Sri Semathamman Temple / அருள்மிகு சேமாத்தம்மன் கோயில், Perambur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Semathamman Temple at Perambur ( presently with Ayanavaram ) was a part of the “Shiva, Vishnu, Amman, and Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temples Visit” – in Aminjikarai and Perambur on 09th October 2022.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple is facing west with a 3 tier Rajagopuram. Stucco Dwarapalakis are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Amman is in sitting posture with abhaya varada hastam. But Utsavar is like Kali with Trishul, with a ferocious look.  In Kostam Dakshinamurthy, Vaishnavi, and Durgai.

In praharam Kala bairavar, Valampuri Vinayagar, Nagaras, Navagrahas, Anjaneyar, Nagavalli Amman, Nagars, Agasthiyar ( a munivar ),  Sri Valli Devasena Murugan, Nava Veerars and Two Ammans. 

ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was reconstructed in recent years with bricks. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a upanam and Padabanda adhistanam. The adhistanam consists of jagathy, silambu kumudam and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedika. Pilasters are with kalasam, kudam, mandi, palakai, veerakandam and Vettu pothyal.  The prastaram consists of valapi, Kapotam.  Nasi kudus are in the kapotam. An eka tala salakara Vimanam with 3 kalasas are on the bhoomi desam. Amman and Saraswati are in the greeva kostam. 

The mandapa pillars have stucco images of Ashta Lakshmi. Murugan and Valli Devasena Subramanya sannidhis are built in Dravidian style from adhistanam to sigaram.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Even though the temple is in Ayanavaram at present, it was originally in Perambur. The place name is written as Perambur, in the inscriptions and name board.  

The inscription was recorded in – Chennai Ma Nagara Kalvettukkal- சென்னை மாநகர கல்வெட்டுக்கள் Published by Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. கெங்காதர மேஸ்திரி என்பார் சேமாத்தம்மன் கோயிலில் வாசற்படி கட்டிவைத்ததைக் குறிக்கிறது.

The 1(7)50 CE inscription on the east wall of the sanctum Sanctorum ( after reconstruction of the temple this inscription stone is missing )  records that the entrance steps are constructed by Gengadhara Mestri. The Original inscription reads as....

Nagathamman Temple Ashta bandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 5th September 2000.

Nagavalli Amman Mandapam was built by K Loganatha Chettiar and his sons of Birundha Theatre and stores.





LEGENDS
This is a Grama Devatha temple. It is believed that this Amman Guards the Village from all the deceases and evil forces, which come from outside.  

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, on all the days in Aadi month and Navaratri. During Navratri, on the 10th day, the Utsava murti will be taken in procession with the bursting of crackers to Ayanavaram and Perambur and it will take 3 days to come back to the temple.

The temple will be kept open between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

The temple is about 200 meters from Corporation Community Hall, Jamalia,  500 meters from Perambur Railway Station, 6 KM from Chennai Central Railway Station, and 11 KM from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.
The nearest Railway station is Perambur.
