Santhanathaswamy Temple, Pudukkottai / Sri Santhanatha Swamy Temple, Pudukkottai, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to Sri Santhanathaswamy temple, at Pudukkottai Town was not planned in the Pudukkottai Heritage Walk, scheduled on 7th and 8th January 2023, organized jointly by Aatrupadai, TTDC, and Ula. Since the temple was close to our Lodge, where we stayed, we had been to this temple.

Some of the salient features of this temple are...
The temple faces east with an entrance arch with a stucco image of Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar.  The temple tank Pallavan Kulam is on the north side of the temple. A 3-tier Rajagopuram is after the entrance arch. Balipeedam, Rishabam and Dwajastham are in the mandapam after the Rajagopuram. Shiva Linga in the sanctum sanctorum is on Lotus pedestal. In Koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durga.

Durga

Vinayagar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi,  are before the Rajagopuram. In praharam 63var, Somaskandar, Sahasra lingam, Maha Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Bairavar and Sarabeswarar.  


ஸ்ரீ சாந்தநாதசுவாமி கோயில் 11 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் குலோத்துங்க சோழர் ஆட்சியின் போது கட்டப்பட்டதாக தமிழ்நாடு அறநிலையத்துறை சார்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்ட குறிப்பேடு தெரிவிக்கின்றது. இக்கோவில் ஊரின் மத்தியில் பல்லவன் குளக்கரையில் கிழக்கு நோக்கி கருவறை, இடைநாழி, அர்த்தமண்டபம் மற்றும் முக மண்டபத்துடன் தென்னிந்திய கட்டிடக்கலையின் திராவிட விமான அமைப்பில் பாதபந்த அதிட்டானத்தின் மீது கட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இருதள திராவிட விமானம் கருவறை மீது காணப்படுகின்றது. இறைவன் "சார்ந்தாரைக் காத்த நாயனார்" என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டு மறுவி தற்போது சாந்தநாதசுவாமி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றார். இக்கோயிலின் சிறப்பாக சரபேஸ்வரர் முகமண்டபத்தில் அருள்புரிகின்றார். 
 


ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Maha mandapam. The Sanctum Sanctorum is on a simple pada bandha adhistanam with jagathi, three patta kumuda, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai and Brahma kantha pilasters. The pilasters are with kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, and palakai. Poomottu pothyal is on the pilasters that support utharam. The Deva koshtas are protruding outside as padra koshtas. The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus, and prativari ( Yazhi ). The Nasikudus is with the images of Devotees, vimana models, Kodi karukku etc.  The Vimana is of 2 tiers  constructed in Dravida style.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
As per the inscription  ( HR & CE's Guide ), the temple was constructed during 11th Century, Kulothunga Chozha period. The temple was called Kulothunga Chozheeswaram.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, the temple was called Sarntharai Katha Nayanar – சார்ந்தாரைக் காத்த நாயனார்- which has got corrupted to the present name of Santhanathaswamy and Ambal as Santharamman.

The Devotees pray to Shiva and Ambal to get relieved from past karmas, and Pithru doshas, to excel in studies, get the benefit of praying Shiva at Kasi, etc.

POOJAS AND CELEBRARTIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosam, maha Shivaratri, Chathurthi, Thursdays, Rahu kala poojas on Fridays etc.

The temple will be kept open between 06.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 16.30 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is about 300 meters off from Manamadurai to Thanjavur Road, 1.4 KM from the Bus stand, 3.2 KM from the railway station, 53.4 KM from the Trichy Bus Stand, 54.6 KM from Thanjavur Bus Stand, 382 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station is Pudukkottai.
