Saptamatrikas / Seven Pidaris / சப்தமாதர்கள் தொகுப்பு, An UNESCO Heritage Site, Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Saptamatrikas  Group of Sculptures, one of the UNESCO Heritage monumnet at Mamallapuram, was a Part of “Mamallapuram Heritage Visit” under the title – “Known Mamallapuram, Unknown places - தெரிந்த மாமல்லபுரம், தெரியாத இடங்கள்” organised by SASTRA & Chithiram Pesuthada Groups on 19^th March 2023. This is one of the group of monuments of Mamallapuram a UNESCO Heritage site of Tamil Nadu.

This Pallava period Saptamatrikas group consists of Kaumari, Veerabhadra, Brahmi, Chamundi, Varahi, Maheswari, Vaishnavi and Maheswari.  Indrani is missing in this Group and Maheswari is repeated twice. Since there are two Maheswari Sculptures, these sculptures might have been brought from elesewhere and installed here.   Chamundi is sculpted like full sculpture, but the other saptamatrikas are in the form of bas reliefs. The vahanas of each saptamatrikas are engraved on the base, in the form of petroglyphs.

In this saptamatrikas group, Chamundi is with ferocious look and tallest sculpture. She wears ornaments on her neck, pretha kundala on her right ear and padra kundalam on the left ear. She also wears a skull mala, like yagnopaveetha.

இந்த பல்லவர் கால சப்தமாதர் தொகுதி தலசயன பெருமாள் கோயில் செல்லும் வழியில் இடது புறம் உள்ளது. இத்தொகுப்பில் கௌமாரி, வீரபத்திரர், பிராமி, சாமுண்டி, வாராகி, மகேஸ்வரி, வைஷ்ணவி, மற்றும் மகேஸ்வரி ஆகியோர் உள்ளனர். சப்தமாதர்களை அடையாளப்படுத்த, அவர்கள் கைகளில் இருக்கும் ஆயுதங்கள் தவிர, அவர்களுடைய வாகனங்களும் கீரல் வடிவில் செதுக்கி உள்ளனர். மகேஸ்வரி இரண்டு சிற்பங்கள் இருப்பதால், மாமல்லபுரத்தைச் சுற்றி உள்ள இடங்களில் இருந்து இந்த சப்தமாதர் தொகுதி கொண்டு வந்து இருக்கலாம் என்பது ஆய்வாளர்களின் கருத்து. இத்தொகுப்பில் உள்ள ஏனைய சிற்பங்கள் புடைச்சிற்பமாக இருக்க, சாமுண்டி மட்டும் முழு உருவத்துடன் செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

இத்தொகுப்பில் சாமுண்டி அளவில் பெரியதாகவும், முகத்தில் ரௌத்ர பார்வையுடன் காணப்படுகின்றார். கழுத்தில் மாலையும், வலது காதில் பிரேத குண்டலம் மற்றும் இடது காதில் பத்ர குண்டலமும் அணிந்துள்ளார். யக்னோபவீத / பூநூல் அமைப்பில், மண்டைஓடு மாலை அணிந்து உள்ளார்.
