Sri Agastheeswarar Temple, Pozhichalur and Sri Arkeeswarar Temple at Pammal, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

On the 14th Sunday thought of Visiting my friend at Shankar Nagar, Pammal,  Chennai. Since Sri Agastheeswarar temple at Pozhichalur is very near to his house, so went to Shiva temple first. After darshan I had the opportunity of visiting another Shiva Temple at Pammal, actually, the temple is called Sri Suriyamman Temple with a big tank in front. The details and the photos taken are uploaded in this post.

This temple is believed to be one of the Thevara vaippu sthalam sung by  Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal.

The important details of the temple are....
There is no rajagopuram and the temple is facing east with an entrance arch at the north side. The moolavar vimanam is of Gajaprishta type. In koshtam Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu in place of Lingothbavar, Brahma, Vishnu, and Durga.



In mandapam Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Bhairavar, Navagrahas, and Saneeswarar ( Facing moolavar ). In the outer prakaram sannadhi for  Anjaneyar, Ganapathy, Naagars and Shiva lingam with Nandhi under a tree. Ambal is in a separate sannadhi facing south.


ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with three patta kumudam. A 3 tala Gajabirushta vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. There are no many stucco images on the Vimanam except in the koshtas. 



HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
As per Kanchipuram Mavatta Varalaru's book written by Thirgnanasambandan, the original temple was constructed during Kulothunga Chozha-I in 1076 CE. There are 3 inscriptions found in this temple and another two inscriptions are in Chennai Museum. As per the inscription Shiva was called Sri Arjuneeswaramudayar. This place was called Vellerumpakkam alias Sridevi Chathurvedi Mangala Pozhichalur.

Kulothunga Chozha period inscription records the gift of land for worship at Vellerumpakkam alias Sridevi Chathurvedi Mangala Pozhichalur, Sri Arjuneeswarar. This place was between Manarpakkam ( now called Manapakkam ) and Kulapakkam ( now called Kolapakkam ). The land was gifted as thevadhanam to Thirukamakottamudaya nachiar. 

The Same Kings' period inscription mentions the PattikooRRam, Karthigai pachchai Taxes.

The Vijayanagara King Achutharaya's period ( 1530 CE ) inscription records that Kala Vaiyappan renovated this temple on behalf of Venkatapathy Raya on 19.05.1609 and made to continue the poojas. Ellappan was also gifted as thevadhanam (maybe land ) to this temple.
 

LEGENDS
It is believed that, the name of this place Pugazh Chozha Nallur has become Pozhichalur. Shri Shiva gave darshan to Sri Agasthiyar. Saneeswarar worshiped Lord Shiva to get rid of the sin-cursed due to troubles, hardships & ill effects which he gave to people. This is the Shanieswarar sthalam in Thondai Nadu and is famous next to Thirunallar also called Vada Thirunallar.

SRI ARKESHWARA AND SRI SURIYAMMAN TEMPLE PAMMAL
This temple Amman Sri Sakthi Suryamman is famous in this area near to the market of Pammal.

Some of the important details are...
The temple is facing east with an entrance. Balipeedam and Nandhi are in front of the sanctum sanctorum under a mandapam. Moolavar vimanam is of square shape. In koshtam Narthana Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Vishnu Durgai.

In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Chandikeswarar, Bairavar, Saneeswarar, Navagrahas, Valli Devasena Sri Subramaniar, Kasi Viswanathar and Vishalakshi, Anjaneyar.

While digging for the construction of the mandapam they excavated the murtis of Vinayagar, Somaskandar, ( Shiva and Amman), Manikkavasakar, Thirunavukkarasar, Thirugnanasambandar, Chandikeswarar, Sivakami Amman, Amman 2 nos, Sri Sakthi Suriyamman is in a separate Temple facing north with temple tank in front.

It was claimed that the temple is very old and there are no inscriptions to prove the age.
