbrella as Uthala Tree. So Lord Shiva’s Paduka is under the Sthala Vruksham Ukthala Tree. On the opposite is Ambal as “Narunsanthilamulai Ammai- நறுஞ்சாந்திள முலையம்மை. The Vinayagar who came as escort to Ambal is called as “Thunaivantha Vinayagar”.  Stucco image is on back side of Sanctum.

When Sundarar was suffering from a skin decease, he was directed to take a dip in the Padmatheertham and worship Lord Shiva. After taking dip in the theertham, Sundarar was relieved from the decease. In, Another version, Sundarar was directed to consume the leaves of the Ukthala Tree. After consuming /eating sthala viruksha leaves, he was relieved from the decease. Sthala vruksham is Uthala tree/maram and it was told that there is no such tree available in the world. The tree has got lot of medicinal properties. 

Ambal ma Parvati’s marriage is associated with many places around this temple / place. At Therazhundur Lord Shiva cursed ma Parvati to become a Cow and Maha Vishnu to play the role of shepherd. At Thirukozhambam ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva, to get rid of the Curse as Cow. At Thiruvaduthurai also Ma Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Cow. Hence Lord Shiva is called as Kokileswarar. At Thiruthuruthi ma Parvati came out of yagna conducted by the sage Bharatha. Ma Parvati was brought up by the sage. At Ethirkolpadi Lord Shiva was welcomed as bridegroom by his father-in-law sage Bharatha. The marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati took place at Thiruvelvikudi and at Thirumananjeri marriage darshan was given to all. 



POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ), Panguni Uthiram in the month Panguni ( March – April ), Vinayagar Chathurthi in the month Aavani ( Aug – Sep ), On all Mondays ie Somavarams in the moth Karthigai ( Nov – Dec ) and on monthly pradoshams.

This place Kuthalam is on the bus route from Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai.
The temple is about 1 KM off from Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai main road, 6 KM from Thiruvaduthurai, 11 KM from Mayiladuthurai, 27 KM from Kumbakonam, 66 KM from Thanjavur and 300 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kuthalam ( 1.6 KM ) and Railway Junction is Mayiladuthurai.
