 24, September 2012
On 22nd and 23rd September 2012, I had undertaken my 3rd  yathra to Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal in and around Kumbakonam and this time Mayiladuthurai also. As usual reached Kumbakonam on 22nd morning from Chennai by bus. After taking bath at lodge, hired a taxi and started my yathra. I was able to cover 18 Shiva Temples and a Vishnu Temple ( Lord Krishna as Amruviappan,  one of 108 Divya desam at Therazhundur).

22-09-2012, SATURDAY.

First, I had been to THIRUVISANALLUR. After dharshan my plan was to go to Thiruthuthevankudi. Since the temple was scheduled to open only after 09.00 Hrs, skipped and went to the temple SENGANOOR ( Senganur ). The road was very bad, since the road is being used by bullock carts. After darshan at SENGANUR went to THIRUVOIPADI and THIRUPPANANDAL. Returned back once again to TIRUNDUDEVANKUDI. After completing darshan proceeded to THIRUMANGALAKUDI and  KANCHANOOR. Kanchanoor is one of the Navagraha sthalam, ie SUKRAN Sthalam. Lot of peoples throng this temple for darshan. Pooja is mainly conducted for Sukran. The Sukran sannadhi is in parallel to Shiva’s sannadhi. Then went to the temples THIRUKODIKAVALETHIRKOLPADI ( Melai Thirumanancheri ) and THIRUMANANCHERI  ( Keezhai Thirumanancheri). In the Kalyana Sundareswarar sannadhi, at Thirumanancheri, Ambal looks very cute with a beautiful smile on her face ( Naanam ). Tried our luck to have darshan at Thiruvelvikudi, but to our disappointment the temple was closed.

After lunch at Kuthalam returned back to THIRUVELVIKUDI and spend about 3 hours on the banks of Temple tank. It was an awesome and amazing  site to see the temple tank with water  and king fisher catching the fish. The temple was opened only at 17.30 Hrs, against opening time of 16.30 hrs. After dharshan went to the temple THIRU ANNIYUR ( Ponnur ), (The temple priest explained me in detail and allowed to take pictures. He asked me to spread the temple details, so that more peoples can visit to this temple), THIRU KORUKKAI ( Korkai/ Korukkai ) and THIRU NIDUR ( Nidur – a station on the train route). The dharshan at the last three temples, had with the   lamps / torch light and the prakarams were under the cover of darkness, due to power failure/ load shedding. Closed my  day’s darshan and returned back to lodge.

23-09-2012, SUNDAY.
Based on my previous yathra darshans experience, like to use the public transport to cover some more temples this time also.  First I went to the temple THIRUVADUTHURAI. After dharshan I came to know that the same  Gurukkal is doing pooja at THITUKKOZHAMBAM also. When I requested, Gurukkal for darshan, he asked his son to take me to the temple through his TVS 50 ( Kurukkal also offered me a Kumbakonam degree coffee). It was about 5 KM journey from Thiruvaduthurai  on a bumpy road and Gurukkal’s son dropped me back at the Thiruvalangadu bus stand. Since KUTHALAM is on the way to Mayiladuthurai, got down at Kuthalam and had the dharshan at Kuthalam. The temple is big and understands that temple authorities are preparing for the Kumbhabhishekam. Waited for the bus to THERAZHUNDUR for about 1.5 Hrs, finally hired a taxi for one way to Theruzhundur. The pooja was conducted by a Vishnu battachariyar at this shiva temple.  After darshan at Shiva temple, I also had the darshan of Lord Krishna ( Lord Krishna as Amuruviappan ),  which is on the opposite street of Shiva Sannadhi.

We know that there is a relationship between the temple at Thiruvaiyaru and nearby temples in connection with the marriage function of Sri Nandhi devar at Thirumazhapadi. Similarly  the marriage between Lord Shiva and Parvati  after separation due to pakadai/ Chokkattan  attam. This time Lord Vishnu was also involved

I couldn’t make visit to Pandanallur and Mayiladuthurai as planned ( Too greedy ). During my visit most of the temples were locked and the Gurukkals  are kind enough to open the temple for  my dharshan. I expressed my heartfelt thanks to all.

Sri Marundeeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ மருந்தீஸ்வரர் கோயில், Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. - PAADAL PETRA SHIVA STHALAM – THONDAI NADU.

 16, September 2012
25. MARUNDEESWARAR TEMPLE,
THIRUVAMIYUR

This is the 25th Padal petra Shiva Sthalam of Thondai Nadu. Once it was a south end  of Chennai city and now it is south part of Chennai City ( City expands ).

Even though I had been to this temple at Thiruvanmiyur many times, one of the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Naadu, this may be special darshan for me.  On 16th Sep 2012, I had a chance  to worship lord Shiva of this temple and also Sri Pamban Swamigal Jeeva Samadhi.   The jeeva Samadhi of Sri Pamban Swamigal is about 0.5 Km from this temple.

Moolavar    :  Sri Aushatheeswarar, Sri Maruntheesar,
                    Sri Paalvanna Naathar .
Consort      : Sri Thiripurasundarai, Sri Chokka nayagi,
                    Sri Sundara Nayagi.

