Sri Sundara Varadharaja Perumal Temple / Sri Varadaraja Perumal Kovil / ஸ்ரீவரதராஜ பெருமாள் கோவில், Vadakkupattu, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sundara Varadharaja  Perumal Temple was made on 05th October 2022, along with Archaeological Survey Of India ( ASI ) Excavation sites at Vadakkupattu in Kanchipuram District.  This is one of the Maha Vishnu Temples under the Control of Ahobila Mutt. Some of the salient features of this temple are…
The temple faces east with an entrance arch. Stucco images of Garuda, Changu, and Chakra with thiruman are on the entrance arch. Deepa sthambam, balipeedam and Garudan are in front of the mukha mandapam. Moolavar Sundara Varadharaja Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Moolavar is in a standing posture. The upper hand is holding Sangu and Chakra and lower right hand is in abhaya hastam and the lower left hand is in uru hastam. The Utsava Murtis are in front of Moolavar along with Adikesava Perumal also called Prachina Perumal. The other murtis are Adivan Satakopan ( the first preceptor - Azhagiya Singar or Jiyar of Akobila mutt of the 13th to 14th Century ), Ramanujar, and Vedanta Desikar.

In Praharam thayar Lakshmi Sundaravalli is in a separate temple facing east. The Temple tank Kamala Pushkarani is on the back side of the temple.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam, maha mandapam and a mukha mandapam.  The sanctum sanctorum was built with stone from adhistanam to Prastaram. The Super Structure Vesara Vimanam was built with Bricks. A 3 tier Vimana is built on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Perumal’s various avatars are on the Tala and Greeva Kostas. There are no images in the Deva Kostas.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the temple is more than 500 years old and is being maintained by the Ahobila mutt.
Ashta Bandhana Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 23rd May 2004 after thirupani.





LEGENDS
As per the Legends, this place was ruled by the Nayakas Thimmappa Nayakka and Soorappa Nayaka. Since Thimmappa Nayaka does not have a Child, Perumal came into his dream and advised him to donate land to the Brahmins of this place. Accordingly, 24 acres of land were gifted to the Brahmins.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas as per Pancharatra agama, special poojas are conducted on Tamil New Year Day, Chitra Pournami, Avatara Utsavam in Vaikasi, Thiruvadipooram in Adi, Krishna Jayanthi in Avani, Ten days Utsavam for Thayar and Perumal in Purattasi, Deepaavali in Aippasi, Karthigai Deepam in Karthigai, Dhanur masa Utsavam,  for 30 days in Markazhi, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Krishna Jayanthi, Hanuman Jayanthi, and all important Vishnava festivals.

The temple will be kept open between 08.30 hrs to 10.30 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The Vadakkupattu is about 3 KM off Singaperumal Koil to Sriperumbudur Main Road Via Oragadam.
The temple is about 9 KM from Oragadam, 13.7 KM from Singaperumal Koil, 16.7 KM from Chengalpattu, and 58 KM from Chennai Central.
Nearest Railway Station is Singaprumal Koil.
