The
visit to this Sri la Sri Mahan Subbaiah Swamigal and Appaiya Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi Temples in Appar Nagar, Tiruvottiyur
was a part of “Hero Stones and Siddhars of Tiruvottiyur Visit”, on 11th
September 2022. This visit was mainly
focused on the Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples of Tiruvottiyur.
Most
of the Siddhar Jeeva samadhis in Chennai belong to Siddhars who migrated from
various parts of Tamil Nadu and other states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,
etc,. The Siddhar Samadhis in and around Thiruvottiyur are closely linked with
the 11th Century Pattinathar and 19th Century Vallalar
alias Ramalinga Adigalar. Even though the Siddhars attained mukti, away from
Tiruvottiyur, they were brought to Tiruvottiyur and kept in Samadhi considered a holy place.
Siddhar: Sri Subbiah Swamigal
and Appaya Swamigal
Some
of the Salient features of this jeeva Samadhi are...
The
Jeeva Samadhi temple faces east with two Samadhis on which Two Shiva
Lingas are installed on a square Avudaiyar. A balipeedam and a Rishabam are
installed in front of the room. The ceiling of the Samadhi is supported with 4
stone pillars. A Madras terrace if proved on the ceiling.
HISTORY
For
the past 200 years, this Thiruvottiyur was converted into living place. Due to
this many Siddhar Samadhi temples were either destroyed or converted as houses.
The remaining Jeeva Samadhis are squeezed between houses.
During the 1980’s Maragathambal bought land and She didn’t know that Sri-la-Sri Subbaiah
Swamigal’s Jeeva Samadhi with a vimana existed on the land she bought. The Jeeva Samadhi was in a single room.
They lived for more than 30 years without knowing that the structure was a Jeeva
Samadhi temple. During the 2016 Vardha cyclone, most of the people living on the
seashore vacated their houses and went somewhere. But the descendent of Maragathambal,
Mr. T R Marirajan, an Ayyappa Devotee remained there. In 2018, after he returned
from Sabarimala, about 20 people came and inquired Marirajan, where about the
Subbiah Swamigal’s Jeeva Samadhi. He said, he didn’t know Jeeva Samadhi, but there
is a temple-like structure is there on the back side of his house. The 20
people inspected and confirmed that it was a Sri-la-Sri Subbaiah Swamigal and
his disciple Appayya Swami’s jeeva Samadhis. The Jeeva Samadhis were cleaned and
damages were rectified.
It
is believed that Subbaiah Swamigal belongs to Andhra Pradesh and was born at either Chittoor
or Puttur. The real name of Subbaiah Swamigal was Thiruvenkadam. He turned to
Siddhar at a young age and came to Tiruvottiyur. He had learned and practiced “Koodu Vittu Koodu Paithal –
detaching the soul from own body and enters in another body”, Navakanda Yoga,
conversing in Paribhasha, etc,. These are known through some indications and
proof was not obtained. Initially, Swamigal was called Subbai and the same has been
corrupted to Subbiah. He lived during the same period as great Siddhars
like, Mouna Swamigal, Appar Swamy, Chidambaram Periya Swamigal, Suraikai
Siddhar, Sachidananda Swamigal, etc,. He had written many philosophical books.
It
is believed that Sri Subbiah Siddhar was the descendant of Karuvur Siddhar. His
Guru pooja was calculated as the Thai month Uthradam Nakshatra day. 4th
year of Guru Pooja was celebrated in Thai month in 2004, after rediscovery.
The
rediscovery of Jeeva Samadhis was celebrated, in which Chennai District
Collector also participated. We couldn’t get any photograph of him. Further, he
helped economically weaker people. Hence he was not known to the outside world and
his fame was not spread much. He had done many miracles even after attaining
Jeeva Samadhi. He helped a girl to join Sathyabama Nursing College without
payment of fees after worshiping at Jeeva Samadhi.
APPAYYA SWAMIGAL
Both
Jeeva Samadhis are in the same room under the mandapam. It was told that
Appaiya Swamigal was the disciple of Subbaiah Swamigal. Further details are
known.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas and Abhishekams, special poojas are conducted on Pournami,
Amavasya, Pradosham, and Guru Pooja day on the Thai month Uthradam Nakshatra day.
