Vedal a Natural cave / Shelter once used as a learning Centre for the Jain women, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.
03rd June, 2018.
It was a blessed day for all of us, since Swati Sri Lakshmisena
Bhattarak Battacharya Swamikal, of Jeenakanchi mutt, Melsithamur also participated
and graced the 54th Ahimsa walk
conducted by the Tamil Jains.
As usual, early morning around 05.30 hrs on 03rd June 2018, started
our journey from Chennai, Adambakkam
Jinalaya to Vedal near in Thiruvannamalai Dist, the starting point of this 54th
Ahimsa Walk. Since most of the organiser’s
native village was around Vedal, we were
very well taken care off and the hospitality was unique and excellent. During this
walk, we had visited the jinalaya at, Korakottai and Kallapuliyur, the pathams
( foot prints ).
VEDAL
The natural cave is about 7-8 feet high, 20 feet wide and 40 feet in length with mandapam in front. There are
4 inscriptions belongs to 8th century Pallava King Nandhivarman-I and 9th
century Aditya Chozha –I. As per Aditya Chozha-I, inscription this place
Vedal was called as “Mahadevi Aaranthi mangalam” Out of four, three are on the rock and one on
the mandapam pillar. The Mandapam pillar with inscriptions indicates that, that
there must be a temple existed, in dilapidated condition and dismantled pillars
and stones might have been used for the construction of this Mandapam at a latter stage. Hence the
Pillars, pothyal are not identical but in different shapes. Since the natural cave was used as a teaching centre no beds are found.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The inscription on the boulder just before the cave belongs to Rajakesarivarman's ( Adithya -I )14th reign year. As per the inscription this place Vedal was called as Vidal alias Madevi Aarandhimangalam of Singapura Nadu. The bas-relief of a man and man holding a Horse, Samaram, knife and Lamps with
inscriptions are found at the lower level rock, on top of the inscription.
The inscription records about 500 soldiers are stationed here after a conflict between female and male
student groups. The women students group was headed by a woman monk Kanaveera kurathi. Food
arrangements were taken care off by Kuna keerthi Bhattarar, her guru of the same Village. The reasons for the
conflict, number of women students studied and the lessons taught are not
known.
The Pallava King Nandivarman period inscription, is at the entrance of the cave on a boulder. The inscriptions records about the donations given for burning of the lamp for which 2 patti land was gifted to this Village. Also the inscription records the gift made to Thirunarungondai Jain Temple for its function.

HOW TO REACH:
Vedal can be reached from Tindivanam, Gingee, Vandavasi and Chetpet.
Of the above the shortest distance is 12 KM from Vandavasi via Ayilavadi near Kanchipuram.
