Hara elements on the facia of the cave
Adi Varaha Rock Cut
Cave Temple is one of the Living temples of Mamallapuram group of monuments.
This is on the South west of Mahishasuramardhini Rock cut Cave Mandapam. This
cave is with a mukha mandapa built at a latter date. Usually this Adi Varaha
Rock Cut Cave will be kept opened only during pooja hours and the time is unpredictable. Eventhough the cave is excavated for Shiva, now a stucco image of
Maha Vishnu’s one of the avatar Varaha with Bhoodevi is in the sanctum
sanctorum. The ardha mandapam has the beautiful Sculpture panels of The Pallava King
Simha Vishnu. Mahendra Varman with his wives, Shiva as Gangadhara, Maha Vishnu with
Adishesan and Durgai.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original Pallava
Grantha inscription records this cave was excavated for Shiva and is cursed
that who do not follow Ruda ( Siva ) is cursed 6 times. But the lattest
inscription records this Rock Cut Cave Temple as “Parameswara Varaha Vishnu
Gruham”.
The
inscription details on the floor…
The Pallava grantha inscription on the floor of
Varaha mandapa states that “Six times Cursed be those, in whose, hearts does
not dwell Rudra ( Siva ), the deliverer from the walking on the evil path”.
One more inscription, here,
belongs specifically to the eighth century reign of the Pallava king,
Nandivarman-II (in his 65th regnal year!). It is in Tamil. What is significant is
that it contains the earliest inscriptionalreference to the town as ‘Mamallapuram’.
In Sanskrit, this would be ‘Mahamallapuram’. ‘Mahamalla’ (‘Great Wrestler’) is
the best known title of the Pallava king, Narasimha-I.
The inscription, one, to the upper right of
the sanctum, belonging to the same period as the ‘royal
labels’, lists the ten major avatars of Vishnu. In this version, they are:
[Matsya… Kurmo
Var]aha[sca] Narasimha (Sca) Vamana[h] |
Ramo Rama[sca] Rama[sca]
Buddha[h] Kalki ca te dasa ||
The ten avatars listed are:
Fish, Tortoise, Boar, Man-lion,Dwarf, Rama (Parasurama), Rama (Ramachandra),
Rama (Balarama), the Buddha, and Kalki.
The Pallava King and the Queens.. This panel belongs to Pallava King. The
inscription above the panel reads as “Sri
Simha Vishnu Pothraathiraja”, hence the King is presumed as Simha Vishnu.
He is sitting on the throne, in sukasana posture. He looks with broad chest. His
right hand is in Chin mudra, which denotes that he attained atma gnanam. He is with greeda makuda and wearing kundalas in the ears and a mala on his neck. He is
not wearing no rich ornaments, which identify him as a King.
The Queens are shown
with clothes and looks elegant. They wears padra Kundalam and KaraNda makudas.
One of the Queen is shown with a Chain on her neck.
The Pallava King and his Queens ( an another Panel )... The inscription above the panel records as “Mahendra Pothrathi
Raja”. Hence it is presumed that, the King as Mahendra Varman. Ornaments are
shown on his neck and ears ( Padra Kundalam ). The Queens are on his left side.
The King holds the hands of a Queen and pointing the finger towards the temple. The queens are
with shy smiling face and the Queen’s expressions are expecting the Darshan of
the temple.
Shiva as Gangadhara... This panel is on the north side. Standing in samabanga posture
with right hand in abhaya hastam and left hand is in Kadi hastam. The top right
hand is holding a strand of hair to let Ganga to flow slowly. The Ganga is
shown in the form of a lady in anjali hastam and slowly decending to the earth
through the strand of Shiva’s hair. Shiva is wearing a cloth yagnopaveetha and
a snake is tied on the hip. Shiva is shown with a beautiful smile on his face.
Maha Vishnu… Maha Vishnu looks
majestic with 4 hands, holds Changu and Chakra in the upper hands and lower
right hand is in abhaya hastam and left hand is in kadi hastam. Two devotees
are in anjali hastam in kneeled position.
An image with a serpent over the head is adjacent to this Maha Vishnu
panel. Considering the serpent over his head, he must be adhiseshan.
SankaraNarayan Panel
Durgai…. Durga panel is on the east side wall of the
ardha mandapam. Durga is standing in three banga posture on Mahishasuran’s head
with 8 arms, holding various weapons and a parrot. This Durga panel is little
different from the other panels available at Mamallapuram. She is looking slim
and elegant. She wears jada makudam, breast bands, yagnopaveetha, ornaments on
the neck and padra Kundala on the ears. Lion and Deer heads are shown on the
top corners of the panel. Two devotees are at her feet and two female guardians dressed similar to Durga are also in the panel.
Gajalakshmi Panel… Gajalakshmi
is sitting on a lotus pedestal. She is shown with two hands, holding lotus
flower. Wearinng ornaments on the neck, ears and Channaveeram like ornament.
Two ladies are holding pots of water. While the left side elephant is pouring water on Gajalikshmi, the right
side elephant is taking the pot from the hand of other lady. It is beautifully shown by the sculptor that
the pot is with the lady and Elephant’s trunk. The extreme ladies are holding
some thing may be basket with flowers.