Some of the special features  of this temple are….
There are two Rajagopuram on the east side, of which one is constructed in this 21 century  ( But the temple was constructed early 11th century ) and one  Rajagopuram on west side along East Coast Road..

The temple and moolavar are facing west. But we have  to go to main shrine through south side entrance after worshiping Thiyagarajar. The dwarapalakas. Dhandi and mundi are the not the normal sila roopam with gadha in their hands. Moolavar is swayambhu white in colour and scars of  Kamadhenu's leg  on moolavar, since Kamadhenu worshiped Lord Shiva. Only milk abhishekam is done to moolavar and the rest of the abhishekams are for avudayar only. In koshtam, Brahma, Durgai, Vishnu, Dhakshinamoorthy and Vinayagar. In the Prakaram Sannadhi for, Vinayagar, Naalvar, Gajalakshmi, Subramaniyar with Arunagirinathar, Natarajar, Shiva Lingams ( 108 ), Sri Unnamalai, Arunachaleswarar, Shiva on Rishabha vahana and 63 var images.

When we go round outer prakaram we can worship Vinayagar, Sthala vruksham with Nagars and Ambal. Ambal is in standing posture in a separate temple near the east side entrance facing south. There is no koshta moortham in the niches of Ambal temple. There is a image for Sukravaara Amman in the prakaram  facing west. Sarabeswarar pudai sirpam ( relief ) in one of the pillar of the Ambal temple is to be seen. Sri Subramaniar and Sri Vinayagar Sannidhis are facing east at the east side entrance. There is also a 4 pillar mandapam on the left side of the east entrance. In the south side wall, Rettai Vinayagar, Office, lecture hall and Gosala.

Between the east side Rajagopuras on the left side there is a Temple Tanks called Chithirai Kulam. Opposite to Chithirai kulam  there is cultural hall called Thiyagarajar kalai arangam. Out side of the temple, by the side of vehicle parking there is a another Temple tank with neerazhi mandapam at the centre.

There is a devotee called Appayatheekshithar used  to come for worship Lord Shiva from Velachery ( In older days it was called as Vethesnaery.) When he was not able to come near to the temple due to flood around, Lord Shiva himself turned to west and gave darshan to him.

Lord Shiva danced  and gave darshan to Valmiki Munivar. Lord Shiva taught the herbal medicine to Agasthiyar in this temple, hence Lord Shiva is called a Authastheesar or Maruntheesar ( in Tamil ).

Devars, Suryan, Bringi munivar worshiped lord of this temple.

Thirugnanasambandar and Appar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.

It is believed that Suryan worshiped lord Shiva during night, hence important      functions are held during night including kodiyetram.

Regular Vilakku pooja is conducted during Aadi month.

One of the latest inscription in front of Amman sannadhi says, a devote gifted a land with house to this temple and the income from the property should be used for this temple urchavam. If  any amount is not given, it is a Paavam equivalent  to extinguishing the deepam of moolavar Sannadhi. ( This shows the intense faith on this lord and the paavam and punyam )

Sri Devi Bhavani Amman Temple at Ramakrishna Nagar, West Velachery, Adambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

13, September 2012
This temple is at Ramakrishna Nagar, part of west Velachery. When we bought a piece of land to build our home during 1999, the temple was very small, a piece of land was allotted to this Amman. Once the total Ramakrishna Nagar was a paddy field which has got irrigation from the big round well. It was told that adjacent irrigation well will also be given to this temple by the old owner. Latter after filling up the well, the old owner became greedy and he had sold to some body.

In the mean time the resident want to upgrade this temple with Vimanam and Mandapam. The amman moortham was bought from Mahabalipuram and Stucco image work was carried out by sthapathis from Tirunelveli dist. The new owner of the land, ( The old well) raised a complaint with police that the temple encroached portion of land. ( Due to this there was a delay in completing the construction of this temple.) Then the residents with the help of a Politician the temple was re-constructed and Ashta Bandhana Maha kumbabishekam was conducted recently on 29-08-2012 in a grand manner as per agamam and the Mandala pooja is in the process.

During construction stage it was observed that Vinayagar, Hanuman and Amman faces are appeared in the trunk of the bodhi tree ( Arasa maram ). The photos taken during construction of the temple and the kumbhabhishekam are up loaded in this post.

Sri Veeranarayana Perumal Temple at Kattumannarkoil, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.

04, September 2012
02-09-2012. SUNDAY.

I was fortunate enough to have the darshan of Sri Veeranarayana Perumal of KattumannarKoil, when I went for the darshan of Paadal petra Shiva Sthalangal, near Kattumannarkoil.

It is the avathara sthalam  of Nathamuni and his grandson Alavandar. As per the Sri Veeranarayana Perumal's instruction Nathamuni collected back to this world all the verses of nalayira divya prabandham written by alwars, which were lost. The temple is facing east, with a tank in front. It is said that Veeranam lake is named after this Perumal.
