Mukunda Nayanar Temple / முகுந்த நாயனார் கோயில், மாமல்லபுரம் / Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Mukundanayanar Temple, one of the group of monuments of Mamallapuram a UNESCO Heritage site of Tamil Nadu is at the entrance of Mamallapuram, coming from Chennai, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit”, under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places - தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organised by SASTRA & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19^th March 2023.

 

This temple is facing east, about 8 feet below the ground level. This temple is very much different from the Pallava period sculptures and Temples constructed in Mamallapuram. This temple consists of sanctum sanctorum and an open mukha mandapam. The complete temple was constructed with stone from adhisthanam to sigaram. The Mukha mandapam is supported with two pillars / Indrakantha pillars/ fluted surfaces with simple capital or pothyal, may be given support during renovation.

This sanctum sanctorum is on a Pada bandha adhisthanam with three patta kumudam. A two tala nagara Vimanam & Dravida sigaram is on the sanctum sanctorum. Kalasam is missing. Hara elements are only in the first tala. 

Somaskandar Panel

This temple is dedicated to Shiva. A Shiva Lingam is in the Sanctum Sanctorum and a Somaskandar panel is on the back side wall of the Sanctum Sanctorum. In greeva koshtam, Uma sakithar, Dakshinamurthy, Yoga Narasimhar and Brahma. As per Kanchipuram mavatta Tholliyal Kaiyedu, the monkeys picking the lice at Arjuna’s Penance Panel belongs to this place, which was unearthed during excavation.

As per the Archaeological survey of India, this temple was constructed during Rajasimha’s period. As per the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department, an inscription records the name of Shiva of this temple as –“ThiruMukalippa mudayar- திருமுகலிப்பா முடையார்'”. During Chozha period, Shiva was called as "Mukalinathan"

முகுந்த நாயனார் கோயில்.

மாமல்லபுரத்தில் இருக்கும் இந்த முகுந்த நாயனார் கோயில், தமிழ்நாட்டில் UNESCO நிறுவனத்தால் அங்கீகரிகப்பட்ட மரபு சின்னங்களுள் ஒன்று. சென்னையில் இருந்து செல்லும் போது மாமல்லபுரம் ஊரின் ஆரம்பத்திலேயே உள்ளது. மாமல்லபுரத்தின் குடைவரைக் கோயில்கள், கட்டுமானக் கோயில்கள் மற்றும் சிற்பங்களை, ஒப்பிடும் போது இக்கோயில் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட தோற்றத்தில் காணப்படுகின்றது. கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ள இக்கோயில் கருவறையின் உட்புறச்சுவரில் சோமாஸ்கந்த மூர்த்தியின் உருவம் புடைப்புச் சிற்பமாகச் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. கருவறையினுள் லிங்கம் ஒன்றும் காணப்படுகிறது. சுவர்களிலும் தேவ கோட்டங்களிலும் சிற்பங்கள் ஏதும் காணப்படவில்லை. ஆனால் விமானத்தின் கிரீவத்தில் புடைப்புச்சிற்பங்களாக கிழக்கே உமாமகேசுவரர், தெற்கே தென்முகக் கடவுளான தட்சணாமூர்த்தி, மேற்கே யோக நரசிம்மர், வடக்கே நான்முகனான பிரம்மன் ஆகிய சிற்பங்கள் உள்ளன.

தமிழ்நாடு அரசுத் தொல்லியல் துறையால் கண்டறியப்பட்ட கல்வெட்டொன்றினால் இக்கோயில் 'திருமுகலிப்பா முடையார்' என்ற பெயர் பெற்றிருந்ததை அறியமுடிகிறது. சோழர் காலத்தில் 'முகலிநாதன்' என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் இக்கோயிலின் கிழக்குப் பகுதியில் புதைந்து கிடந்த, பேன் பார்க்கும் குரங்கின் சிற்பம் தற்போது 'அர்ச்சுனன் தவம்' அமைந்துள்ள பாறைச் சிற்பத்திற்கு அருகே வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
