Seevaramudayar Rock Cut Cave Temple, Malayakkoyil / Malayakovil / Malaikoilpatti, Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Seevaramudayar Rock Cut Cave temple at Malayakovil in Pudukkottai District was a part of Pudukkottai Heritage walk, on 7^th and 8^th January 2023, organised jointly by Aatrupadai, TTDC and Ula. Thanks to M/s Trichy Parthy, Prabhaharan and Francis Edison.

 

This Malayakovil Rock Cut Cave temple complex consists of two caves, back to back. Okkaleesuvaram Cave Temple is facing west and this Seevaramudayar Cave Temple is facing east. In addition to these two caves, two small Shiva Lingas are excavated on the rock / boulder, in the form of koshtas, of one is under worship, which is facing south ( The details are given in the previous post ). This rock Cave Shrine is on the east side of the Malayakoil and north side of the Temple Tank. This cave temple is only with sanctum sanctorum and a Rishabam is in front.

சீவரமுடையார்.... திருவோக்காலீசுவரர் குடைவரையின் கிழக்கு பகுதியில் கருவறை மட்டும் கொண்ட ஒரு சிறிய குடைவரை உள்ளது கல்வெட்டு இக்குடைவரை இறைவனை “சீவரமுடையார்" என்கிறது.

3.25 மீ பக்கமுடைய சதுரமாக அமைந்துள்ளது இக்கருவறை. உயரம் 1.99 மீ. கருவறையின் சுவர்களும் கூரையும் வெறுமையாக உள்ளன. தரையின் நடுவில் 475 மீ சுற்றளவும் 64 செ. மீ. உயரமும் கொண்ட எண்முக ஆவுடையார் பாறையி லேயே வெட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதன் மேலுள்ள உருளைப் பாணத்தின் உயரம் 63 செ. மீ இக்கருவறையில் உள்ள லிங்கம் பாறையில் குடையப்பட்ட தாய்ப்பாறை லிங்கம். இக்கருவறையின் ஆவுடையார் எண்கோண வடிவில் உள்ளார். இவ்வகை லிங்கம் தமிழகத்தில் மிகவும் அரிதாகவே உள்ளது. கோமுகத்தை தாவும் யாழி தாங்குவதைப் போல கிழக்கு பகுதியில் மட்டும் செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இவ்வகை லிங்கங்கள் புதுக்கோட்டை குன்றாண்டார் கோவிலிலும் மற்றொன்று மேலச்சேரி சிகாரி பல்லவேஸ்வரம் கோவிலிலும் உள்ளது.

ARCHITECTURE

The front sanctum wall is on pada bandha adhistanam with jagathi, 8 patti kumudam, pattigai. 4 pilaster are shown with virikona tharanga pothyals. The sanctum entrance measures 89 cm wide and 1.82 meter high. The inscriptions Parivadhini is on the south side wall and north side wall has the Pandya’s inscriptions.

The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape measures 3.25 meters and 1.99 meter high. The Shiva lingam is excavated out of mother rock measures 4.75 meter circumference and 64 Cm high. Avudayar is of octagonal in shape and banam is about 63 cm high. The komukha is supported with a yazhi. This yazhi is shown on east side only and not on the west side. A Shiva Linga was excavated little away from the cave on north side.

 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

A 29 line Tamil inscription is on the north side wall of this Temple. This Sadayavarman Kulasekara Pandya’s 3^rd reign year inscription starts with his meikeerthi as “poovin Kizathi- பூவின் கிழத்தி”. This inscription records that an order was issued for the Kadamai, Antharayam and Taxes  exemption to the  Kalvayil Nadalwar Temple thevadhana Land. This Rock cut cave temple moolavar Shiva was called as Virutharajabayangara vaLanattu kananattu Seevaramudaya Nayanar.

பரிவாதினி கல்வெட்டு

குடுமியான்மலை கருவறையின் வலப்பக்கம் மற்றும் திருமெய்யம் குடவரைக் கோவில், மலையக்கோவில் சுவற்றிலும் இக்கல்வெட்டு காணப்படுகிறது. 

On the south side wall of this East Facing Rock Cut Cave temple entrance, has the “Parivathini” ( A type of string musical instrument like Veena ) inscription with borders on all 4 sides ( 38 Cm x 24 CM ). Below that an inscription is with two parts, of which upper part two lines are in Pallava Grantham and lower part is in Tamil & Grantham. Based on the style of inscription, this belongs to 7^th Century. Since these inscriptions matches with Pallava King Mahendra Varman’s period inscriptions, it is presumed that this was inscribed during Mahendra Pallava period, and treated as Pandya’s or Mutharayar’s contributions.  Even though the name Parivathini was mentioned in 4^th Century Bharat Muni’s Dance book, but this is the oldest inscription available in Pudukkottai District, compared to all over India.  These two parts of inscriptions are incomplete as per Mu Nalini & Ira Kalaikovan. Hence real meaning could not be obtained.

எழுத்தமைதி 7 ம் நூற்றாண்டு. இக்கல்வெட்டில் உள்ள சில எழுத்துக்கள்.. மகேந்திரவர்மனின் மற்ற குடவரையில் காணப்படும் எழுத்துக்களுடன் ஒத்துப்போவதால், இந்த பரிவாதினி கல்வெட்டு மகேந்திரவர்ம பல்லவனின் காலத்தினை சேர்ந்த பாண்டிய அல்லது முத்தரைய மன்னர்களின் பங்களிப்பாக கருதப்படுகிறது. பரிவாதினி என்றால் ஒரு வீணை என்றும், இது ஒரு இசை சம்பந்தமுடைய செய்தி என்பதும் பெரும்பாலான அறிஞர்கள் முடிவு.. கி.பி 4ம் நூற்றாண்டாய் கருதப்படும் பரதமுனிவரின் நாட்டியநூலில் கூட "பரிவாதினி" குறித்த குறிப்புகள் உள்ளது. ஆனால் கல்வெட்டு ரீதியாய் தொன்மையானது இந்திய அளவில் புதுக்கோட்டையில் உள்ள  இந்த கல்வெட்டுகள் மட்டுமே.

The Rock Cut Cave Temple at Malayakovil is about 2.8 KM from Nachandupatti, 18.5 KM from Pudukkottai, 66 KM from Trichy, 76 KM from Thanjavur and 394 KM from Chennai.

Nearest railway station is Namanasamudram ( 9 KM ).
