Sri Vaidyanathar Temple / Vaitheeswarar Temple / Vaitheeswaran Koil - வைத்தீஸ்வரன் கோயில் - அங்காரகன் கோவில், Pullirukkuvelur, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 70^th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 16^th sthalam on the north side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This place was called as Pullirukkuvelur and the same is called as Vaitheeswaran Koil. This is a Sevvai sthalam and one of the Navagraha Sthalams in and around Kumbakonam.

As per PeriyaPuranam Sekkizhar mentions that Thirugnanasambandar after worshiping Lord Shiva of ThirukkaNNar Koil, came to this Sri Vaidyanathar Temple.

Some of the important features of this temple are as follows….

The temple is facing east with a  5 tier Rajagopuram ( 5 nos )  with Temple tank. Two ( Silver and Gold ) Dwajasthambas, balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of sanctum sanctorum. In sanctum moolavar is of Swayambhu, little small. Maragatha Linga is also there, pooja will be done during early morning. Dwarapalakas are big at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum with Jadayu.  

In prakaram Ramar, Jadayu, Subramaniyar, Suryan and Angaragan worshiped Shiva Lingas.

In the outer parakaram Vinayagar, Kiruthigai abhisheka mandapam, Sri Chella Muthukumaraswamy, Adipoora Amman, Ashta Lakshmi’s paintings on the wall, Gajalakshmi, Nataraja Sabha with Sivakami, Shiva Linga, Sahasra Lingam, Navagrahas ( Navagrahas are on the back side of the sanctum in a single row ), Bhairavar, Ramar Jadayu, Subramaniyar, Suryan, Suryan, Angarahan worshiped Lingas, Danvanthiri, Subramaniyar, Ayyanar, 63 var with Jadayu procession deities, Urchava deities of Vinayagar, Valamchuzhi Vinayagar and Somaskandar.

Ambal Thaiyal Nayagi is in a separate sannadhi facing east in standing posture. Since Ambal came with thaila pot along with Lord Shiva, Ambal is also called as Thailambal. 

The 15^th Century Arunagirinathar has sung hymns in praise of Sri Chella Muthukumaraswamy of this temple. Also Muthukumarasamy Pillaithamizh, Selva Muthukumarasamy Thiruvarutpa Ksheththira Kovai Pillaithamizh praises Lord Murugan of this temple.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a maha mandapam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might be existed before 7^th Century. The same was reconstructed during Chozha period and extended during Marathas / Vijayanagara’s period. 

In Saka 1682 ir 1770 CE during Thulajamaharaja period renovation was carried out with stone.

In Saka 1689 ie 1767 CE Rajamaharajar (Rayar .. Vijayanagara...? ), period  renovation was carried out by Dharumapura Adheenam Muthukumarasamy Thambiran.

Sakam 1802 ie 1880 CE, a Golden Dwajasthamba was installed.

Sakam  1814 ( 1892 CE ), Renovation was done and kumbabhishekam was also conducted by the Nattukkottai Nagarathars. The temple is under the administration of Dharumapura Adheenam of Thiru Kayilaya Prambara.

LEGENDS

The Lord of this temple was worshiped by Pul ( Jadayu), Irukku ( Rig Veda ), Vel Murugan, Oor ( Suryan). Hence this place is called as Pullirukkuvelur. It is believed that Bhairavar, Veerabhadra, Karpaka Vinayagar and Kali  guards this place from four sides.. This is in the form of a Tamil Song..

This is one of the Navagraha sthalam and people affected with Angaraka - Chevvai – Mars, dosha worships Lord Shiva of this temple by doing Abhishek and offer Rice flour, turmeric powders, Cosmetic powder, oil, milk, curd, Vibhuti, Rose water, Coconut, Panchamirtha ( mixture of 5 fruits with honey, sugar ), lime fruit, sandal, etc,.

Jadayu Kundam- it is believed that Jadayu was killed when he tried to stop Ravana by abducting Sita. As per his request Rama did Jadayu’s last rites at vibhuti kundam also called as Jadayu Kundam. The Eagle kings Sampathi & Jadaya, Vedas, Lord Muruga worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. In Thirugnanasambandar hymns, the same is mentioned as

``தள்ளாய சம்பாதி சடாயென்பார் தாமிருவர்

புள்ளானார்க் கரையனிடம் புள்ளிருக்கு வேளூரே``

It is believed that Lord Shiva will cure the deceases caused  due to Manthiram, Thanthra, Black magic, etc, Hence called as Vaidyanathar ( Doctor).

It is believed that, the oil supplied in the temple as praisad will cure skin ailments, boils, pimples and scars. And it is believed that Dhanvantri siddha attained Jeeva samadhi in this place. The devotees offer Punugu ( get from a type of Cat ), Karpooram / Chambor, sandal Paste, lime, Rose water, flowers, garlands and milk rice to Muthukumaraswamy’s artha jama pooja. The Sandal paste and Vibhuti offered as naivedyam at Muthukumaraswamy sannadhi has many medicinal properties, which was experienced by the devotees. Also it is believed that Murugan obtained the Vel / spear to kill Soorapadman from Ambal Thaiyal Nayagi.

People pray Lord Shiva and Ambal Thaiyal Nayagi  for mental peace, relief, Hardships, Employment opportunities, progress in trade, progress in profession, promotions, wedding, Child boons and relief from the adverse planet aspects.

Apart from Regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Mahashivaratri, 10 days festival during Thai ( Jan – Feb ) for Selva Muthukumaraswamy, 28 days Brahmotsavam with Abhishekam and Panchmurti procession in Panguni, 6 days Kandar Sashti festival in  Aippasi ( October November ), Vaikasi abhishekam, mandala abhishekam and Monthly Karthigai.
